Despite his claim to be a pioneer, Milton was not initiating a new line of thought-English poets had been debating about rhyme and its connections to liberty, freedom, and constraint since Queen Elizabeth's reign. The Fetters of Rhyme traces this dynamic history of rhyme from the 1590s through the 1670s. Rebecca Rush uncovers the surprising associations early modern readers attached to rhyming forms like couplets and sonnets, and she shows how reading poetic form from a historical perspective yields fresh insights into verse's complexities.Rush explores how early modern poets imagined rhyme as a band or fetter, comparing it to the bonds linking individuals to political, social, and religious communities. She considers how Edmund Spenser's sonnet rhymes stood as emblems of voluntary confinement, how John Donne's revival of the Chaucerian couplet signaled sexual and political radicalism, and how Ben Jonson's verse charted a middle way between licentious Elizabethan couplet poets and slavish sonneteers. Rush then looks at why the royalist poets embraced the prerational charms of rhyme, and how Milton spent his career reckoning with rhyme's allures.Examining a poetic feature that sits between sound and sense, liberty and measure, The Fetters of Rhyme elucidates early modern efforts to negotiate these forces in verse making and reading

    What’s new about the apocalypse? Revelation does not allow us to look back after the end and enumerate pivotal turning points. It happens in an immediate encounter with the transformatively new.John Milton’s and Andrew Marvell’s lyrics attempt to render the experience of such an apocalyptic change in the present. In this respect they take seriously the Reformation’s insistence that eschatology is a historical phenomenon. Yet these poets are also reacting to the Regicide, and, as a result, their works explore very modern questions about the nature of events, what it means for a significant historical occasion to happen.Lyric Apocalypse argues that Milton’s and Marvell’s lyrics challenge any retrospective understanding of events, including one built on a theory of revolution. Instead, these poems show that there is no "after" to the apocalypse, that if we are going to talk about change, we should do so in the present, when there is still time to do something about it. For both of these poets, lyric becomes a way to imagine an apocalyptic event that would be both hopeful and new

    Myung Mi Kim's Commons weighs on the most sensitive of scales the minute grains of daily life in both peace and war, registering as very few works of literature have done our common burden of being subject to history. Abstracting colonization, war, immigration, disease, and first-language loss until only sparse phrases remain, Kim takes on the anguish and displacement of those whose lives are embedded in history.Kim's blank spaces are loaded silences: openings through which readers enter the text and find their way. These silences reveal gaps in memory and articulate experiences that will not translate into language at all. Her words retrieve the past in much the same way the human mind does: an image sparks another image, a scent, the sound of bombs, or conversation. These silences and pauses give the poems their structure.Commons's fragmented lyric pushes the reader to question the construction of the poem. Identity surfaces, sinks back, then rises again. On this shifting ground, Kim creates meaning through juxtaposed fragments. Her verse, with its stops and starts, its austere yet rich images, offers splinters of testimony and objection. It negotiates a constantly changing world, scavenging through scraps of experience, spaces around words, and remnants of emotion for a language that enfolds the enormity of what we cannot express

Die »Schuld des Mordes an der Erde Lieblichkeit«: Dieses Thema durchzieht das Werk der Annette von Droste-Hülshoff von Anfang bis Ende. Dabei verbinden sich religiöse und anthropologische Fragen mit sehr handfest ökologischen. Diese Dichtung begreift »Natur« als einen umfassenden und dynamischen Lebenszusammenhang, dessen Zerstörung auch eine Selbstzerstörung des Menschen bedeutet. Die faszinierende Studie deckt Annette von Droste-Hülshoffs ökologisches Schreiben auf - die oft gerühmte sinnliche Intensität ihrer Naturbilder, ihren Sinn für spirituelle Dimensionen des Lebendigen, ihre sensible Wahrnehmung von Gefährdungen, deren Ausmaß erst heute sichtbar wird. Dabei wird die radikale Modernität einer Dichterin sichtbar, die in ihren großen Naturgedichten und in Erzählungen wie der »Judenbuche« provozierend neue literarische Verfahren erprobt.

