    With structural changes in production coupled with technological progress, there have been shifts in modes of production and patterns of employment, with important consequences on task composition of occupations. This paper has utilized different rounds of Labour Force Survey data of Bangladesh and combined it with occupation network data of the United States along with its country-specific database and analysed the role of such factors on labour market outcomes. Our analysis shows a fall in the average routine intensity of tasks with no evidence of job polarization. We find a decline in earnings inequality where the decomposition analysis shows that earnings structure effect rather than characteristics effect plays a key role, with routine-task intensity of jobs and education explaining the majority of differences in earnings. Our analysis suggests that investing in education should be the highest priority, with greater emphasis on skillbiased training programmes, particularly those involving cognitive skill.

    We estimate wage differentials between foreign- and native-born workers across developed and developing economies. We leverage internationally harmonised microdata covering 21 countries, 20 years and 1.5 million individuals and employ counterfactual decomposition techniques. We find that vis-à-vis comparable workers born in developed countries, the workers born in developing economies are disadvantaged both in their home country labour markets and - if migrating - also in developed host countries. Wage differentials suggest the opposite for workers born in developed countries - their wages are higher not only in developed countries but for migrants also in developing host countries. After accounting for personal and job-related characteristics, at least 28% of the total native-to-migrant wage gap remains unexplained. The unexplained wage gap has increased during the last decade and can be attributed to the labour market discrimination, differences in unobserved job characteristics, variation in unobserved skills, and the institutional labour market framework.

    The purpose of this article is to provide new evidence about the sources of regional income inequalities in Brazil along the wage distribution, taking into account the regional differentials in purchasing power. We use a unique and recent regional purchasing power index to adjust nominal values of the Brazilian metropolitan regions and consider recentred influence function (RIF) regressions to measure the contributions of different determinants of wages to the inequality between the São Paulo metropolitan region in the Southeast (the richest one, apart from Brasília) and each of the most important metropolitan regions of the Northeast (Fortaleza, Recife, and Salvador).

    This paper examines whether the welfare difference between youth (aged 15-35) and adult (aged over 35) headed households between 2001 and 2018 is attributable to differences in educational attainment following Universal Primary Education (UPE) in Tanzania. The recentered influence function (RIF) decomposition method applied to household budget survey (HBS) data for 2001 and 2018 reveals that the increase in youth educational attainment between 2001 and 2018 is significant in explaining the difference in welfare (measured as per adult equivalent household consumption relative to the national poverty line) between the 2001 and 2018 youth cohorts. The findings suggest that if the youth in 2001 had the same education endowment as their 2018 counterparts, their welfare would have been about 20% higher. The findings also show that differences in educational attainment are significant factors explaining differences in welfare between youth and adult headed households in each year. If adults had the same level of educational attainment as the youth, their welfare would have been about 40% and 32% higher in 2001 and 2018 respectively. Although there is evidence that returns to education declined for the youth (consistent with more educated youth entering the labour market), this does not appear to have had a significant effect on household welfare.

    The principal results of the statistical and econometrical studying of dynamics and factors of income inequality across the regions of The Russian Federation (RF) during 1995 - 2007 years have been presented at the paper. The objects of investigation have been the 79 subjects of RF. They have been described by variables: (a) population; (b) income per capita (at average for all population, living at the subject); (c) structure of income: the share of total income, obtained at average of all people in subjects, by five sources (their sum is equal to 100%): (1) business (enterprise) activity; (2) wages (salaries); (3) social transfers; (4) property; (5) other incomes. As the first step of "space - time" analysis dynamics and differentiation of seven named above indicators have been studied. The same initial indicators let us to estimate Total Monetary Income (TMI) and its five component TMI(k), k=1, . . .,5 for each from 79 regions of RF. The spatial distributions of new six variables and their evolution from beginning of transition up to crisis have been considered at the second step of investigation. The GINI and FUND coefficients have been calculated for TMI and for its five components. The subjects of TMI concentration have been determined by comparative level-dynamic analysis of these indicators. The same has been done for TMI(k) from five sources. It could say that practically each region of RF has had the different way of social - economic development. GINI decomposition by five sources of income, presented GINI as a linear combination of income structure and the Coefficients of Concentration, has been the next step of investigation. The results of decomposition indicated clear that two sources of income - (4) "properties" and (5) "other incomes" have been the main factors of interregional income inequality. There are "short lists" of subjects of RF, where the incomes from these two sources have been concentrated. The Decomposition method let us to discuss the different aspects of income inequality and make the emphasis at institutional factors of population economic activities and income redistribution.

