Abstract: This paper reviews a semi-diplomatic edition of the oldest gloss commentary on Martianus Capella's De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii, a popular fifth-century encyclopaedic allegory of the seven liberal arts. Based on and including facsimiles of a ninth-century manuscript from Leiden University Library (Vossianus Latinus Folio 48), the edition was produced collaboratively by various specialists. While it succeeds in providing full access to an important textual witness to a rich commentary tradition – the complex nature of which defies any attempts at capture in a print edition – the integration of a deeper critical analysis of the textual transmission and an augmentation of the material presented is still desirable

Abstract: The William Blake Archive (WBA) attempts to remediate digitally William Blake’s entire corpus of poetic and artistic artifacts. The resulting website exhibits high-fidelity images of his surviving prints, plates, drawings, and canvases that would otherwise remain isolated in difficult-to-access collections around the world. Using an editorial strategy that focuses on the physical object, the WBA successfully individuates physical copies of Blake’s work by supplementing each digital facsimile with unique bibliographic information, editorial commentary, and viewing tools that help users investigate the object’s unique material nature. Functionally, the site would greatly benefit from updates to its user interface and key applet (the Virtual Light Box). The project succeeds as a scholarly digital edition by providing curated and contextualized access to Blake’s literary and artistic output, implementing its core editorial strategy since the archive was launched twenty years ago, in ...

Abstract: Jane Austen’s Fiction Manuscripts Digital Edition (JAFM), edited by Kathryn Sutherland, provides high-resolution pages images and diplomatic transcriptions for all of Austen’s surviving fiction manuscripts (totalling approximately 1100 manuscript pages), all unpublished in her lifetime. It assesses the site’s editorial principles, functionality, and contribution to Austen studies, digital scholarship, and textual editing. As a site that offers diplomatic transcriptions not reading texts — what Elena Pierrazo (the Technical Research Associate) has termed ‘Digital Documentary Editions ’— JAFM offers an excellent opportunity to investigate the ways in which the print paradigm for textual editing is being reimagined and reshaped for digital editions

Abstract: This essay reviews The Casebooks Project, an ambitious attempt to digitize 80,000 astrological medical records from early modern England. The Casebooks Project exemplifies the possibilities of using digital technologies to understand early modern cultural and intellectual history, and offers us insight into the process of creating such a project. However, it remains unclear who the project’s audience is, whether to see it purely as a ‘dataset’ or as a textual-based digital edition, and how public-facing the project wants to be. This review seeks to use the digital edition and Dr. Lauren Kassell’s ongoing scholarly and public reflections on the project to highlight the project’s successes and suggest further possibilities it may inspire

Abstract: This review addresses the redesign of the William Blake Archive (WBA), which launched 12 December 2016, updating our previous review of the Archive, published in early 2017. Through this update, described as ‘a complete and transformative redesign,’ all of the content of the previous site has been retained, with improvements to the overall aesthetic appeal and functionality. These functionality updates principally consist of a modernized navigation system; a redesigned Object View page that organizes WBA’s scholarly tools within a matrix of panels; and a more comprehensive archival search engine. These new features provide users with enhanced opportunities for interacting with the objects contained in the archive. The notable shortcoming of this update is that the many of WBA’s formerly comprehensive help documentation and tutorial features have not been updated. Both new and veteran users would benefit from the reintroduction of clear, organized documentation to explain the ...

Abstract: The scholarly digital edition of the Theodor Fontane: Notizbücher provides open access, for the first time, to the full scope of the 19th-century German writer’s notebooks. The project has a strong focus on the materiality of the documents, which is reflected not only in meticulous diplomatic transcriptions of Fontane’s notes, presented in their material contexts, but also in an extremely detailed documentation of the editorial principles and guidelines. The edition, thus, situates itself in an increased scholarly interest in materiality and mediality in the humanities since the ‘material turn’. Particularly, the edition contributes to a reassessment of the genre of the notebook as a portable “writing lab”. Notwithstanding these major achievements, questions remain regarding the present status and future development of the digital edition project, which was funded from 2011 to 2019. The edition interface is still a beta version and work on the scholarly commentary seems ...

Abstract: The publication of Andreas Okopenko’s diaries from 1949 to 1954 is a digital edition that includes carefully transcribed diary entries with thoughtful and transparent, although not always easily accessible, editing guidelines. The presentation of the digital edition offers engagement with the contents in different ways, whether reading the diaries in chronological order or exploring them through linked data and indexes, but a full-text search is missing. The research data collected is enriched with metadata and available for subsequent use in a repository in the form of TEI-XML files and with an open license. Although API exists, the generated research data is not yet fully integrated in the overarching infrastructure for digital editions at the Austrian National Library (ÖNB). The project took a hybrid approach and published a printed edition subsequently, which, curiously, covers a longer period than the digital edition. The website, however, lacks information on whether there ...