    Von Fragmenten, Ruinen und Torsi geht eine besondere Faszination aus, weil sie uns an die Zerbrechlichkeit des menschlichen Lebens erinnern. Warum lesen wir literarische Fragmente? Was fasziniert uns an den Gedichten Sapphos, einer griechischen Lyrikerin, die um 600 v. Chr. lebte und deren Texte nur in Bruchstücken auf Papyri oder Tonscherben überliefert sind? Welche zwiespältigen Gefühle löst die Betrachtung von Ruinen und zerbrochenen Statuen in uns aus? Das Buch erläutert, dass unvollständige Kunstwerke auf ihre Rezipientinnen und Rezipienten einen anderen, oft intensiveren Reiz ausüben als vollständige Werke. Die Anziehungskraft des Fragmentarischen besteht darin, dass jedes Fragment uns die Zerbrechlichkeit der von Menschen geschaffenen Dinge vor Augen führt. Zerbrechlichkeit ist daher auch ein wichtiges Thema der Literatur. Die Lektüren dieses Buches sind Texten etwa von Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Rainer Maria Rilke, Walter Benjamin, Ruth Klüger und Susan Sontag gewidmet, in denen es um zerstörte Tempel und Brücken, brennende Bibliotheken und Kathedralen sowie die Vernichtung ganzer Lebensräume durch Kriege und Naturkatastrophen geht. Gefragt wird auch danach, welche Rolle die körperliche Fragilität der Künstler für unser Bild von Autorinnen und Autoren wie Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Kling oder Friederike Mayröcker spielt.

Despite his claim to be a pioneer, Milton was not initiating a new line of thought-English poets had been debating about rhyme and its connections to liberty, freedom, and constraint since Queen Elizabeth's reign. The Fetters of Rhyme traces this dynamic history of rhyme from the 1590s through the 1670s. Rebecca Rush uncovers the surprising associations early modern readers attached to rhyming forms like couplets and sonnets, and she shows how reading poetic form from a historical perspective yields fresh insights into verse's complexities.Rush explores how early modern poets imagined rhyme as a band or fetter, comparing it to the bonds linking individuals to political, social, and religious communities. She considers how Edmund Spenser's sonnet rhymes stood as emblems of voluntary confinement, how John Donne's revival of the Chaucerian couplet signaled sexual and political radicalism, and how Ben Jonson's verse charted a middle way between licentious Elizabethan couplet poets and slavish sonneteers. Rush then looks at why the royalist poets embraced the prerational charms of rhyme, and how Milton spent his career reckoning with rhyme's allures.Examining a poetic feature that sits between sound and sense, liberty and measure, The Fetters of Rhyme elucidates early modern efforts to negotiate these forces in verse making and reading

    Bis in die Gegenwart hinein wird Lyrik in der Gattungspoetik immer wieder als Klangkunst charakterisiert. Zugleich liegt ein Großteil der historisch überlieferten Lyrikproduktion nur in Schriftform vor. In dieser Studie werden Vorschläge erarbeitet, wie die akustische bzw. auditive Dimension schriftlich überlieferter lyrischer Gebilde rekonstruiert werden kann. Sie lässt sich damit den Forschungsfeldern der Lyrikologie wie auch der historischen Klangwissenschaft zuordnen. Das vorgestellte Verfahren wird im Anschluss in drei literarhistorischen Modellstudien zu Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock und Ludwig Tieck erprobt. Die Kapitel des historischen Teils können als Beiträge zu einer Sprachklanggeschichte der deutschsprachigen Lyrik gelesen werden, die bisher nicht vorliegt. In poetics up to the present day, poetry has repeatedly been characterized as a form of sound art. Yet a large part of the surviving lyrical production handed down from tradition is only available in written form. In this study, suggestions are made as to how the acoustic or auditory dimension of these lyrical formations can be reconstructed. It thus contributes to the research fields of both lyricology and historical sound science. The method presented here is subsequently tested in three literary-historical model studies on Johann Klaj, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Ludwig Tieck. The chapters of the historical part can be read as contributions to a linguistic sound history of German-language poetry which has yet to be written.

