    This book provides a new literary treatment of an often-overlooked collection of fragmentary poems from the third century B.C.E. Alexandrian poet Callimachus. Callimachus' Iambi form a collection of thirteen poems, which rework archaic Greek iambography and look forward to Roman satire and other genres, especially to such collections as Horace's Epodes. The poems are especially significant as examples of cultural memory since they are composed both as an act of commemorating earlier poetry and as a manipulation of traditional features of iambic poetry to refashion the iambic genre. This book fills a significant gap by providing the first complete translation of several of these fragmentary poems in English, along with line-by-line commentary, notes, and literary analysis.The structure of the book is thematic, with chapters focusing on such topics as poetic voice, fable, ethical criticism, and statuary. Each chapter consists of an introduction, text and selected critical apparatus, translation, and comprehensive thematic discussion. Acosta-Hughes focuses especially on Callimachus' manipulation of traditional features of archaic iambic poetry such as persona loquens, ethical and critical message, and eristic dialogue. He also includes a detailed analysis of the Alexandrian poet's artistic relationship with the earlier iambic poets Archilochus and Hipponax.Polyeideia will interest not only readers of Greek and Hellenistic poetry but also readers of Roman satire and invective verse, as well as those intrigued by the processes of memorializing and fashioning poetic culture

    Recent scholarship has entertained the possibility that Jotham's Parable of the Trees (Judg 9:8-15) is derived from the Greek text of one of Aesop's Fables (Perry 262). This article refutes this notion, tracing the dependence of Aesop's fable on one Septuagint tradition, which itself is a translation of the Hebrew. The article goes on to propose a pre-exilic setting for the biblical fable, based not on its foregrounded opinion of monarchy, but on its background assumptions of deity.

Es geht um Identität und Alterität, um Eigensinn und Gemeinsinn, um Selbstbehauptung, Kooperation, Konfliktaustragung und Mitleid, um Generationenordnungen, Geschlechterverhältnisse, soziale Herkunft und Diskriminierung, Identität und Fremdheit, um Kultur und Natur, um Liebe und Aggression, Wut, Hass, letztendlich um Gut und Böse. The research question is: Why does season 1 of ‚Warrior Cats‘ captivate young people? It is - encoded in the form as a fable - a season of a complex story of the development of adolescents in social figurations and embedded in ecological contexts, composed in a web of complexity of independend novel-like narrativec connected with subtexts of development challenges als polarities of possible directions about identity and alterity, about self-will and expectation of public spirit, about self-assertion, cooperation, conflict resolution and ethics of compassion, social learning aoif empathy and virtues of social help, about the grammar of generational orders, gender relations, social origin and discrimination, identity and strangeness, about culture and nature, about love and aggression, anger, hate, at the end about good and evil.

    Based on versions of the Fables by Phaedrus and Babrius, Niklas Holzberg offers us the first bilingual edition of the collection of Greek prose fables transmitted under the name of Aesop (first/second centuries CE). In the manuscripts, the fables follow a fictional vita of the narrator, a biography that profoundly influenced the modern genre of the picaresque novel. It is translated for the first time into German here based on sound scholarship. Bisher gibt es keine Bilingue, auch nicht in englischer Sprache, die Leben und Fabeln Äsops zusammen präsentiert; sie sind aber in den Handschriften zusammen überliefert. Während die Fabeln mehrfach in Übersetzung erschienen, gab es bisher die Vita, die auch als Äsop-Roman bezeichnet wird, nur in einer sehr freien DDR-Übersetzung (Slg. Dietrich). Sie ist aber von größtem Interesse, weil sie, erstmals in Steinhöwels Esopus von 1476 erschienen, einem der größten Bucherfolge der frühen Neuzeit (vergleichbar ist nur die Bibel), den neuzeitlichen pikaresken Roman stark beeinflusst hat. Die Fabeln sind ganz neu auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage übersetzt; Holzberg ist u.a. Verfasser von "Die antike Fabel", WBG 3. Aufl. 2012, engl. Übers. Indiana UP 2002, und als Fabelforscher auch in anderen Literaturwissenschaften international bekannt. Auch für Theologen ist die Vita interessant, weil sie eine auffallende Motivähnlichkeit mit derjenigen Christi in den Evangelien hat.

