    Die uns umgebenden Dinge haben mehr Bedeutung, als einfach nur Gegenstände zu sein. Sie sind Bestandteil eines Geflechts von Praxen, Ikonographien, Verweisen, Konstellationen und Arrangements. Mit bzw. durch Dinge/n werden wir erst zu dem, was wir sind. Dieser Umstand wird in der Gestaltung politischer Bildungsprozesse weitgehend ignoriert. Stattdessen wird weiterhin von einem Repräsentationsverhältnis ausgegangen, welches die Dinge in einem passiven Sosein auf Distanz hält. Damit bleibt die Konstitution politischer Subjektivität im Medium gesellschaftlicher Materialität (politische Bildungen), im Denkbild rein kognitiver Entwicklung gebannt. Um den Herausforderungen der Gegenwart begegnen zu können, darf politische Bildung aber nicht allein im Rahmen eines didaktisierten Wissensaufbaus schematisiert werden. Politische Bildungen müssen auch als Artikulationen demokratischer Subjektivität in einer gesellschaftlich-politischen Materialität entfaltet werden. They are interwoven within a network of practices, inscriptions, iconographies, references and constellations. Only by means of and together with objects do we become what we are. This fact is widely ignored when educational processes are didactically designed. Instead, political education is still based on a representative relationship which keeps objects at bay in a passive state. In this way, however, the constitution of political subjectivity in the network of social materiality—political education—remains confined to the concept of a purely cognitive development. To meet the challenges of our present time, political education should no longer be schematised within the framework of didactically prepared knowledge building. Political education also has to be contrived as a performative statement of democratic subjectivity in the network of social and political materiality.     Edmond Jabès was one of the most intriguing Jewish thinkers of the 20th century – a poet for the public and a Kabbalist for those who read his work more closely. This book turns his writings into a ground-breaking philosophical achievement: thinking which is manifestly indebted to the Kabbalah, but in the post-religious and post-Shoah world. Loss, exile, negativity, God’s absence, writing and Jewishness are the main signposts of the negative ontology which this book offers as an interpretation of Jabès’ work. On the basis of it, the book examines the nature of the miraculous encounter between Judaism and philosophy which occurred in the 20th century. Modern Jewish philosophy is a re-constructed tradition which adapts the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Judaism to answer purely modern questions.

Pray what is the matter with me?" The plaint of an anonymous reader in 1712 sounds with endearing frankness a note of consternation that resonates throughout The Faerie Queene's reception history, from its first known reader, Spenser's friend Gabriel Harvey, who urged him to write anything else instead, to Virginia Woolf, who insisted that if one wants to like the poem, "the first essential is, of course, not to read" it. For more than four centuries critics have sought to counter this strain of readerly resistance, but rather than trying to remedy the frustrations and failures of Spenser's readers, Catherine Nicholson cherishes them as a sensitive barometer of shifts in the culture of reading itself.Indeed, tracking the poem's mixed fortunes in the hands of its bored, baffled, outraged, intoxicated, obsessive, and exhausted readers turns out to be an excellent way of rethinking the past and future prospects of literary study.     What is Sappho, except a name? Although the Greek archaic lyrics attributed to Sappho of Lesbos survive only in fragments, she has been invoked for many centuries as the original woman poet, singing at the origins of a Western lyric tradition. Victorian Sappho traces the emergence of this idealized feminine figure through reconstructions of the Sapphic fragments in late-nineteenth-century England. Yopie Prins argues that the Victorian period is a critical turning point in the history of Sappho's reception; what we now call "Sappho" is in many ways an artifact of Victorian poetics. Prins reads the Sapphic fragments in Greek alongside various English translations and imitations, considering a wide range of Victorian poets--male and female, famous and forgotten--who signed their poetry in the name of Sappho. By "declining" the name in each chapter, the book presents a theoretical argument about the Sapphic signature, as well as a historical account of its implications in Victorian England. Prins explores the relations between classical philology and Victorian poetics, the tropes of lesbian writing, the aesthetics of meter, and nineteenth-century personifications of the "Poetess." as current scholarship on Sappho and her afterlife. Offering a history and theory of lyric as a gendered literary form, the book is an exciting and original contribution to Victorian studies, classical studies, comparative literature, and women's studies

