    Today we are witnessing an increased use of data visualization in society. Across domains such as work, education and the news, various forms of graphs, charts and maps are used to explain, convince and tell stories. In an era in which more and more data are produced and circulated digitally, and digital tools make visualization production increasingly accessible, it is important to study the conditions under which such visual texts are generated, disseminated and thought to be of societal benefit. This book is a contribution to the multi-disciplined and multi-faceted conversation concerning the forms, uses and roles of data visualization in society. Do data visualizations do 'good' or 'bad'? Do they promote understanding and engagement, or do they do ideological work, privileging certain views of the world over others? The contributions in the book engage with these core questions from a range of disciplinary perspectives.

    "From the mid-sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century Russia was transformed from a moderate-sized, land-locked principality into the largest empire on earth. How did systems of information and communication shape and reflect this extraordinary change? Information and Mechanisms of Communication in Russia, 1600-1850 brings together a range of contributions to shed some light on this complex question. Communication networks such as the postal service and the gathering and circulation of news are examined alongside the growth of a bureaucratic apparatus that informed the government about its country and its people. The inscription of space is considered from the point of view of mapping and the changing public ‘graphosphere’ of signs and monuments. More than a series of institutional histories, this book is concerned with the way Russia discovered itself, envisioned itself and represented itself to its people.

    Innovative and scholarly, this collection breaks new ground in its approach to communication and information as a field of study in Russia.     Die erste bildwissenschaftliche Untersuchung der Eigenlogik von Buchgraphik am Falle der Kupfer Chodowieckis zu Goethes Werther.Goethes Erfolgsroman »Die Leiden des jungen Werthers« war wiederholt Gegenstand der Arbeit des Berliner Kupferstechers Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki. Im Auftrag verschiedener Verleger schuf er eine Bühne für zentrale Ereignisse des Romans und gab Werther und Lotte ein Gesicht. Als Buchbeigaben flankierten seine Darstellungen den vor allem als Raubdruck verbreiteten Text und avancierten zu seinen bekanntesten Kupfern.Die Autorin befragt das Verhältnis der scheinbar rein dekorativen Buchillustration zum literarischen Text neu und zeigt durch eine Verortung der Kupfer vor dem Hintergrund verschiedener Darstellungs- und Ausdruckstheorien der Aufklärung, wie die Bilder ihre eigene Medialität reflektieren und die Forderungen nach der Transparenz ihrer Darstellung unterlaufen. Damit öffnet die Studie einen neuen Zugang zur Buchgraphik, da sie auf die Eigenlogik dieser Bilder abhebt: Sie aktivieren unkontrolliert die Imaginationskraft, wodurch sich die Betrachtenden ein eigenes Bild des Erzählten machen können.

    Recent experimental evidence suggests that donors are averse to giving to charities with high overhead ratios. This paper asks whether donors are also averse to giving to charities spending a high share of the donations on unavoidable administrative expenses. The results of an experiment with a nationally representative sample (n = 1, 032) suggest that donors dislike paying for administrative burden almost as much as for overhead. While donors care primarily about how much of their donations are used for program-related services, donors seem to have a weak preference for charities to spend their donations on administrative burden rather than on overheads. Government subsidies that help alleviate charities' administrative burden can reduce donors' aversion to give to charities with high administrative expenses. Overall, we show that regulations that aim to increase transparency and accountability in the charity sector can have the unintended side effect of reducing charitable giving.

    Die Studie problematisiert die osmanisch-griechische Identität anhand des entsprechenden Diskurses im Vereinsjournal des Griechischen Philologischen Vereins in Konstantinopel. Als Hauptstadt verkörperte Konstantinopel die Transformationen, denen der osmanische Staat und die osmanische Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert unterlagen. Die im Vereinsjournal gespiegelten Aktivitäten der Gesellschaft sind als Antwort auf diese Transformationen zu sehen und somit Ausdruck des zugrunde liegenden Selbstbildes. Daher gilt das Interesse gleichermaßen der Aufzeichnung der relevanten Informationen wie den damit zusammenhängenden Interpretationen. Über den griechisch-orthodoxen Kontext des Vereins hinaus erörtert die Arbeit in diesem Zusammenhang das Konzept der Moderne sowohl im internationalen Rahmen als auch innerhalb des osmanischen Reichs. This study contributes to the understanding of Ottoman-Greek identity by exploring the discourse that the Greek Philological Society in Constantinople has published on this topic in its journal. As capital of the Ottoman Empire, the city of Constantinople epitomized the transformations both Ottoman state and society experienced in the 19th century. The specific spatial and temporal position of the Society’s activities, as reflected in its journal, can be regarded as an answer to those very transformations and thus as an expression of the underlying sense of identity. Equal emphasis is placed on the recording of the relevant information and on its coherent interpretation. In order to avoid applying too narrow a view by placing the Society exclusively in an orthodox or Greek context, the concept of modernity as a shared experience on an international scale and within the Ottoman Empire is established as the principal frame of reference.