    In 1 Cor. 12.12-30, Paul addresses factionalism in Corinth by rhetorically reworking the famed fable of the Members and the Belly. Whereas historiographical narratives typically depict Menenius Agrippa using this fable about talking body parts to restore the status quo of plebeian submission, Paul uses certain elements of the fable to make his disruptive case for unity among the Corinthians. Paul's subversive embellishment of the fable excises the belly, which plays a central role in the older tale. Other Pauline discussions of the ancient belly help to make sense of this surprising surgical move, one of Paul's many rhetorical maneuvers that are aligned with the prescriptions found in ancient handbooks of preliminary exercises, or progymnasmata.

    Die Fabeln des Phaedrus wurden lange unter motiv- oder sozialgeschichtlichen Aspekten gelesen; man meinte, durch den ,Freigelassenen des Augustus' die Stimme des ,Kleinen Mannes' zu hören, der pessimistisch die Anpassung predige. Ferner wurde meist ein biographischer Deutungsansatz verfolgt, der die Gedichte aus der vermeintlichen Lebenserfahrung des Dichters ableitete. Dabei wurde zu wenig berücksichtigt, dass diese ,Lebensdaten' mehr oder weniger gänzlich aus den Fabeln erschlossen wurden; viele dieser Elemente geben sich zudem als poetologische Topoi zu erkennen, sodass sich das Ich eher zu tarnen als zu offenbaren scheint. Schließlich fand das intendierte (Lese-)Publikum zu wenig Beachtung, denn der Dichter verlangt nicht nur selbst Belesenheit, vielmehr erschließt sich die Vielschichtigkeit der zunächst so simpel erscheinenden Gedichte erst bei Beachtung der zahlreichen intertextuellen Bezüge. Lässt man sich aber auf diese Weise auf die Fabeln ein, lernt man Texte kennen, die sich spielerisch, witzig und eigenwillig in die literarische Tradition und den Diskurs ihrer Zeit einreihen und so selbstreflektiert auch zu Fabeln über die Dichtung werden.

    Animal Narratology interrogates what it means to narrate, to speak—speak for, on behalf of—and to voice, or represent life beyond the human, which is in itself as different as insects, bears, and dogs are from each other, and yet more, as individual as a single mouse, horse, or puma. The varied contributions to this interdisciplinary Special Issue highlight assumptions about the human perception of, attitude toward, and responsibility for the animals that are read and written about, thus demonstrating that just as “the animal” does not exist, neither does “the human”. In their zoopoetic focus, the analyses are aware that animal narratology ultimately always contains an approximation of an animal perspective in human terms and terminology, yet they make clear that what matters is how the animal is approximated and that there is an effort to approach and encounter the non-human in the first place. Many of the analyses come to the conclusion that literary animals give readers the opportunity to expand their own points of view both on themselves and others by adopting another’s perspective to the degree that such an endeavor is possible. Ultimately, the contributions call for a recognition of the many spaces, moments, and modes in which human lives are entangled with those of animals—one of which is located within the creative bounds of storytelling.

    La Fable mystique de Michel de Certeau associe à l’expérience mystique du xiie au xviiie siècle un inédit « système de différenciation des discours qui articule un nouvel espace de savoir ». Dans ce système instable, le désir de Dieu ou l’union à Dieu se relient à des pratiques de discours nécessairement singulières : l’union à la divinité immédiate, sans intermédiaire, sans pensée, sans mots, l’expérience de l’anéantissement ne se disent pas mais se désignent depuis un langage paradoxal. Ce sont ces expériences, ces langages que des spécialistes d’art, d’histoire de l’art, d’histoire de la pensée, de littérature examinent dans ce volume, en confrontant les débats d’idées, les systèmes de pensée aux formes de langage et de représentation.