    Staat und Recht stützen sich auf eine unhintergehbare Gewalt, die Gerechtigkeit nur unabhängig vom Recht denken lässt und damit von den Prinzipien der Allgemeinheit und Gleichheit. Sie zielt darauf ab, dem Ereignis wie dem Einzelnen gerecht zu werden, was nur durch einen vorbehaltlosen Blick auf die damit verbundenen Probleme gelingen kann. Dazu muss jeder begriffliche Zugriff bis in seine letzten Aporien hinterfragt werden. Das ist der Sinn der Dekonstruktion, der es immer schon originär darum geht, dem Ereignis gerecht zu werden. Demokratie lässt sich nicht vollenden, immer nur weiter ausbauen, was jeder Idee eines starken Staates widerspricht. Demokratie verlangt den mündigen d.h. dekonstruierenden Bürger, den es längst gibt, wenn viele den diversen Welterklärungen misstrauen. Derridas Staatsverständnis geht von einer unüberbrückbaren Differenz zwischen Recht und Gerechtigkeit aus, was die Demokratie als notorisch ungenügend vorführt, um die sich daher Staat wie Bürger immer mit dem Ziel bemühen müssen, deren Emanzipation als Individuen zu befördern. The state and the law are based on inescapable power, which means that justice can only be regarded as being independent of the law and thus of the principles of generality and equality. Justice aims to satisfy both ‘the event’ and ‘the individual’, which can only be achieved by examining the problems connected to it without bias. Therefore, every conceptual approach related to this state of affairs has to be analysed down to its last inconsistency. That is the point of deconstruction, which has always been concerned with doing justice to the event in question. Democracy cannot be completed, only further developed, which contradicts the idea of a strong state. Democracy demands responsible citizens, that is, those who are willing and able to deconstruct, who have perennially come to the fore whenever people have distrusted the diverse interpretations of the world that have been proposed. Derrida’s understanding of the state assumes there is an unbridgeable gap between the law and justice that exposes democracy as being notoriously insufficient, which both the state and its citizens therefore have to uphold in order to strive for their emancipation as individuals.

    Having learned many useful lessons from the movement of deconstruction over the previous decades, it is high time for our discipline to move forward and begin reconstructing the study of religion as a whole on new and better foundations. If we want to have our voices heard and have an impact on the wider public debate instead of being marginalized and defunded as irrelevant, we need a positive and convincing, even inspiring new narrative about religion that demonstrates its great importance not just to societal but to general human concerns. The article outlines one possible direction for such a new narrative, focusing on the key terms ‘experience,' ‘consciousness,' ‘imagination,' and ‘spirituality.' Far from implying a new kind of religionism along the lines of the Eranos or Eliade schools, this means that we should move such topics out of the taboo sphere for secular scholars and reclaim them for critical non-religionist methods and approaches.

Religion kann jedoch nicht einfach mit kulturellen Akten gleichgesetzt werden, wie es oft in liberalprotestantischen Ansätzen und in Konzeptionen einer Öffentlichen Theologie der Fall ist. Alternativ wird daher das Gespräch mit poststrukturalistischen Autoren (Derrida, Nancy) gesucht, um von ihm her einen Bezug zur offenen Metaphorik des sozialen Bandes (der Religion) und zur These seiner Performanz zu suchen. The article raises the following question: in what regard does religion have its own way of building a social bond? The metaphor of the social bond accentuates that social cohesion and bonding in a society of individuals evolves in performative acts of culture. However, religion cannot simply be identified with cultural acts, as is often the case in recent studies on religion’s contribution to the common good and to the social capital of society in Protestant liberal theology. To avoid this shortcoming, the article investigates the work of poststructuralist thinkers, Derrida and Nancy, to point out the aporetic nature of the social bond in religion and its opening of the immanence of the social world.

