    In Paris in the Dark Eric Smoodin takes readers on a journey through the streets, cinemas, and theaters of Paris to sketch a comprehensive picture of French film culture during the 1930s and 1940s. Drawing on a wealth of journalistic sources, Smoodin recounts the ways films moved through the city, the favored stars, and what it was like to go to the movies in a city with hundreds of cinemas. In a single week in the early 1930s, moviegoers might see Hollywood features like King Kong and Frankenstein, the new Marlene Dietrich and Maurice Chevalier movies, and any number of films from Italy, Germany, and Russia. Or they could frequent the city's ciné-clubs, which were hosts to the cinéphile subcultures of Paris. At other times, a night at the movies might result in an evening of fascist violence, even before the German Occupation of Paris, while after the war the city's cinemas formed the space for reconsolidating French film culture. In mapping the cinematic geography of Paris, Smoodin expands understandings of local film exhibition and the relationships of movies to urban space.

    The Psalms were composed for oral performance, and many today believe they should be restored to their performance vitality. “Translation for performance” requires many concepts to be considered, one of which is how the audience (or receptor community) will use the translated text. In the case of translating poetry, these considerations often point to the value of literary-rhetorical translation, which captures the poetical beauty and persuasive power of the original. Also, translating from an oral text and following the form of local poetic genres facilitates ready application of psalms. In this paper, empirical studies illustrate some ways in which psalms have been used recently with communities in South Africa: in corporate worship, in personal prayer, and with sectoral groups. Translators need constantly to keep their eye on the end game, to ensure the translated psalms facilitate a living conversation between people and God, as the ancient poems did.

    Auf der Grundlage von Gérard Genettes »Narrative Discourse« untersucht dieser Artikel den Text des Evangeliums nach Markus auf Prolepsen, die sich durch die Verwendung des Futurs Indikativ auszeichnen. Mithilfe des voraussagenden Futurs wird das Verhältnis von erzähltem Text und erzählter Welt bzw. die Reihenfolge der dargestellten und der vorgestellten Geschehnisse untersucht. Der Erzähler schafft bewusst Anachronismen, Spannungen und Erwartungen aufseiten seiner Hörer und Hörerinnen und überträgt seinem Hauptcharakter Jesus eine besondere Rolle, indem er ihm fast ausnahmslos diese Prolepsen in den Mund legt. Die Frage, ob der Erzähler das Geschehen des durch Jesus Vorausgesagten auch erzählt, eröffnet nicht nur einen Blick auf seine Fähigkeiten als Erzähler zu, sondern hat auch wichtige theologische Implikationen. Auslieferung, Verleugnung, Passion, Hinrichtung und Auferstehung Jesu werden von diesem selbst angekündigt und ihr Eintreten im Verlauf des Evangeliums erzählt. Seine angekündigte Erscheinung, die Drangsal der Jünger, ihr Leiden im Rahmen der Verkündigung des Evangeliums und die Zerstörung des Tempels fehlen jedoch. Wird das Eintreten dieser Ereignisse aber vom Erzähler vorausgesetzt? Lassen sie sich in der Zeit der Erzählung verorten? Was bedeutet es, dass der Erzähler das Wissen über die kommende Zeit nicht selbst mitteilt, sondern nur von Jesus voraussagen lässt?
