    We study two dimensions of complexity that may interfere with individual choice. The first one is object complexity, which corresponds to the difficulty in evaluating any given alternative in a choice set. The second dimension is composition complexity, which increases when suboptimal alternatives become more similar to optimal ones. We develop a satisficing-with-evaluation-errors theory that incorporates both dimensions and delivers sharp empirical predictions about their effect on choice behavior. We confirm these predictions in a novel data set with information on hundreds of millions of decisions in chess endgames. First, as the object complexity of an optimal (suboptimal) alternative increases, it becomes less (more) likely to be chosen. Second, even highly experienced decision-makers are more likely to make mistakes when choosing from sets with higher composition complexity. These findings help to shed some of the first light on the effect of complexity on choice behavior outside of the laboratory.

    Abstract: Der Beitrag nimmt seinen Ausgang von Ingeborg Bachmanns Frankfurter Poetik- Vorlesungen (1959/60), in denen die Autorin unter anderem das Verhältnis von Geschichtlichkeit und Subjektivität diskutiert und nach Rollen und Funktionen der Namen literarischer Figuren in der Moderne fragt. Die nachfolgende Lektüre stellt in einem ersten Schritt die Bedeutungsabsicht, die mit Verleihung eines Namens bzw. Vornamens verknüpft ist, heraus und fragt nach möglichen Bedeutungen, die mit den Namen in der Erzählung Ein Wildermuth (1961) evoziert werden. In einem zweiten Schritt wird die Wahl des Namens mit der Logik einer existentiellen Wahl verglichen. In einem dritten Schritt wird die poetische Sprachfunktion, die laut Roman Jakobson eine Auswahl aus einem sprachlichen Paradigma erfordert, mit einer Dialektik von Zufälligkeit und Bedeutsamkeit konfrontiert, die sowohl die Namen in Bachmanns Erzählung als auch die Konstruktion ihrer Handlung charakterisieren. Abstract: This contribution takes the lectures on poetry delivered by the Austrian author Ingeborg Bachmann at the Goethe University Frankfurt in 1959/60 as a point of departure for an argument that conflates onomastic and poetological considerations with an analysis of the first and operative sentence in Bachmann’s story A Wildermuth. Bachmann’s lectures investigate the relationship between historicity and subjectivity, and discuss the role and function of names given to literary figures. The intended meaning that is inherent to giving first names to children is taken as the basis for an analysis of the names in Bachmann’s novella. In a second step, the choice of names is compared to the choices made in existential decisions. In a third step, the poetic function of language, as defined by Roman Jakobson, is related to the dialectic between contingency and meaningfulness which characterizes both the play with names in Bachmann’s novella and its plot.

    Freedom of choice is often thought to improve efficiency. We experimentally investigate the effect of giving workers a choice between compensation schemes with and without a CSR component (CSR/NoCSR) on labor market participation decision and work performance, compared to the alternative of exogenous assignment. Classical economic theory suggests that giving workers a choice should not reduce their performance. Our results show that there are hidden costs associated with the right of choice. When a worker is allowed to choose his or her compensation scheme, the labor market participation rate is significantly lower than when the same scheme is exogenously assigned. Work quality is also significantly lower for those who choose CSR, as well as for those who choose no CSR, than for those who are exogenously assigned to the same scheme.We propose a model of signaling with image concerns to explain why the freedom of choice may induce reduced participation and effort exertion of workers.