    Der in Deutschland kaum bekannte Florentiner Dichter Aldo Palazzeschi (1885–1974) war zusammen mit Filippo Tommaso Marinetti einer der Hauptvertreter des italienischen Futurismus. Er stand für eine nicht-bellizistische Spielart des Futurismus, die sich vor allem auf Nietzsches Theorie des Komischen als Medium der Subversion etablierter Werte berief, und nahm für sich die poetische Rolle des Akrobaten und Zirkusartisten („Saltimbanco“) in Anspruch. Die vorliegende Edition präsentiert erstmalig die bisher unveröffentlichten Palazzeschi-Übertragungen des expressionistischen Dichters Theodor Däubler aus dessen Nachlass in einer synoptischen Ausgabe zusammen mit den italienischen Originaldichtungen. Eine ausführliche Einleitung kontextualisiert Palazzeschis Poetik und wertet Däublers Nachdichtungen aus. The Florentine poet Aldo Palazzeschi (1885–1974), still little known in Germany, was, together with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, one of the main exponents of Italian Futurism. He stood for a non-bellicistic variety of Futurism, which mainly referred to Nietzsche’s theory of humor as a medium for the subversion of established values, and took on the poetic role of acrobat and circus performer („Saltimbanco“). This edition presents for the first time the previously unpublished Palazzeschi-translations by the expressionist poet Theodor Däubler from his estate in a synoptic edition together with the original Italian poems. A detailed introduction contextualizes Palazzeschi’s poetics and analyzes Däubler’s translations.

Alone Together reveals the political, ethical, and poetic dimensions of this phenomenon, which was among the most important of the substantial changes in intellectual and literary culture taking place in the crowns of Portugal, Castile, and Aragon. With careful analyses of lyric poetry, sentimental prose, and wide-ranging treatises in multiple languages, this study foregrounds the dense web of relations among these genres and linguistic and cultural traditions. Drawing on Stoic and early monastic thought, authors such as the Marqués de Santillana, Ausiàs March, and Alfonso de Madrigal explored the unifying potential of shared emotion in an ethical rehabilitation that cut across the personal and political, exalting friendly conversation, civic communication, and collective poetic composition. In his readings of these authors, Henry Berlin references recent work on lyric theory and the history and theory of emotion, from classical antiquity to the modern day. An exploration of the political and poetic potential of shared emotion, Alone Together shows how a heuristic focus on the notion of passion is illuminating for broader ongoing discussions about the nature of emotion, the lyric, and subjectivity

    What’s new about the apocalypse? Revelation does not allow us to look back after the end and enumerate pivotal turning points. It happens in an immediate encounter with the transformatively new.John Milton’s and Andrew Marvell’s lyrics attempt to render the experience of such an apocalyptic change in the present. In this respect they take seriously the Reformation’s insistence that eschatology is a historical phenomenon. Yet these poets are also reacting to the Regicide, and, as a result, their works explore very modern questions about the nature of events, what it means for a significant historical occasion to happen.Lyric Apocalypse argues that Milton’s and Marvell’s lyrics challenge any retrospective understanding of events, including one built on a theory of revolution. Instead, these poems show that there is no "after" to the apocalypse, that if we are going to talk about change, we should do so in the present, when there is still time to do something about it. For both of these poets, lyric becomes a way to imagine an apocalyptic event that would be both hopeful and new

