    Through a comparion of etnographic research in the UK and Brazil, this chapter has examined now changing scientific and medical understandings regarding the origin, genealogical history and patrimony of the so-called Ashkenazi mutations have been diversely taken up and put to use in clinical/research contexts. It has explored the very differing differing differing consequences this can have for the way health care practitioners, scientists, patients and their families engage with and incorporate knowledge about hereditary BRCA mutations into scientific narratives, clinical practices and understandings of clinical/familial risk and identity.

    This article investigates how the Swedish population values a reduction in the number of suicides in relation to other life-saving interventions within the health care sector. An online discrete choice experiment was conducted with a sample of 1000 Swedish members of the web panel Userneeds to elicit the relative importance placed on reducing the number of suicides in comparison to deaths due to pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, and acute heart attack. The choice set consisted of three attributes: number of lives saved, cause of death, and age group affected. We found that respondents valued saving lives by suicide prevention lower than saving lives from pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, or acute heart attack.

    We investigate the effects of radiation therapy on the mortality and economic outcomes of breast cancer patients. We implement a 2SLS strategy within a difference-in-difference framework exploiting variation in treatment stemming from a medical guideline change in Denmark. Using administrative data, we reproduce results from an RCT showing the lifesaving benefits of radiotherapy. We then show therapy also has economic returns: ten years after diagnosis, treatment increases employment by 37% and earnings by 45%. Mortality and economic results are driven by results for more educated women, indicating that equalizing access to treatment may not be sufficient to reduce health inequalities.

    Breast cancer is the most prevalent female cancer in the US. Incidence rates are similar for white and black women, but mortality rates are higher for black women. Scant evidence exists on how heath care reform policies differentially affect the use of health care services among racial/ethnic minority breast cancer survivors in the US. This study draws on rich, nationally representative data, the 2008-2015 Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys, to estimate effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on reducing disparities in and access to use of diagnostic and medical services for black and Hispanic breast cancer survivors. Random effects multinomial logit, flexible hurdle, and Box-Cox estimation techniques are used. The robust estimates indicate that the ACA narrowed the racial/ethnic disparity in health insurance among breast cancer survivors. Gaps in mammography use significantly declined post-ACA for Hispanic breast cancer survivors compared with white and black survivors. The ACA did not significantly impact disparities in physician utilization. Out-of-pocket prescription drug expenditures declined, narrowing the gap for black and Hispanic survivors. The paper concludes with a discussion of the strengths and limitations of the ACA for reducing disparities and improving health outcomes for a growing population of breast cancer survivors in the US.
