"Nettle’s book presents the results of five years of comparative ethnographic fieldwork in two different neighbourhoods of the same British city, Newcastle upon Tyne. The neighbourhoods are only a few kilometres apart, yet whilst one is relatively affluent, the other is amongst the most economically deprived in the UK. Tyneside Neighbourhoods uses multiple research methods to explore social relationships and social behaviour, attempting to understand whether the experience of deprivation fosters social solidarity, or undermines it. The book is distinctive in its development of novel quantitative methods for ethnography: systematic social observation, economic games, household surveys, crime statistics, and field experiments. Nettle analyses these findings in the context of the cultural, psychological and economic consequences of economic deprivation, and of the ethical difficulties of representing a deprived community. In so doing the book sheds light on one of the main issues of our time: the roles of culture and of socioeconomic factors in determining patterns of human social behaviour. Tyneside Neighbourhoods is a must read for scholars, students, individual readers, charities and government departments seeking insight into the social consequences of deprivation and inequality in the West.

The paper proposes some introductive observations for a comparative study of Jewish and Egyptian temple literature. An affinity between these traditions was already noted by Jewish-Hellenistic authors like Artapanus and Philo of Alexandria who spoke of a Moses instructed in Egyptian philosophy (that was, priestly lore and ideology). The book of Leviticus, in particular, offers many thematic and structural parallels to the Egyptian ritual literature. As a general, authoritative "manual of the Jerusalem Temple", the book of Leviticus can be compared with the Temple Manual, the collection of general rules and instructions on Egyptian temple liturgy to be published by Joaquim Quack. This research provides a comparative study of the Japanese and German nursing home sectors. Faced with aging populations, both countries share similar long-term care policies based on social insurance. However, descriptive statistics indicate significant differences in the outcomes and costs in their respective nursing home sectors. This research aims to identify the reasons for this state of affairs by examining demographic and policy differences between the two countries. To shed light on the subject from multiple angles, we conduct three types of empirical analysis - regression, the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition, and data envelopment analysis - on regional data from the past decade. Our findings indicate that the different outcomes are driven by both demographic and policy differences where policy relates to long-term care as well as to additional welfare aid. In terms of policy, a key difference is found in the designs of the welfare programs for low-income elders. In Germany, our results are consistent with moral hazard due to the generous design of the welfare program, while in Japan, our results do not indicate moral hazard, which may be due to strict nursing home admission rules for welfare recipients.

What distinguishes post-war governments that succeed in establishing a stable political order and prevent recurring conflict from those that do not? This comparative study considers the specific threats that typically lead to the collapse of the post-conflict political order to offer new hypotheses on the conditions that affect post-war governments' ability to sustainably restore stability. The threats considered include (i) fragmentation of the main actors in the conflict, (ii) inadequate demobilization, and (iii) enduring dependence of the post-war government on local brokers. Post-war regimes are more vulnerable to such risks after wars in which the dominant armed groups have established themselves by co-opting local power structures and drawing on existing socio-political networks, as this process redistributes power from the central to the local level. Empirically, this paper uses a novel dataset documenting the practices through which rebel groups may alter local power structures to highlight the connection between this wartime process of transformation and patterns of conflict recurrence. In addition, it contrasts the transition of the Tigray People's Liberation Front from rebellion to government in Ethiopia in the 1990s with the trajectory of the armed movements in Somalia that also overthrew the incumbent military regime but then failed to establish a viable state.

Digitalization has been identified as a primary aim for humanitarian organizations because it is rapidly altering the way humanitarian logistics and aid activities are implemented, directly affecting the way the humanitarian field supports those in need. Nonetheless, digital humanitarian tools are usually designed to meet the requirements of humanitarian aid agencies, not aid recipients, using top-down innovations, which creates a gap in aid beneficiary perspectives and experiences to enhance the utility of digital aid mechanisms. Using two NGO’s reports of beneficiary experiences, this paper compares the experiences of aid beneficiaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya using mobile money, and illustrates different effectiveness outcomes from the perspective of aid recipients.. This paper shows that the context in which mobile money is implemented according to four main factors identified in the literature - access to target populations, sustainability of programming, data protection, and ethical concerns in delivery - determines aid recipient experiences and views of mobile money effectiveness.
