    Die Musik des 20. und bisherigen 21. Jahrhunderts ist geprägt von einer nie dagewesenen Komplexität kompositorischer Ansätze, die mit dem Aufbrechen der herkömmlichen Dur-Moll-Tonalität begann und mit den multimedialen Möglichkeiten des neuen Jahrhunderts noch lange nicht zu Ende ist. Auch die vor allem nach 1950 eingetretene fundamentale Wandlung ästhetischer Positionen aufgrund gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche hat ihre Spuren in der Musik hinterlassen. Der Begriff der Musik entwickelte sich im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einem vielschichtigen Topos pluraler Musiken, basierend u.a. auf neuen kompositorischen Mitteln, interkulturellen Begegnungen, unterschiedlichen medialen Zugängen und nicht zuletzt einem Wandel ästhetischer Rezeptionsmechanismen. Im vorliegenden Band werden Referate zu diesem Themenkomplex aus der Rubrik „Freie Referate“ des 15. Internationalen Kongresses der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung, der vom 4.–8. September 2012 in Göttingen unter dem Motto „Musik | Musiken. Strukturen und Prozesse“ stattfand, zusammengefasst. Das Panorama reicht dabei von Fragen nach einer kompositorischen Spätstilistik, kulturellen Austauschprozessen, musikalischen Grenzerfahrungen und intermedialen Exotismen bis hin zu multimedialen Klanginstallationen und Musiktheaterkompositionen und dem damit verbundenen Aufbrechen tradierter Gattungsgefüge.

This book’s chapters are structured into six key areas: historically informed performance; ethnomusicological perspectives; particular musical works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" war histories; operatic works that works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" power or enlightenment; musical works that deploy the body and a broad range of senses to convey histories; and histories involving popular music and performance. Diverse lines of evidence and manifold methodologies are represented here, ranging from traditional historical archival research to interviewing, performing, and composing. The modes of analyzing music and its associated texts represented here are as various as the kinds of evidence explored, including, for example, reading historical accounts against other contextual backdrops, and reading "between the lines" to access other voices than those provided by mainstream interpretation or traditional musicology

Much of the history of how Jesuit traditions contributed to the development of rhetorical theory and pedagogy has been lost, effaced, or dispersed.     150. Geburtstag Arnold Schönberg! Arnold Schönbergs Streichquartett op. 7 gehört zu den anspruchsvollsten Kammermusikwerken der Spätromantik. Die Monographie des Hamburger Musikwissenschaftlers Peter Petersen geht das Werk aus drei Richtungen an: (1) Themen und Motive werden identifiziert, wobei ein vom Komponisten unerwähntes Thema ans Licht kommt; (2) der Verlauf des Quartettsatzes wird musikdramaturgisch analysiert und so der Aspekt der Viersätzigkeit in der Einsätzigkeit erweitert; (3) das von Schönberg verschwiegene, inzwischen bekannte Programm einer Liebesgeschichte wird in seiner ästhetischen Relevanz für das Werkganze untersucht – mit dem Ergebnis, dass es nur teilweise den Gang der Komposition gesteuert, der musikalischen Phantasie aber eine Richtung gegeben hat. Arnold Schönberg's String Quartet op. 7 is one of the most demanding chamber music works of the late Romantic period. The monograph by Hamburg musicologist Peter Petersen approaches the work from three directions: (1) themes and motifs are identified, whereby a theme unmentioned by the composer comes to light; (2) the course of the quartet movement is analyzed in terms of music dramaturgy, thus expanding the aspect of the four-movement structure in the single-movement structure; (3) the now well-known program of a love story, which Schönberg concealed, is examined in terms of its aesthetic relevance to the work as a whole – with the result that it only partially steered the course of the composition, but gave direction to the musical imagination.

As a consequence of this academic separation, scholars rarely take notice of connections between South Asian song and poetry. Modernizing Composition overcomes this disciplinary fragmentation by examining the history of Sinhala-language song and poetry in twentieth-century Sri Lanka. Garrett Field describes how songwriters and poets modernized song and poetry in response to colonial and postcolonial formations. The story of this modernization is significant in that it shifts focus from India's relationship to the West to little-studied connections between Sri Lanka and North India

    This groundbreaking collection explores the important ways Jesuits have employed rhetoric, the ancient art of persuasion and the current art of communications, from the sixteenth century to the present. Much of the history of how Jesuit traditions contributed to the development of rhetorical theory and pedagogy has been lost, effaced, or dispersed. As a result, those interested in Jesuit education and higher education in the United States, as well as scholars and teachers of rhetoric, are often unaware of this living 450-year-old tradition. Written by highly regarded scholars of rhetoric, composition, education, philosophy, and history, many based at Jesuit colleges and universities, the essays in this volume explore the tradition of Jesuit rhetorical education—that is, constructing "a more usable past" and a viable future for eloquentia perfecta, the Jesuits’ chief aim for the liberal arts. Intended to foster eloquence across the curriculum and into the world beyond, Jesuit rhetoric integrates intellectual rigor, broad knowledge, civic action, and spiritual discernment as the chief goals of the educational experience.Consummate scholars and rhetors, the early Jesuits employed all the intellectual and language arts as "contemplatives in action," preaching and undertaking missionary, educational, and charitable works in the world. The study, pedagogy, and practice of classical grammar and rhetoric, adapted to Christian humanism, naturally provided a central focus of this powerful educational system as part of the Jesuit commitment to the Ministries of the Word.     The fifteen essays of Performing History glimpse the diverse ways music historians "do" history, and the diverse ways in which music histories matter. This book’s chapters are structured into six key areas: historically informed performance; ethnomusicological perspectives; particular musical works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" war histories; operatic works that works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" power or enlightenment; musical works that deploy the body and a broad range of senses to convey histories; and histories involving popular music and performance. Diverse lines of evidence and manifold methodologies are represented here, ranging from traditional historical archival research to interviewing, performing, and composing. The modes of analyzing music and its associated texts represented here are as various as the kinds of evidence explored, including, for example, reading historical accounts against other contextual backdrops, and reading "between the lines" to access other voices than those provided by mainstream interpretation or traditional musicology

Geburtstag Arnold Schönberg!Arnold Schönbergs Streichquartett op. 7 gehört zu den anspruchsvollsten Kammermusikwerken der Spätromantik.Die Monographie des Hamburger Musikwissenschaftlers Peter Petersen geht das Werk aus drei Richtungen an: (1) Themen und Motive werden identifiziert, wobei ein vom Komponisten unerwähntes Thema ans Licht kommt; (2) der Verlauf des Quartettsatzes wird musikdramaturgisch analysiert und so der Aspekt der Viersätzigkeit in der Einsätzigkeit erweitert; (3) das von Schönberg verschwiegene, inzwischen bekannte Programm einer Liebesgeschichte wird in seiner ästhetischen Relevanz für das Werkganze untersucht – mit dem Ergebnis, dass es nur teilweise den Gang der Komposition gesteuert, der musikalischen Phantasie aber eine Richtung gegeben hat