Damit bleibt die Konstitution politischer Subjektivität im Medium gesellschaftlicher Materialität (politische Bildungen), im Denkbild rein kognitiver Entwicklung gebannt. Um den Herausforderungen der Gegenwart begegnen zu können, darf politische Bildung aber nicht allein im Rahmen eines didaktisierten Wissensaufbaus schematisiert werden. Politische Bildungen müssen auch als Artikulationen demokratischer Subjektivität in einer gesellschaftlich-politischen Materialität entfaltet werden. They are interwoven within a network of practices, inscriptions, iconographies, references and constellations. Only by means of and together with objects do we become what we are. This fact is widely ignored when educational processes are didactically designed. Instead, political education is still based on a representative relationship which keeps objects at bay in a passive state. In this way, however, the constitution of political subjectivity in the network of social materiality—political education—remains confined to the concept of a purely cognitive development. To meet the challenges of our present time, political education should no longer be schematised within the framework of didactically prepared knowledge building. Political education also has to be contrived as a performative statement of democratic subjectivity in the network of social and political materiality.     How do we read after the so-called death of literature? If we are to attend to the proclamations that the representational apparatuses of literature and politics are dead, what aesthetic, ethical, and political possibilities remain for us today? Our critical moment, Graff Zivin argues, demands anarchaeological reading: reading for the blind spots, errors, points of opacity or untranslatability in works of philosophy and art.Rather than applying concepts from philosophy in order to understand or elucidate cultural works, the book exposes works of philosophy, literary theory, narrative, poetry, film, and performance art and activism to one another. Working specifically with art, film, and literature from Argentina (Jorge Luis Borges, Juán José Saer, Ricardo Piglia, César Aira, Albertina Carri, the Internacional Errorista), Graff Zivin allows such thinkers as Levinas, Derrida, Badiou, and Rancière to be inflected by Latin American cultural production. Through these acts of interdiscursive and interdisciplinary (or indisciplinary) exposure, such ethical and political concepts as identification and recognition, decision and event, sovereignty and will, are read as constitutively impossible, erroneous. Rather than weakening either ethics or politics, however, the anarchaeological reading these works stage and demand opens up and radicalizes the possibility of justice

    Published posthumously, Ending and Unending Agony is Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe’s only book entirely devoted to the French writer and essayist Maurice Blanchot (1907–2003). The place of Blanchot in Lacoue-Labarthe’s thought was both discreet and profound, involving difficult, agonizing questions about the status of literature, with vast political and ethical stakes.Together with Plato, Holderlin, Nietzsche, Benjamin, and Heidegger, Blanchot represents a decisive crossroads for Lacoue-Labarthe’s central concerns. In this book, they converge on the question of literature, and in particular of literature as the question of myth—in this instance, the myth of the writer born of the autobiographical experience of death.However, the issues at stake in this encounter are not merely autobiographical; they entail a relentless struggle with processes of figuration and mythicization inherited from the age-old concept of mimesis that permeates Western literature and culture.     This book examines the affinity between "theory" and "deconstruction" that developed in the American academy in the 1970s by way of the "Yale Critics": Harold Bloom, Paul de Man, Geoffrey Hartman, and J. Hillis Miller, sometimes joined by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida.With this semi-fictional collective, theory became a media event, first in the academy and then in the wider print media, in and through its phantasmatic link with deconstruction and with "Yale." The important role played by aesthetic humanism in American pedagogical discourse provides a context for understanding theory as an aesthetic scandal, and an examination of the ways in which de Man’s work challenges aesthetic pieties helps us understand why, by the 1980s, he above all had come to personify "theory."Combining a broad account of the "Yale Critics" phenomenon with a series of careful reexaminations of the event of theory, Redfield traces the threat posed by language’s unreliability and inhumanity in chapters on lyric, on Hartman’s representation of the Wordsworthian imagination, on Bloom’s early theory of influence in the 1970s together with his later media reinvention as the genius of the Western Canon, and on John Guillory’s influential attempt to interpret de Manian theory as a symptom of literature’s increasing marginality. A final chapter examines Mark Tansey’s paintings Derrida Queries de Man and Constructing the Grand Canyon, paintings that offer subtle, complex reflections on the peculiar event of theory-as-deconstruction in America