    Roman Jakobson's 'Poetry of Grammar and Grammar of Poetry' (1981), that monumental work of his later years, together with its later additions, was and is a theoretical challenge both for General and Comparative Literature and for the study of individual literatures. However, the sovereign multilinguality of these linguistic analyses of poetry has not only resulted in their being received world-wide, but has also presented a seemingly insurmountable difficulty, as there is hardly a reader who is able to understand them all, let alone discuss them critically. To remedy this situation - no more and no less - is the objective of this German edition of all of Jakobson's structuralist analyses of poems and his most important poetological essays, which have been translated and commentated by specialists from the appropriate areas of literary studies Roman Jakobsons monumentales Alterswerk Poetry of Grammar and Grammar of Poetry (1981) samt seinen späteren Ergänzungen war und ist eine theoretische Herausforderung für die Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft wie für die verschiedensten Einzelphilologien. Aus der souveränen Vielsprachigkeit dieser linguistischen Gedichtanalysen resultierte aber nicht nur ihre weltweite Rezeption, sondern zugleich auch deren völlige Disparatheit: Gab es doch kaum einen Leser, der sie alle auch nur zu lesen, geschweige denn kritisch zu diskutieren vermochte. Diesen Missstand zu beheben strebt die deutsche Ausgabe von Jakobsons sämtlichen strukturalen Gedichtanalysen und seiner wichtigsten poetologischen Aufsätze an, die durch Spezialisten aus den jeweiligen Literaturwissenschaften übersetzt und kommentiert werden

Bis heute hat die Faszination ihrer zertrümmerten homoerotischen Verse über Sehnsucht, Schönheit und Abschied nicht nachgelassen – im Gegenteil: Sappho ist in der deutschsprachigen Lyrik des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts präsenter als je zuvor. In exemplarischen Einzelanalysen wird das fruchtbare Zusammenspiel von archaischer und moderner Lyrik sichtbar gemacht und das Phänomen der zeitlosen Modernität von Sapphos Dichtung aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive erklärt. Sappho from Lesbos, born in the seventh century BC, was the first canonical female voice in Europe. From antiquity on she was appreciated in art/ artistically received, even if – or perhaps precisely because – her biography lies in the dark and most of her poetry is lost. To this day, the fascination that emanates from the enigmatic poetess and her shattered homoerotic verses about longing, beauty and farewell has not diminished – on the contrary: This book/volume demonstrates that in the German-language poetry of the 20th and 21st centuries Sappho is more present than ever before. Single exemplary analyses that stick close to the text show the fruitful interplay between archaic and modern poetry. At the same time, the timeless modernity of Sappho’s poetry is explained from a literary perspective.

    Abstract: From the point of view of a philosophy of literature the position of lyric poetry is specific. While epistemic approaches focus on fiction and its forms of cognition, lyric poetry is often reduced to conveying emotions or atmosphere. While arguing for the epistemic content of lyric poetry, the paper will focus on the concept of representation (‚Vergegenwärtigung‘). Emphasis will be placed on the non-propositional component of cognition as well as on a specific understanding of experience in the form of knowing, ‘what-it-islike’. While didactic poetry displays a propositional character, nonsense-poetry with its emphasis on analogy as well as the poetry of experience (‚Erlebnisdichtung‘) fall on the non-propositional side. The form of cognition that is central, here, resembles that of Bertrand Russell’s ‘knowledge by acquaintance’, albeit as one of indirect acquaintance.     Abstract: This text examines various positions and opinions on the question of the relationship between lyric and knowledge. In this respect, we can, on the one hand, determine traditional positions which contend that poetry may be understood as a tool of thought or at least offer access to knowledge. On the other hand, there are positions that strongly advocate the view that knowledge depends on methodically secured insight (cognition) that cannot be realized in poetry. This article adopts Gabriel’s (2013) mediating position, which assumes that there are other forms of non-propositional knowledge besides propositional knowledge, such as ‘knowingwhat-it-is-like’ and others. Following the definition of lyric by Zymner (2009), the focus is then set on the issue of how lyric may convey nonpropositional knowledge. An analysis of a poem by Herta Müller will provide an example for an imparting of lyrical knowledge by showing (‚Aufweisen‘). izfk.uni-trier.de/index.php/izfk/article/view/23
