    From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable "stuff," has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity.Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of "character" in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body

    Dreaming with Open Eyes examines visual symbolism in late seventeenth-century Italian opera, contextualizing the genre amid the broad ocularcentric debates emerging at the crossroads of the early modern period and the Enlightenment. Ayana O. Smith reevaluates significant aspects of the Arcadian reform aesthetic and establishes a historically informed method of opera criticism for modern scholars and interpreters. Unfolding in a narrative fashion, the text explores facets of the philosophical and literary background and concludes with close readings of text and music, using visual symbolism to create readings of gender and character in two operas: Alessandro Scarlatti's La Statira (Rome, 1690), and Carlo Francesco Pollarolo's La forza della virtù (Venice, 1693).     This article argues that the principal background against which the clothing metaphor in Eph 4:22, 24 would have been understood by the letter's original hearers is that of the theater, within which changes of costume signalled changes of identity, character, or fate. After a brief survey of recent scholarly commentaries (which pay surprisingly little attention to the possibility of a theatrical background to the metaphor in these verses) it highlights instances of similar expressions within Greco-Roman theatrical contexts, both literal and metaphorical, discusses the relevant aspects of ancient dramatic theory and practice, and explores the implications of this reading for theological interpretation of Ephesians.

    Corporate Romanticism offers an alternative history of the connections between modernity, individualism, and the novel. In early nineteenth-century England, two developments—the rise of corporate persons and the expanded scale of industrial action—undermined the basic assumption underpinning both liberalism and the law: that individual human persons can be meaningfully correlated with specific actions and particular effects. Reading works by Godwin, Austen, Hogg, Mary Shelley, and Dickens alongside a wide-ranging set of debates in nineteenth-century law and Romantic politics and aesthetics, Daniel Stout argues that the novel, a literary form long understood as a reflection of individualism’s ideological ascent, in fact registered the fragile fictionality of accountable individuals in a period defined by corporate actors and expansively entangled fields of action.Examining how liberalism, the law, and the novel all wrestled with the moral implications of a highly collectivized and densely packed modernity, Corporate Romanticism reconfigures our sense of the nineteenth century and its novels, arguing that we see in them not simply the apotheosis of laissez-fair individualism but the first chapter of a crucial and distinctly modern problem about how to fit the individualist and humanist terms of justice onto a world in which the most consequential agents are no longer persons

    Die Studie präsentiert neue wegweisende Erkenntnisse zur Produktion, Rezeption und Revision von Broadway-Dramen der Progressive Era (1890-1920) im Spannungsfeld konfligierender Geschlechterdiskurse mit dem Ziel, den immer noch üblichen negativen Pauschalbewertungen des Phänomens Broadway eine differenziertere Betrachtungsweise entgegenzusetzen. Die Progressive Era war eine Zeit rapiden gesellschaftlichen Wandels, geprägt durch ein spannungsvolles Gegeneinander von progressiven und konservativen Tendenzen, nicht zuletzt auch in Fragen der Geschlechterbeziehungen. Dieses Thema wurde auch in zahlreichen Stücken des zeitgenössischen Broadway-Theaters aufgegriffen, dessen rigides Regelkorsett jedoch kaum Spielraum für eine Behandlung der Thematik jenseits des vorgegebenen Konventionsrahmens ließ. Es gab allerdings vereinzelte Versuche, die ästhetischen und ideologischen Grenzen dieses Rahmens zu überwinden. Auf diesen bislang kaum beachteten Aspekt richtet sich das spezifische Erkenntnisinteresse der vorliegenden Arbeit. An einer Reihe von ausführlichen Text-Kontext-Analysen ausgewählter Stücke demonstriert sie die Strategien, mit denen die betreffenden Autor(inn)en in einem subtilen Wechselspiel von Anpassung und Subversion ihre geschlechterpolitische Reformagenda gegen die Restriktionen des Kommerztheaters verteidigen und dabei auch im ästhetischen Bereich zu durchaus beachtlichen Leistungen fähig sind, und zeigt so, dass auch in dieser populärkulturellen Theaterform ein größeres Innovations- und Subversionspotential virulent war als ihr in der bisherigen Forschung gemeinhin zugesprochen wird

The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma.     Im Zuge von Kanonisierungstendenzen wird 'der Artusroman' heute gerne auf die Werke Chrétiens und weniger anderer 'Klassiker' begrenzt, abgesehen von einzelnen Texten, die zyklisch von der Forschung wiederentdeckt werden. Zu einem modernen 'Mythos' konnten Artus und der Artusstoff aber nur werden, weil die Artustradition über Jahrhunderte hinweg hoch aktiv weiterlebte und die Texte immer wieder neu rezipiert, transformiert, umgeschrieben und der aktuellen Zeit angepasst wurden. So entstand eine Fülle von arthurischen Texten und Artusnotationen. Während bislang zumeist die Erforschung der Artusrezeption im 19./20. Jahrhundert und mediävistische Untersuchungen zur mittelalterlichen Réécriture unverbunden nebeneinander standen, nimmt dieser Band beides in den Blick. Als Bindeglied dient die in der Forschung oft ausgeblendete Artusrezeption in der Frühen Neuzeit. Unter den Schlagwörtern 'réécriture' und 'Rezeption' werden Prozesse der Übertragung, Bearbeitung und Fortschreibung einzelner Romane sowie verschiedene Formen der Rezeption einzelner Figuren, Motive oder Erzählschemata, aber auch ganzer Romane analysiert und historisch kontextualisiert, um zu erklären, was Artus zu einem 'Mythos' macht King Arthur could only develop into a modern "myth" because the Arthurian literature created in the High Middle Ages was continuously recreated over the centuries.
