    This study is devoted to the authors who initiated the revival of the Russian avantgarde tradition, which had been brutally suppressed by the Soviet authorities in the mid- 1930s. The revival of this tradition took place in the literary underground, where writers who endeavored to fulfil this challenging task largely remained until the collapse of the Soviet regime. Most of them emerged from obscurity only at the beginning of the 1990s, which explains why their dramatic and fascinating history has been so little examined by scholars. Although the situation has changed significantly in the last decade, during which some insightful studies have appeared in both Russia and the West, the subject obviously requires more thorough and systematic exploration. This book aims to narrow important gaps in the scholarship on the Russian literary avantgarde during its least investigated period.

    ACTION — as in begin, genesis, motion — is a collection of poems ultimately concerned with form, those lines drawn in the sand that give way to the profanity of the holy, the holiness of the profane. Throughout ACTION, Opal engages the constraints inherent to seemingly fixed forms. From living with rheumatoid arthritis, to feeling for the edges of a sonnet tradition, to wrestling with the tenets of historical theology, this collection demonstrates that the only way to honestly submit to a form is to rage against it. However, to assume that this rage is not a kind of explosive joy—a Barthesian jouissance—would be to miss the point of poems that Dean Young has described as “radiant affirmations of life and art.”

Simon Reader pursues this argument in original readings of unpublished writing by prominent Victorians, offering a more expansive approach to literary formalism for the twenty-first century. Neither drafts nor diaries, the notes of Charles Darwin, Oscar Wilde, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Vernon Lee, and George Gissing record ephemeral and nonlinear experiences, revealing each author's desire to leave their fragments scattered and unused. Presenting notes in terms of genre allows Reader to suggest inventive new accounts of key Victorian texts, including The Picture of Dorian Gray, On the Origin of Species, and Hopkins's devotional lyrics, and to reinterpret these works as meditations on the ethics of compiling and using data. In this way, Notework recasts information collection as a personal and expressive activity that comes into focus against large-scale systems of knowledge organization. Finding resonance between today's digital culture and its nineteenth-century precursors, Reader honors our most disposable, improvised, and fleeting textual gestures

    Die Ästhetik und das Wissenschaftsprogramm Johann Friedrich Herbarts (1776–1841) sind heute weitgehend vergessen, obwohl sie ebenso wie die an Herbart anschließende Theorietradition im 19. Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung waren. Das herbartianische Wissenschaftsprogramm leitete nicht nur den Untergang des Idealismus ein, sondern legte auch wichtige Grundlagen für die Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft, den Strukturalismus, die Völkerpsychologie, die Psychoanalyse und den Wiener Kreis. Die Studie zeigt, dass die herbartianische Ästhetik für den funktionalistischen Formbegriff der Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaften ebenso fundamental gewesen ist wie für die Theoriebildung in den Geisteswissenschaften. The aesthetics and scientific programme of Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776–1841) are largely forgotten today, although being of key importance in the 19th century just as the theoretical tradition that followed Herbart. The Herbartian scientific programme did not only initiate the decline of idealism, but also laid essential foundations for art and music studies, structuralism, »Völkerpsychologie«, psychoanalysis and the Vienna Circle. The study shows, that the Herbartian aesthetics have been as fundamental for the functionalist idea of form in literary and art studies as well as for the theory formation in the humanities.

    How the use of machine learning to analyze art images has revived formalism in art history, presenting a golden opportunity for art historians and computer scientists to learn from one another.Though formalism is an essential tool for art historians, much recent art history has focused on the social and political aspects of art. But now art historians are adopting machine learning methods to develop new ways to analyze the purely visual in datasets of art images. Amanda Wasielewski uses the term “computational formalism” todescribe this use of machine learning and computer vision technique in art historical research. At the same time that art historians are analyzing art images in new ways, computer scientists are using art images for experiments in machine learning and computer vision. Their research, says Wasielewski, would be greatly enriched by the inclusion of humanistic issues.The main purpose in applying computational techniques such as machine learning to art datasets is to automate the process of categorization using metrics such as style, a historically fraught concept in art history. After examining a fifteen-year trajectory in image categorization and art dataset creation in the fields of machine learning and computer vision, Wasielewski considers deep learning techniques that both create and detect forgeries and fakes in art. She investigates examples of art historical analysis in the fields of computer and information sciences, placing this research in the context of art historiography. She also raises questions as which artworks are chosen for digitization, and of those artworks that are born digital, which works gain acceptance into the canon of high art.

    This article seeks to push further scholarly interest and discussion about the ancient Jewish use of the oracle of lot, which has historically been hindered by its categorization as a divinatory method, by including ritual into its categorization. This article explores the ways in which the oracle of lot, as portrayed in Jewish literature, can be categorized under Catharine Bell’s description of ritual-like activity. First, the article gives a general overview of the methods, materials, and functions that the oracle of lot had in the ancient world. Following this discussion, we move on to four case studies where we examine the ritual-like characteristics of the oracle of lot as attested in four Jewish texts: 1 Samuel 14, Jonah 1, Esther 3, and the Community Rule (1QS).

Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung waren. Das herbartianische Wissenschaftsprogramm leitete nicht nur den Untergang des Idealismus ein, sondern legte auch wichtige Grundlagen für die Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft, den Strukturalismus, die Völkerpsychologie, die Psychoanalyse und den Wiener Kreis.     An argument that humanists have the tools—and the responsibility—to mobilize political power to tackle climate changeAs climate catastrophes intensify, why do literary and cultural studies scholars so often remain committed to the separation of aesthetic study from the nitty-gritty of political change? In this thought-provoking book, Caroline Levine makes the case for an alternative view, arguing that humanists have the tools to mobilize political power—and the responsibility to use those tools to avert the worst impacts of global warming. Building on the theory developed in her award-winning book, Forms, Levine shows how formalist methods can be used in the fight for climate justice.Countering scholars in the environmental humanities who embrace only “modest gestures of care”—and who seem to have moved directly to “mourning” our inevitable environmental losses—Levine argues that large-scale, practical environmental activism should be integral to humanists’ work. She identifies three major infrastructural forms crucial to sustaining collective life: routines, pathways, and enclosures. Crisscrossing between art works and public works—from urban transportation to television series and from food security programs to rhyming couplets—she considers which forms might support stability and predictability in the face of growing precarity. Finally, bridging the gap between academic and practical work, Levine offers a series of questions and exercises intended to guide readers into political action.