    We study the origins of support for gender-related affirmative action (AA) in two pre-registered online experiments (N = 1, 700). We implement three treatments to disentangle the preference for AA stemming from i) perceived gender differences in productivity, ii) beliefs about AA effects on productivity, or iii) other non-material motives. To test i), we provide information to employers that there is no gender gap in productivity. To test ii), we inform the candidates about the hiring rule ex-ante, allowing us to observe how AA is expected to affect productivity. To test iii), we remove the payment to the employers based on the chosen candidates' productivity, thus making AA cheaper. We do not find significant differences in AA support across treatments, despite successfully altering beliefs about expected productivity differences. Our results suggest that AA choice reflects a more intrinsic and inelastic preference for advancing female candidates

    Poorly maintained public infrastructure is common in low- and middle-income countries, with consequences for service delivery and public health. By experimentally identifying the impact of incentives for local maintenance for both providers and potential users, this paper provides one of the first economic analyses of provider–user dynamics in the presence of local coordination failure. Focusing on shared sanitation facilities for slum residents in two major Indian cities, we randomly allocate facilities to either a control or two treatments. The first treatment incentivizes maintenance of the facility among providers, while the second treatment adds a sensitization campaign about the returns of a well-maintained facility among potential users. Using surveys, behavioral and objective measurements for both providers and potential users, we show that incentivizing maintenance does not favor collective action. The treatments raise the quality of facilities and reduce free riding, but at the cost of user selection. Providers improve routine maintenance, but also respond strategically to the newly-introduced incentives. While slum residents’ private willingness to pay and cooperation are unaffected, their demand for public intervention increases. The second treatment raises aware-ness, but does not affect behavior.

First, exploiting an RD design, we show that receipt of information increased household rice receipts by 30 percentage points. Second, we show that approximately half of the effect is driven by household head literacy. Leveraging novel data on the locations and timings of school openings in the 1970s INPRES school building program, we document that household heads' literacy gained during childhood was pivotal for their households subsequently receiving their full entitlement of rice during adulthood.

  18. How do beliefs about the gender wage gap affect the demand for public policy?

    In this paper, we test whether promoting digital government tools increases the take-up of an important public health prevention service: cervical cancer screening. We implemented an at-scale field experiment in Uruguay, randomly encouraging women to make medical appointments with a digital application or reminding them to do it as usual at their local clinic. Using administrative records, we found that the digital application nearly doubled attendance of a screening appointment compared to reminders and tripled the rate compared to a pure control group (3.2 percentage point increase over a base of 1.9 percent). Survey data suggests that the impacts of the intervention were mostly mediated by reduced transaction costs. Our results highlight the potential of investing in digital government to improve the take-up of public services.

    Children with lower socioeconomic status (SES) tend to benefit more from early child care, but are substantially less likely to be enrolled. We study whether reducing behavioral barriers in the application process increases enrollment in child care for lower-SES children. In our RCT in Germany with highly subsidized child care (n > 600), treated families receive application information and personal assistance for applications. For lower-SES families, the treatment increases child care application rates by 21 pp and enrollment rates by 16 pp. Higher-SES families are not affected by the treatment. Thus, alleviating behavioral barriers closes half of the SES gap in early child care enrollment.

    Wilhelm Voßkamp analysiert eingehend die literarischen Strategien des »Erfinders« der modernen Autobiographie, Dichtung und Wahrheit miteinander zu verbinden. »Dichtung und Wahrheit« entsteht in einer historischen Umbruchssituation um 1800, in der sich sowohl die literarischen Kommunikationsverhältnisse als auch die Rolle der Bilder im kulturellen Haushalt der Gesellschaft grundsätzlich ändern. Hinzu kommt Goethes persönliche Krise nach dem Tod Schillers, dem Tod der Herzogin Anna Amalia und dem Tod seiner Mutter. »Dichtung und Wahrheit« verdeutlicht bereits im Titel die Doppelheit von künstlerisch-fiktiver und autobiografisch-authentischer Struktur. In einer Vielfalt intertextuell verknüpfter Erzählvarianten und Diskursformen werden einzelne Ordnungsmodelle erprobt und zur Diskussion gestellt. Es dominiert eine selbstreflexive Beobachter-Perspektive und die Frage nach dem erzählerischen Wie. Dafür bedarf es einer spezifischen narrativen Form. Goethe wählt die des Ich-Romans mit wiederholten Versuchen der »Flucht hinter ein Bild«. Die Beziehung von Text und Bild ist deshalb konstitutiv. In den poetologischen Lektüren geht es daher um literarische Verfahren, um Möglichkeiten einer Poetik der Autobiografie, die sowohl der Selbstaufklärung wie der Selbstverrätselung dienen.

Vor allem die Schriftsteller haben die Komplexität seiner Verfahrensweise kreativ aufgegriffen und fortgeführt. Die Impulse des 18. Jahrhunderts und der Romantik sind in der klassischen Moderne ausdifferenziert worden. Im Rückgriff u.a. auf Sören Kierkegaard und Rudolf Kassner zeigt sich bei Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Thomas Mann, bei Bertolt Brecht und Friedrich Dürrenmatt, besonders bei Franz Kafka und Ingeborg Bachmann, wie sehr Platon in der Sicht der Literatur als Autor der Moderne gelesen worden ist. Plato's dialogues are scenes of cunning narrative strategies and dramaturgical scenarios. His criticism of the poets goes hand in hand with an astonishing literary refinement, the relevance of which, admittedly, has frequently been subject to discussion. Writers, in particular, have creatively taken up and carried forward the complexities of its procedure. The impulses of the 18th century and Romanticism have been differentiated in classical modernism. Taking recourse to Sören Kierkegaard and Rudolf Kassner, among others, eminent authors such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, and especially Franz Kafka and Ingeborg Bachmann, provide ample evidence of the extent to which writers of literature have read Plato as an author of modernity.
