    In today's globalized world, people are increasingly mobile and often need to communicate across different languages. Learning a new language is an investment in human capital. Migrants must learn the language of their destination country, but even non-migrants must often learn other languages if their work involves communicating with foreigners. Economic studies have shown that fluency in a dominant language is important to economic success and increases economic efficiency. However, maintaining linguistic diversity also has value since language is also an expression of people's culture.

    Abstract: New forms of mobility presuppose a technological factor that frames it as 'topological proximity', regardless of the nature of the mobile agent (human being, robot ware, animal, virus, digital object). The appeal of the so-called linguas francas is especially evident in human beings showing high propensity to move, i.e., motility. They are usually associated with transnational communication in multilingual settings, linguistic justice, and globalization. Paradoxically, such global languages foster mobility, but, at the same time, they may hinder social inclusion in the hosting society, especially for people in mobility. The article compares English as a lingua franca and Esperanto in the European context, putting together the linguistic hierarchy of transnational communication (Gobbo, 2015) and the notion of linguistic unease, used to assess sociolinguistic justice (Iannàccaro, Gobbo, & Dell'Aquila, 2018). The analysis shows that the sense of belonging of their respective speakers

    Wohngemeinschaften (WGs) des Studierendenwerks sind – gerade in beliebten Universitätsstädten – Orte, an denen Studierende mit unterschiedlichen sprachlichen Repertoires aufeinandertreffen. Eine solche mehrsprachige Konstellation macht eine Aushandlung im Hinblick darauf erforderlich, welche Sprache(n) zur Gestaltung des Zusammenlebens verwendet werden soll(en). Über diese Aushandlungsprozesse, die wir mit dem Konzept der Language Policy erfassen, ist allerdings bislang wenig bekannt. Im Fokus des vorliegenden Beitrags steht deshalb die Frage, wie die internationalen Studierenden die Language Policies in ihren WGs wahrnehmen und welche Perspektiven sie dabei auf ihre eigene Mehrsprachigkeit einnehmen. Die Datengrundlage bilden zwei Gruppeninterviews, die mithilfe der Positionierungsanalyse ausgewertet werden. In der Analyse zeigen wir, dass das Englische als Lingua franca eine zentrale Rolle einnimmt und wesentlich zur Konstitution der Gruppenidentität beiträgt. Flat-sharing communities – especially in popular university cities – are spaces where students with various linguistic repertoires frequently encounter each other. Such a multilingual constellation requires a joint negotiation in regards to which language(s) will shape the social interactions among residents. To date, little is known about these negotiation processes, which we describe using the concept of language policy. This article focuses on how international students perceive the language policies in their flat-sharing community and which perspectives they take on their own multilingualism. The data is based on two group interviews and evaluated by means of the positioning theory. The analysis shows that English as a lingua franca occupies a central role and significantly contributes to the constitution of a group identity.
