    Kaum bekannt ist, dass die Brüder Jacob Grimm (1785–1883) und Wilhelm Grimm 1786–1859) schon seit frühester Kindheit intensiv gezeichnet haben. Der Band widmet sich ihren bisher unerforschten Kinder- und Jugendzeichnungen sowie denen ihrer Geschwister Carl, Charlotte, Ludwig Emil Grimm und deren Nachkommen. Es handelt sich um Skizzenbücher, Zeichenblätter und kleine Aquarelle, unter denen sich auch außergewöhnliche Naturstudien befinden. Einzelstudien machen diese bisher kaum erschlossenen Dokumente bürgerlicher Kinder- und Jugendkultur aus der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts in ihren Zusammenhängen zugänglich und erschließen zugleich die Archivbestände der Grimm-Sammlung der Stadt Kassel. Mit Beiträgen von Kunibert Bering | Marina Ebel | Larissa Eikermann | Anika Fernandez Gonzalo | Sonja Hanschke | Juliane Kurz | Anika Schedwiy | Jutta Ströter-Bender | Susanne Völker. It is hardly known that the brothers Jacob Grimm (1785–1883) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) drew intensively from their earliest childhood. This publication is devoted to their hitherto unexplored childhood and youth drawings as well as those of their siblings Carl, Charlotte, Ludwig Emil Grimm and their descendants. These are sketchbooks, drawing sheets and small watercolours, among which are also extraordinary studies of nature. Individual studies make these hitherto scarcely accessible documents of bourgeois children's and youth culture from the first half of the 19th century accessible in their contexts and at the same time open up the archival holdings of the Grimm Collection of the City of Kassel. In a sense, these early Soviet books for children were the ABCs of Soviet modernity. Creatively illustrated and intricately designed, they were manuals and primers that helped the young reader enter the field of politics through literature. Children’s books provided the basic vocabulary and grammar for understanding new, post-revolutionary realities, but they also taught young readers how to perceive modern events and communist practices. Relying on a process of dual-media rendering, illustrated books presented propaganda as a simple, repeatable narrative or verse, while also casting it in easily recognizable graphic images. A vehicle of ideology, an object of affection, and a product of labour, the illustrated book for the young Soviet reader emerged as an important cultural phenomenon. Communist in its content, it was often avant-gardist in its form. Spotlighting three thematic threads – communist goals, pedagogy, and propaganda – Pedagogy of Images traces the formation of a mass modern readership through the creation of the communist-inflected visual and narrative conventions that these early readers were supposed to appropriate

Children’s Versions of Beowulf: A Bibliography -- Index The single largest category of Beowulf representation and adaptation, outside of direct translation of the poem, is children’s literature. Over the past century and a half, more than 150 new versions of Beowulf directed to child and teen audiences have appeared, in English and in many other languages. In this collection of original essays, Bruce Gilchrist and Britt Mize examine the history and processes of remaking Beowulf for young readers. Inventive in their manipulations of story, tone, and genre, these adaptations require their authors to make countless decisions about what to include, exclude, emphasize, de-emphasize, and adjust. This volume considers the many forms of children’s literature, focusing primarily on picture books, illustrated storybooks, and youth novels, but taking account also of curricular aids, illustrated full translations of the poem, and songs. Contributors address issues of gender, historical context, war and violence, techniques of narration, education, and nationalism, investigating both the historical and theoretical dimensions of bringing Beowulf to child audiences

    The aim of this thesis is to explore how children's magic realist fiction contributes to critical Global Citizenship Education (GCE). This study argues that children's magic realist literature can facilitate young readers' knowledge and understanding of human rights issues and promote environmental awareness in a non-didactic manner by representing global issues from non-human perspectives. The thesis comprises four articles. The first study explores the non-human perspective of an animalhuman 'cyborg' protagonist in Peter Dickinson's novel Eva (1988). The study shows how the non-human perspective allows the reader to go beyond anthropocentric boundaries in order to explore the issue of treating the other. The second study investigates an animal perspective on the Roma genocide along with the mistreatment of animals in the Second World War in Sonya Hartnett's The Midnight Zoo (2010). The animal perspective shows human intolerance of other humans (the Roma) intertwined with human actions towards animals and encourages the reader in a non-didactic way to adopt an eco-philosophical standpoint. The third study is concerned with the representation of the Holocaust from the point of view of a supernatural narrator, Death, in Marcus Zusak's The Book Thief (2005). Death's inverted magic realist narrative facilitates the young reader's understanding of human rights issues and represents the history of the genocide in a non-didactic manner. The fourth study examines the relationships between humans and the natural environment shown from the non-human perspective of a tree. Taking the lens of holistic ecology, this study explores the representation of human - nature relationships in Patrick Ness's A Monster Calls (2011) and how the novel guides the child-reader towards an awareness of environmental issues
