    Theater direction is today more unfettered, the sphere of artistic possibilities more open, than ever before. Creative chaos on all sides? Not really. Denis Hänzi investigates how old ideals and new realities in the German-language theatrical landscape are deriving from the interplay between individual working methods and institutional configurations. Extrapolating on Bourdieu's concept of habitus/field, he develops a theory of charisma which provides an innovative approach to the analysis of contemporary artistic worlds. That the »order of the theater« bears visible traits of a culture of success which appears to consolidate the male dominance in directing is just one of the illuminating findings that makes this book fascinating for theater-makers and theater-goers alike. Die Theaterregie ist heute so entfesselt, der künstlerische Möglichkeitsraum so offen wie nie. Kreatives Chaos allenthalben? Nicht wirklich. Denis Hänzi untersucht, wie aus dem Wechselspiel von individuellen Arbeitsweisen und institutionellen Arrangements, alten Idealen und neuen Realitäten das Gefüge der deutschsprachigen Theaterlandschaft hervorgeht. Mit einer charismatheoretischen Erweiterung des Bourdieu'schen Habitus/Feld-Konzepts wird ein innovativer Ansatz zur Analyse gegenwärtiger Kunstwelten formuliert.

    Dass die »Ordnung des Theaters« zusehends Züge einer Erfolgskultur trägt, welche die männliche Dominanz im Regieberuf zu verfestigen scheint, ist einer von vielen erhellenden Befunden, die das Buch auch für Theaterschaffende und -interessierte spannend machen.

    Die gegenwärtigen medientechnischen Entwicklungen haben zu einem immensen Aufschwung der Bilder beigetragen. Noch nie wurde so viel mit Bildern kommuniziert wie heute. Wie verständigen wir uns mit Bildern? Wie erzeugen wir in unserem Alltag Sinn mit ihnen? Die Logik des Bildes hat, im Vergleich zu jener der Sprache, in der Forschung bisher wenig methodologische Beachtung gefunden. Vor allem in der Auseinandersetzung mit Medien und Kommunikation fehlt eine prinzipielle Beschäftigung mit Bildverständigung bislang weitgehend. Im vorliegenden Buch wird theoretisch und empirisch die Funktion des Bildes in der wechselseitigen Konstitution von Medien und Alltag geklärt und in einem empirisch fundierten, praxeologischen Kommunikationsmodell verdichtet. Das Modell begründet und ermöglicht empirische Forschung, die gegenwärtige Kommunikation insofern zu erfassen weiß, als u. a. unterschiedliche Medialitäten (Sprache, Bild, Musik ...) in ihrem Eigensinn ebenso wie Social-Media-Kommunikation systematisch beachtet werden. Im Buch werden die entsprechenden forschungspraktischen Schritte, insbesondere der Bild- und Medienanalyse, detailliert ausgeführt

    Utilizing a theoretical framework of the racial and ethnic habitus constructed from Bourdieu's habitus, in addition to theories of racial identity and whiteness studies, this study examines the potential of short-term mission trips to raise the racial and ethnic consciousness of white participants, oftentimes a first step in improving race relations. Due to the limited empirical research on short-term missions, research on study abroad regarding racial and ethnic consciousness is utilized as a proxy. It is concluded that the racial and ethnic habitus is not easily malleable to social forces that are present in short-term mission trips, and even if it is, the effects may be temporary. Furthermore, it is more likely that differing racial and ethnic habituses may result in conflict between the various stakeholders involved in short-term missions. It is evident that more empirical research needs to be conducted on short-term missions in order to provide a better understanding of these religious initiatives.

    The essays in this collection aim to waken contemporary discussions of ethos (and of rhetoric generally) from their Western, classical-Aristotelian slumbers. Western rhetoric was never univocal in its theory or practice of ethos: the essays in this collection provide proof of this. The contributors aimed to shake rhetoricout of its Eurocentrism: the traditions of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia sustain their own models of ethos and lead us to reconsider rhetoric in its rich variety—what ethos was, is, and will become. This collection is groundbreaking in its attempt to outline the diversity of argument, trust, and authority beyond a singular, dominant perspective. This collection offers readers a choice of itineraries: thematic, geographic, and historical. Essays may be read individually or cumulatively, as exercises in comparative rhetoric. In taking a world perspective, Histories of Ethos will prove a seminal discussion. Its comparative approach will help readers appreciate the commonalities and the distinctions in competing cultural-discursive practices—in what brings us together and what drives us apart as communities. Additionally, it is the editors’ hope that, out of this historical, multicultural dialogue, some new perspectives on ethos may come forward to broaden our discussion and reach of understanding.

Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma.     The essays in this collection aim to waken contemporary discussions of ethos (and of rhetoric generally) from their Western, classical-Aristotelian slumbers. Western rhetoric was never univocal in its theory or practice of ethos: the essays in this collection provide proof of this. The contributors aimed to shake rhetoricout of its Eurocentrism: the traditions of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia sustain their own models of ethos and lead us to reconsider rhetoric in its rich variety—what ethos was, is, and will become. This collection is groundbreaking in its attempt to outline the diversity of argument, trust, and authority beyond a singular, dominant perspective. This collection offers readers a choice of itineraries: thematic, geographic, and historical. Essays may be read individually or cumulatively, as exercises in comparative rhetoric. In taking a world perspective, Histories of Ethos will prove a seminal discussion. Its comparative approach will help readers appreciate the commonalities and the distinctions in competing cultural-discursive practices—in what brings us together and what drives us apart as communities. Additionally, it is the editors’ hope that, out of this historical, multicultural dialogue, some new perspectives on ethos may come forward to broaden our discussion and reach of understanding.

    The Routledge Companion to Literature and Emotion shows how the "affective turn" in the humanities applies to literary studies. Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma.
