    The overarching aim of the study is to investigate the key factors that determine how and how intensively countries can be integrated into the coffee global value chain (GVC) and thus can better reap the globalization benefits. The empirical analysis shows how the international trade in coffee has developed across regions/countries over the past three decades. It provides evidence-based insights into the key determinants of countries’ GVC integration in the coffee industry. It discusses countries’ functional and product upgrading for their GVC integration. Based on the empirical results obtained, policy implications are derived to support the further development of the coffee GVC. This study serves as a background study for the Coffee Development Report 2020 in preparation by the International Coffee Organisation.

    The objective of this study is to analyze issues related to international coffee certification and to verify the advantages of increasing certified production, from the point of view of access to markets and price differentiation. At first, information was created on world and national production, exports and main consumer markets for Brazilian coffee. Subsequently, the main certifications for coffee were discussed, highlighting the area (ha) and production (metric tons) certified and the main requirements for obtaining each certification. Finally, some issues were raised based on contacts with the market about the challenges and opportunities of certification for coffee in Brazil. In general, the results obtained allow us to conclude that certification brings several benefits to coffee producers. There is the direct benefit that is related to the price increase (premium price) and other indirect ones, such as adding value through measures that seek to mitigate environmental and social risks, improvement in the production structure, improvement in cost management, openness to international market, better quality of life, receiving technical assistance, adding value to the property by making adjustments to its infrastructure, among others. Some issues need to be raised for debate with regard to certifications, such as the cost of obtaining seals, the large number of certificates that may have the same objectives and that end up confusing the consumer, the competition between certifiers that may end up making the requirements to attract more producers and the involvement of certified farms in "greenwashing" and "bluewashing" practices.

    Increasing food demand will most likely be met with agricultural intensification and land clearing, exacerbating environmental consequences associated with food supply. The mechanisms and trade-offs between agriculture and the environment are heterogeneous and not well understood, yet key to enhance food production while safeguarding the environment, ensuring a dual purpose of food systems. This study examines the relationship between voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) and Rwandese coffee farmers' technical efficiency and productivity while exploring the mechanisms behind potential trade-offs and synergies between certification, productivity, and forest protection. Using cross-sectional farm-level data of 842 coffee farmers in Rwanda, we measure the effect of VSS on technical efficiency and an enhanced vegetation index (EVI) reflecting vegetation health and density around the farm. We combine a stochastic frontier analysis controlling for sample selection bias with mediation analysis. Our analysis shows that certified farmers exhibit greater technical efficiency levels than non-certified farmers. We can attribute this to better farm management, leading to 19% and 4% increases in their productivity and technical efficiency, respectively. Our analysis also suggests that certifications lead to higher enhanced vegetation index scores in and around the coffee plots, which we attribute to the regulatory mechanisms associated with certification. We conclude that VSS can enhance coffee production while safeguarding the environment and being a valuable component of a more comprehensive rural development program.