    Bemerkung(en):

    While inequality of opportunity (IOp) in earnings is well studied, the literature on IOp in individual net wealth is scarce to non-existent. This is problematic because both theoretical and empirical evidence show that the position in the wealth and income distribution can significantly diverge.We measure ex-ante IOp in net wealth for Germany using data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Ex-ante IOp is defined as the contribution of circumstances to the inequality in net wealth before effort is exerted. The SOEP allows for a direct mapping from individual circumstances to individual net wealth and for a detailed decomposition of net wealth inequality into a variety of circumstances; among them childhood background, intergenerational transfers, and regional characteristics. The ratio of inequality of opportunity to total inequality is stable from 2002 to 2019. This is in sharp contrast to labor earnings, where ex-ante IOp is declining over time. Our estimates suggest that about 62% of the inequality in net wealth is due to circumstances. The most important circumstances are intergenerational transfers, parental occupation, and the region of birth. In contrast, gender and individuals’ own education are the most important circumstances for earnings

    In this paper we provide a method to characterise global value chains and a related decomposition of bilateral gross exports by distinguishing three different stages of the value-added flows: (i) the source of value added, (ii) the final assembly stage of a product, and (iii) the final absorption (sink) of this product. Methodologically this is embedded in a simple framework using matrix algebra allowing for intuitive interpretations of the individual decomposition terms and results. The approach leads to a novel decomposition of bilateral gross export flows and related value-added trade indicators. It is shown how these correspond to existing measures using the property of inverse matrices. Specifically, the paper sheds light on the nature of the double-counting terms discussed in the literature. Finally, the approach outlined is extended by incorporating insights from the hypothetical extraction method. We argue that this is a complementary approach which however can be used to flexibly define the value chains of interest and characterise the respective flows that are considered part of this defined value chain, again carefully differentiating the source, assembly, and sink dimensions.

    This paper looks at the gender wage gap throughout the transition from communism to capitalism and throughout a time of rapid economic convergence. The case of Estonia is used, and micro data from the Labour Force Survey from 1989 to 2020 are employed. The communist regimes had highly regulated wage setting and high levels of educational attainment and labour market participation for women. Although the regime was formally egalitarian, the gender attitudes were conservative and the raw gender wage gap was as large as 41% at the end of the communist period in Estonia. The large gender wage gap under communist rule narrowed quickly during the first years of economic transition, but the further decline in the gap has been slow. The paper has two main messages. The first is that there is strong inertia in the gender wage gap persisting through the communist period and economic convergence. None of the known long-run cultural drivers of gender attitudes can explain this. The second is that the decline in the gap is related to the overall decline in wage inequality, the rise in minimum wages, and more egalitarian gender attitudes. The gender attitudes are responsible for a smaller effect than wage inequality is.

    This paper aims to decompose the sources of growth in economies in the Southern African region's Common Monetary Area and in the provinces of South Africa. Decomposition results for the Common Monetary Area reveal that the growth of aggregate and sectoral gross domestic product is driven by input, without increasing efficiency in production or benefiting from technological progress, which is unsustainable. Negative technical change implies that countries are unable to reap the benefits from shifts in technology. Countries experiencing input-driven growth in the secondary sector, such as Namibia and Eswatini, have the potential to achieve growth through efficiency improvements and by adopting technology. Output growth in the provinces of South Africa is negatively contributed by changes in technical efficiency, which suggests that policy makers should raise growth further by emphasizing improvements in efficiency in these provinces.

    We decompose the ethnic pay gap in Great Britain across the distribution of hourly wages, yielding a detailed insight into differences between groups and how these vary over pay percentiles and through time. While some groups experience reductions in the pay gap consistent with lower discrimination, including relatively well paid Indian workers and relatively poorly paid Bangladeshis, others - specifically Black groups - face an apparent glass ceiling barring access to well paid jobs. The increasing educational attainment of Britain's ethnic groups provides some optimism around narrowing pay differentials, particularly at the top of the distribution, while the introduction and uprating of the National Minimum/Living Wage has contributed to improvements at the lower end.

    We offer a decomposition for the variance of the current unemployment rate that not only measures the contributions of labor market flows but also of the approximation error embedded in other decompositions that use surrogates for the current rate. Using data for the United States and Brazil, the results for the latter show significant differences in the flows' contributions and non-negligible distortions of approximation errors when the variance of the current (instead of the proxy) rate is decomposed; for the U.S., no substantial changes are detected.