    Honorable Mention, 2018 MLA Prize for a First BookAgainst the defensive backdrop of countless apologetic justifications for the value of literature and the humanities, Futile Pleasures reframes the current conversation by returning to the literary culture of early modern England, a culture whose defensive posture toward literature rivals and shapes our own.During the Renaissance, poets justified the value of their work on the basis of the notion that the purpose of poetry is to please and instruct, that it must be both delightful and useful. At the same time, many of these writers faced the possibility that the pleasures of literature may be in conflict with the demand to be useful and valuable. Analyzing the rhetoric of pleasure and the pleasure of rhetoric in texts by William Shakespeare, Roger Ascham, Thomas Nashe, Edmund Spenser, and John Milton, McEleney explores the ambivalence these writers display toward literature’s potential for useless, frivolous vanity. Tracing that ambivalence forward to the modern era, this book also shows how contemporary critics have recapitulated Renaissance humanist ideals about aesthetic value. Against a longstanding tradition that defensively advocates for the redemptive utility of literature, Futile Pleasures both theorizes and performs the queer pleasures of futility. Without ever losing sight of the costs of those pleasures, McEleney argues that playing with futility may be one way of moving beyond the impasses that modern humanists, like their early modern counterparts, have always faced

    Die Ethik des Anderen im Werk von Emmanuel Lévinas beruht auf einem vollkommen neuen Denken der Zeit. In seiner Auseinandersetzung mit Heidegger, Husserl, Rosenzweig und anderen Autoren entwickelt Lévinas den für seine Alteritätsphilosophie so zentralen Begriff der Diachronie und bestimmt die Zeit im Ausgang einer primären Diskontinuität und Unabgeschlossenheit, die sich als ein originäres Struktur-Moment im Subjekt ausweisen lässt. An der Schnittstelle zwischen Ethik und Zeit bietet Lévinas’ Denken hier völlig neue Anschlussmöglichkeiten an andere Forschungskontexte, etwa der dekonstruktivistischen Queer Theory des Literaturwissenschaftlers Lee Edelman. Im Dialog zwischen beiden Forschungsfeldern lässt sich schließlich eine radikale Ethik der Alteration begründen.

    Jacques Derridas Diplomarbeit von 1953/54 „Das Problem der Genese in Husserls Philosophie“ ist eines jener Beispiele dafür, dass wichtige Philosophen und Philosophinnen auch schon in ihren frühen Arbeiten Außergewöhnliches leisten. Alexander Schnell liest in seiner Vorlesung „Der frühe Derrida und die Phänomenologie“ Derridas Schrift nicht nur als einen Schlüsseltext zu dessen eigenem Denken, sondern nachgerade zu einer zukünftigen Phänomenologie und zwar in Auseinandersetzung mit den Fragen und Problemen der Metaphysik. Dabei entfaltet er kenntnisreich nicht nur den sachlichen und historischen Zusammenhang, in dem Derridas Text sich befindet, sondern ebenso den sachlichen und historischen Kontext der von Derrida interpretierten Texte Husserls. Jacques Derrida's 1953/54 thesis "The Problem of Genesis in Husserl's Philosophy" is one of those examples of important philosophers reaching extraordinary levels of erudition even in their early work. In his lecture "Der frühe Derrida und die Phänomenologie", Alexander Schnell reads Derrida's thesis not only as prime example for Derrida´s own thinking, but also as a key text for a future phenomenology, namely in its confrontation with the questions and problems of metaphysics. In doing so, Schnell elaborately unfolds not only the factual and historical context in which Derrida's text itself is situated, but also the factual and historical context of Husserl's texts interpreted by Derrida.

    Die Studie präsentiert eine neue Lektüre von Nietzsches philosophischem Hauptwerk „Also sprach Zarathustra“. Der Text hat seit seinem ersten Erscheinen (1883–1885) extreme und stark divergierende Reaktionen hervorgerufen: Galt Nietzsche um 1900 als ‚Dichter-Philosoph‘, so bot zugleich die anti-demokratische und elitistische Haltung Anlass für vehemente politische Kritik. Die französische Philosophie der 1960er und -70er Jahre fand in Nietzsche hingegen den Kritiker und Freigeist par excellence. Den Sprachwitz von Nietzsches Text sowie dessen ironischen und parodistischen Charakter betonten poststrukturalistische Lesarten der 1980er und -90er Jahre. Vor dem Hintergrund einer bis heute fortwirkenden Spannung zwischen dekonstruktiven und hermeneutischen Zugriffen auf den Text unternimmt die Studie eine neue und konsequente Rekonstruktion der eigenwilligen Poetik von „Also sprach Zarathustra“.
