    "Sheffield Castle presents an original perspective on an urban castle, resurrecting from museum archives a building that once made Sheffield a nexus of power in medieval England, its lords playing important roles in local, national, and international affairs. Although largely demolished at the end of the English Civil War, the castle has left an enduring sway over the present townscape, and future development, of Sheffield.

    In this volume, we rediscover the medieval castle, explore its afterlife, and discuss its legacy for the regeneration of Sheffield into the twenty-first century. The authors bring to publication for the first time all the major excavations on the site, present the first modern study of artefacts excavated in the mid-twentieth century, and situate both in the context of the published and unpublished documentary record. They also tell the stories of those responsible for re-discovering the castle, the circumstances in which they were working, their archaeological methods, and the scholarly and political influences that shaped their narratives.

    In setting the study within the context of urban

    regeneration, Sheffield Castle differs from most publications of medieval castles. This regeneration narrative is both historical, addressing the ways in which successive building campaigns have encountered the castle remains, and current, as the future of the site is under active discussion following the demolition of the market hall built on the site in the 1960s. The book explores how the former existence of the castle, and the landscape in which it sat, including its deer park, have shaped the development of the ‘Steel City’. We see that the untapped heritage of the site has considerable value for the regeneration of what may now be one of the most deprived areas of Sheffield, but was once at its social, political and cultural heart.

    Prof John Moreland (University of Sheffield) and Prof Dawn Hadley (now University of York) led the University of Sheffield’s Sheffield Castle project, and worked with colleagues from Wessex Archaeology, Museums Sheffield and the contributors named below. This volume, written with Ashley Tuck and Milica Rajic from Wessex Archaeology, presents the culmination of the findings of this project and is, importantly, accompanied by a digital archive, making all the research materials publicly available.

As digital humanities has expanded in scope and content, questions of how to negotiate the overlapping influences of race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, and other dimensions that shape data, archives, and methodologies have come to the fore. Taking up these concerns, the authors in this volume explore their effects on the methodological, political, and ethical practices of digital humanities. Essays examine intersectionality from a range of positions: the influence of overlapping identities on scholars within the digital humanities community; how the fields in which they work are subject to competing tensions created by intersecting power structures within digital humanities and academia; and the methodological possibilities and scholarly potential for intersectionality as a framing theory in digital humanities scholarship

    This book sprang from three handwritten lines by Ivan Bunin, Russia's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Found inside a first edition of Mitya's Love, they led to the discovery of one of the largest corpora of letters written to Ivan and Vera Bunin by two people whose lives and legacy had been, until now, forgotten. These letters are now in the Russian Archive in Leeds (RAL), and are published here for the first time. The book also focuses on memory and history in its purest form, as narrated by witnesses who lived through the most tragic century in Russian history. Their stories involve Grand Dukes, Russian literary and political giants, as well as one of the architects of the Gulag, and show how these lives intertwined. It also sheds new light on the life and works of Chekhov, Gorky, A. Tolstoy, and Bunin

    Der Tagungsband geht von der Beobachtung aus, dass der Raum in der Vormoderne nicht nur textuell beschrieben, sondern auch mit performativen Praktiken in Augenschein genommen und abgebildet wurde. Bei den Abbildungen handelt es sich um Visualisierungen des beanspruchten Raums, anschaulich gemachte Inaugenscheinnahmen und bildlich dargestellte Augenzeugenschaft. Wie wurden rechtliche Verhältnisse kartographiert? Diese zentrale Frage hat eine europäische Perspektive, die uns nach Entwicklungen und Einflüssen fragen lässt. Die Untersuchung gilt einerseits den Objekten der Raumdarstellung – wie Karten, Gemälden und Skizzen – andererseits den mit ihnen sich verbindenden performativen Praktiken. Der Band enthält eine englische Übersetzung der Einleitung und einen Ausblick in die zukünftige Dokumentation von historischen Karten In the pre-modern era, spatial relationships were not only described textually, but also depicted with performative practices. The conference volume (which contains an English introduction) deals with how legal rights were asserted through visual presentations or pictorially depicted in eyewitness accounts. How were legal relationships viewed, and what role did law play in cartography?

    Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in the late 1980s, intersectionality makes the case that dimensions of identity, such as gender and race, cannot be understood in isolation from each other because they work together to shape lived experience. As digital humanities has expanded in scope and content, questions of how to negotiate the overlapping influences of race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, and other dimensions that shape data, archives, and methodologies have come to the fore. Taking up these concerns, the authors in this volume explore their effects on the methodological, political, and ethical practices of digital humanities. Essays examine intersectionality from a range of positions: the influence of overlapping identities on scholars within the digital humanities community; how the fields in which they work are subject to competing tensions created by intersecting power structures within digital humanities and academia; and the methodological possibilities and scholarly potential for intersectionality as a framing theory in digital humanities scholarship

    This special issue offers a capacious sample of scholarship on religion and material texts in the Americas, and seeks to reveal the potential of material-texts approaches for the study of religion. It features articles by four early-career Americanists (Emily Floyd, Alexandra Kaloyanides, Roxanne Korpan, and Martin Tsang) whose research bridges both areas. Because material texts research typically relies on archives for its source base, I asked the authors of the “In Conversation” essays (Matthew P. Brown, Steffi Dippold, Kyle Roberts, and Judith Weisenfeld) to discuss what they see as the challenges and opportunities confronting archival research in material texts today. While the collected eight pieces reflect the diversity and originality of their authors, they make several collective contributions. They demonstrate how material texts mediate power, especially amid encounters involving state, colonial, and missionary actors; exemplify the strength of interpretations informed by hands-on encounters with material texts; display a critical alertness to the structures through which material texts have been collected and made legible to researchers today; and show what we stand to gain from collaborative scholarship

    This Forum includes seven articles by scholars working in the field of Moravian Studies reflecting on their work with “Digital Moravians,” either in their scholarship or in the classroom. The articles cover everything from the nature the archivist’s work in a digital age (Paul Peucker), to the painstaking work of georectification and historic sound reproduction (Mark Sciuchetti and Sarah Eyerly, respectively), to new forms of scholarly editions of archival materials as open and public facing scholarship announced on social media (Martin Prell), to the use of digital manuscripts to invite history undergraduates behind the curtain to actively participate in the work of the historian (Jared Burkholder). Additional articles consider the challenges of digital humanities work for the growing ranks of precarious scholars who lack institutional support for the types of collaborative work required (Gregory Specter) and the innovative technical digital humanities scholarship possible when a scholar is backed by an institution committed to supporting and showcasing digital scholarship and pedagogy (Katherine Faull at Bucknell University). From the 1950s to the present day, different approaches have been taken and the aims of research studies have changed considerably. Besides methodological textbooks, which aim at advancing archaeological knowledge, historians of archaeology have tackled this question by exploring the development of archaeology as a scientific discipline. More recently, collaborations between archaeologists and other scientists have been examined as a general phenomenon regarding transfers of knowledge and power relationships between specialists, organizations, and scientific tools, where archaeology is considered as a scientific practice.     Today, digitization projects in the Humanities require the implementation of larger, supraregional solutions. The contributions in this volume were presented at the conference of the Hamburg State Archives and the Center for the Humanities in the Digital World at the University of Hamburg on April 10 and 11, 2006. They make an interdisciplinary contribution to the required standardisation of corresponding services which can only facilitate the urgently needed exchange of information and make it possible to share structured data.

    How do museums and cinema shape the image of the Communist past in today's Central and Eastern Europe? This volume is the first systematic analysis of how visual techniques are used to understand and put into context the former regimes. After history "ended" in the Eastern Bloc in 1989, museums and other memorials mushroomed all over the region. These efforts tried both to explain the meaning of this lost history, as well as to shape public opinion on their society's shared post-war heritage. Museums and films made political use of recollections of the recent past, and employed selected museum, memorial, and media tools and tactics to make its political intent historically credible. Thirteen essays from scholars around the region take a fresh look at the subject as they address the strategies of fashioning popular perceptions of the recent past. "Books on the CEE transformations that deal with media and popular cultures should be welcomed. Past for the Eyes belongs to this extraordinary breed. The book is devoted to the visual representations of the socialist / communist past and the forms they took. The interconnected processes of visualization of the past, and the collective memory sedimentation are the main focus. The book brings together perspectives of linked but still distinctive ways of enquiry: visual studies, cultural studies, area studies, museum studies and contemporary history with its passion for ethnography and oral evidence.

    This Special Issue of Arts investigates the use of digital methods in the study of art markets and their histories. As historical and contemporary data is rapidly becoming more available, and digital technologies are becoming integral to research in the humanities and social sciences, we sought to bring together contributions that reflect on the different strategies that art market scholars employ to navigate and negotiate digital techniques and resources. The essays in this issue cover a wide range of topics and research questions. Taken together, the essays offer a reflection on what takes to research art markets, which includes addressing difficult topics such as the nature of the research questions and the data available to us, and the conceptual aspects of art markets, in order to define and operationalize variables and to interpret visual and statistical patterns for scholarship. In our view, this discussion is enriched when also taking into account how to use shared or interoperable ontologies and vocabularies to define concepts and relationships that facilitate the use and exchange of linked (open) data for cultural heritage and historical research.
