    Sustainable finance taxonomies can play an important role in scaling up sustainable finance and, in turn, in supporting the achievement of high-level goals such as the Paris Accord and the UN sustainable development goals. This paper develops a framework to classify and compare existing taxonomies. Several weaknesses emerge from this classification and comparison, including the lack of usage of relevant and measurable sustainability performance indicators, a lack of granularity and lack of verification of achieved sustainability benefits. On this basis, the paper proposes key principles for the design of effective taxonomies. The principles are then employed to develop a simple framework for transition taxonomies. The key policy messages of the analysis are: (i) Endeavor that taxonomies correspond to specific sustainability objectives; (ii) Encourage the development of transition taxonomies and focus alignment with the objectives of the Paris Agreement; (iii) Monitor and supervise the evolution of certification and verification processes; and (iv) Shift to mandatory impact reporting for green bonds.

    In models of certification possible restrictions on the nature of the fee structures are commonly analyzed. We show that they are irrelevant for the certifier's ability to maximize profits and trade efficiency. Our results establish that certification schemes involve two substitutable dimensions-the fee structure and the disclosure rule. In the context of a canonical unit good certification setup, these dimensions act as perfect substitutes for achieving trade efficiency and (monotone) distributions of rents; adjustments in the disclosure dimension can fully mitigate restrictions in the fee dimension, but these changes do affect market transparency.

    The objective of this study is to analyze issues related to international coffee certification and to verify the advantages of increasing certified production, from the point of view of access to markets and price differentiation. At first, information was created on world and national production, exports and main consumer markets for Brazilian coffee. Subsequently, the main certifications for coffee were discussed, highlighting the area (ha) and production (metric tons) certified and the main requirements for obtaining each certification. Finally, some issues were raised based on contacts with the market about the challenges and opportunities of certification for coffee in Brazil. In general, the results obtained allow us to conclude that certification brings several benefits to coffee producers. There is the direct benefit that is related to the price increase (premium price) and other indirect ones, such as adding value through measures that seek to mitigate environmental and social risks, improvement in the production structure, improvement in cost management, openness to international market, better quality of life, receiving technical assistance, adding value to the property by making adjustments to its infrastructure, among others. Some issues need to be raised for debate with regard to certifications, such as the cost of obtaining seals, the large number of certificates that may have the same objectives and that end up confusing the consumer, the competition between certifiers that may end up making the requirements to attract more producers and the involvement of certified farms in "greenwashing" and "bluewashing" practices.

    This study analyzed the dynamics of the Brazilian soybean production chain, with the aim of understanding the position of producers/exporters in the sector in terms of production, foreign markets and the environment. In addition, the soy certification process through adherence to the voluntary sustainability standards (NVS) and the relevance of this new form of market regulation were added to the discussion. A bibliographic review was carried out on the subject, starting with the mapping of the Brazilian soybean production chain and Brazil's position in the international scenario, relating the role of certifications in managing the effects of production on the environment. For this second stage, relevant information was collected from producers, exporters and companies that certify Brazilian soy. It should be noted that only two certifications stand out in this production chain, ProTerra and mainly the Round Table Responsible Soy (RTRS). The results show the importance of creating the Soy Moratorium in Brazil, which focuses on the preservation of the Amazon, reflected by the commitment not to sell or finance soy produced in deforested areas in this region. With regard to certification, interviews with producers, certifiers and associations showed that these agents are aware of the need to adopt certificates and the diversity of options available on the market. In addition, they elucidate the importance of having certification, both for environmental preservation and for accessing the most demanding markets, such as the European Union, thereby obtaining a higher price for your product.

    Restrictions on certifiers' fee structures are irrelevant for maximizing their profits and trade efficiency, and for the implementability of (monotone) distributions of rents. The irrelevance results exploit that certification schemes involve two substitutable dimensions-the fee structure and the disclosure rule-and adaptations in the disclosure dimension can mitigate restrictions on the fee dimension. While restrictions on fee structures do affect market transparency, it has no impact on economic efficiency or rent distributions.

    The objective of this study is to verify the advantages and challenges of increasing certified cotton production and to analyze whether meeting the certification requirements guarantees Brazil access to the world market. As a way of answering these questions, data on the cotton production chain are initially presented, highlighting production costs, world and national production and, finally, the commercialization of cotton (exports and domestic market). Subsequently, we sought to gather information on requirements and steps for the certification of Responsible Brazilian Cotton (ABR) and the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). In the last phase of the research, the results obtained from contact with producers and the association of cotton producers were presented, which highlighted costs, difficulties and benefits (direct and indirect) of certification. The results obtained indicate that even without certification access to international markets is not compromised. This can be explained by the fact that the main buyers, especially Asians, still have little demand for the certified product. But what is expected is a growth trend in the coming years for Brazilian cotton with sustainability standards. On the other hand, the organization of farms, both in terms of improving rural buildings as well as attention to labor and environmental legislation, which are fundamental for receiving the ABR and BCI seal, work as a good tool to improve property management. .From the results found, it is evident that the development of a national seal, the ABR, and the benchmarking with the BCI make cotton production a successful example to be followed by the other sectors in terms of certification.
