    "Casuistry and Early Modern Spanish Literature examines a neglected yet crucial field: the importance of casuistic thought and discourse in development of literary genres in early modern Spain. Faced with the momentous changes wrought by discovery, empire, religious schism, expanding print culture, consolidation of legal codes and social transformation, writers sought innovation within existing forms (the novella, the byzantine romance, theatrical drama) and created novel genres (most notably, the picaresque). These essays show how casuistry, with its questioning of example and precept, and meticulous concern with conscience the particularities of circumstance, is instrumental in cultivating the subjectivity, rhetorical virtuosity and spirit of inquiry that we have come to associate with the modern novel"--

    "Wound Building is a volume of essays, with digressions, on one group of contemporary poets active in a self-organizing political poetry scene in the UK, most of whom have little to no audience outside of the little magazines that they publish and the reading series they put on. The book is a front-line report on the rapid development of this poetry in the period between 2015 and 2020, with a particular focus on the relationship of poetry to violence and its representation ... Ultimately, Hayward argues that the lessons this poetry teaches is never to write a "worthy" narrative when a fucked up collage will do. Rather than a cohesive "account" of a "school" of poets, or a "contribution" to the boring tittle-tattle of aesthetic debates over British poetry as an institution, Wound Building is a front-line report on the local disasters of a contemporary UK poetry caught in the grip of the historical cataclysm of capitalist culture. Wound Building is further concerned with aesthetic problems related to Marxism, anarchism, contemporary trans politics, and class, though its "theoretical" preoccupations are subordinated to its desire to provide a ground-level view on the writing itself, its production, its intellectual aporia, and the ways it finds itself outstripped by the ongoing "march of events" ... It spans diverse inter-generational perspectives – from those who leave Guyana, and those who are left – and seven seminal decades of Guyana’s history – from the 1950s to the present day – bringing the voices of women to the fore. The volume is conceived of as a visual exhibition on the page; a four-part journey navigating the contributors’ essays and artworks, allowing the reader to trace the migration path of Guyanese women from their moment of departure, to their arrival on diasporic soils, to their reunion with Guyana.

    Eloquent and visually stunning, Liminal Spaces unpacks the global realities of migration, challenging and disrupting dominant narratives associated with Guyana, its colonial past, and its post-colonial present as a ‘disappearing nation’. Multimodal in approach, the volume combines memoir, creative non-fiction, poetry, photography, art and curatorial essays to collectively examine the mutable notion of ‘homeland’, and grapple with ideas of place and accountability.This volume is a welcome contribution to the scholarly field of international migration, transnationalism, and diaspora, both in its creative methodological approach, and in its subject area – as one of the only studies published on Guyanese diaspora.     On Human Nature: A Gathering While Everything Flows brings together the late essays, autobiographical reflections, an interview, and a poem by the eminent literary theorist and cultural critic Kenneth Burke (1897-1993). Burke, author of Language as Symbolic Action, A Grammar of Motives, and Rhetoric of Motives, among other works, was an innovative and original thinker who worked at the intersection of sociology, psychology, literary theory, and semiotics. This book, a selection of fourteen representative pieces of his productive later years, addresses many important themes Burke tackled throughout his career such as logology (his attempt to find a universal language theory and methodology), technology, and ecology. The essays also elaborate Burke's notions about creativity and its relation to stress, language and its literary uses, the relation of mind and body, and more.     The very title of this book ("Dare being European!") signals that engagement with Europe is imperative. Its three larger sections reflect this engagement in some of its educational, historical and present-day dimensions. These reflections, interventions and essays emphasize the actual intellectual substance of discourses on Europe with explicit references to the rather surprisingly poetic rendering of European concerns. The implication of the texts is an appeal to take up current and future discourses on Europe more pro-actively and to counteract tendencies that undermine the project of European integration, such as renewed nationalism and ill-conceived and outdated conceptions of sovereignty. We need to entertain a different understanding of 'defending Europe', which does not primarily mean securing the borders of the European Union but defending Europe from within, including its cultural values, as well as reforming and enhancing its democratic structures

In drei größeren Abschnitten reflektieren diese Aufzeichnungen, Interventionen und Reden seine bildungspolitischen, ideen­geschichtlichen und gegenwartsbezogenen Dimensionen.Auch wenn ihre jeweilige Tragweite nur angedeutet werden kann, bieten diese Texte doch einige Wesenskerne in der Entwicklung der diversen Europa-Diskurse. Eigens betont Europa wagen! die poetische Form dieser Diskurse und leitet deswegen diese Überlegungen mit einem Blick auf eine Anthologie ein, die so ungewöhnlich ist wie das Gesamtprojekt ‚Europa‘ selbst. Der Titel besteht aus einem Imperativ. Aus ihm leitet sich die in den drei Hauptabschnitten thematisierte Forderung ab, die Diskurse über Europa offensiv zu führen, an der weiteren Ausgestaltung des europäischen Projekts mitzuarbeiten – gerade weil Entwicklungen wie der Brexit, verschärfte Nationalismen und veraltete Vorstellungen von Souveränität dieses Projekt neu herausfordern, ja zu unterminieren drohen. Das ‚wehrhafte Europa‘ meint nicht in erster Linie die Sicherung der Außengrenzen der Union, sondern die Auseinandersetzung mit den Gegnern der europäischen Integration innerhalb der europäischen Kulturgemeinschaft und den Ausbau ihrer demokratischen Strukturen.
