    Tony Conrad (b. 1940) has been a well-known American artist for more than 50 years. Celebrated as a musician, filmmaker, video and performance artist, he achieved his breakthrough in 1966 with the experimental film The Flicker. In addition to his film work (including the so called Yellow Movies), his violin performances have also achieved broad recognition. This monograph focuses on about 70 video works produced by the artist since 1977, which previously have not been systematically studied. Beginning from Conrad’s earlier rather materialistic approach, in A videographic view of the artist’s vita the text follows the artists shift from experimental film to a more image-driven videographic approach. The chapter Last call for video comments on Tony Conrad influential interaction with the Buffalo-based group of appropriation artists. Then Video as critique of television interrogates the interplay between (video) art and society as a reflection of the telematic culture of the 1980s. The last chapter, Video in tension with music, returns to the beginning of the artist’s career and comments on Tony Conrad’s identity as a musician. Die Monografie untersucht das Video-Œuvre des Künstlers Tony Conrad und kontextualisiert es im historischen Umfeld der 1980er Jahre. Die Videoarbeiten und Referenzmaterialien werden kunsthistorisch analysiert, strukturiert und als Quelle gesichert. Die Gegenüberstellung mit Werken anderer Künstler ermöglicht eine Verortung im diskursiven Feld.

    Yunte Huang takes a most original "ethnographic" approach to more and less well-known American texts as he traces what he calls the transpacific displacement of cultural meanings through twentieth-century America's imaging of Asia.Informed by the politics of linguistic appropriation and disappropriation, Transpacific Displacement opens with a radically new reading of Imagism through the work of Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell. Huang relates Imagism to earlier linguistic ethnographies of Asia and to racist representations of Asians in American pop culture, such as the book and movie character Charlie Chan, then shows that Asian American writers subject both literary Orientalism and racial stereotyping to double ventriloquism and countermockery. Going on to offer a provocative critique of some textually and culturally homogenizing tendencies exemplified in Maxine Hong Kingston's work and its reception, Huang ends with a study of American translations of contemporary Chinese poetry, which he views as new ethnographies that maintain linguistic and cultural boundaries

    Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Southern California, this paper explores how non-Indians use and appropriate statues of Hindu deities. In particular, I focus on a particular group of spiritual seekers who see these statues, or murtis, not as manifestations of the divine - that is, not as Hindu gods themselves - but instead as symbols that correspond to Jungian "archetypes." This spiritual practice of "working with" an archetype is quite different from what one might encounter in a Hindu temple in India, and indeed, the underlying theologies of the practice map better onto American metaphysical religion than they do Hinduism. The article ends with a reflection on appropriation, focusing on the ways in which this spiritual practice promotes a form of universalism in which the very idea of appropriation becomes impossible.

    Postcolonialism, profoundly influenced by the Palestinian scholar Edward Said, has until recently been oddly silent on Palestine, a topic that not only preoccupied Said's thinking and writing, but also inspired his theoretical ideas on imperialism, anti-colonial struggle and the worldliness and affiliations of the text and the critic. This theoretical silence on Palestine was, in fact, preceded by a historical, political, geographical, social and cultural contestation of all forms of Palestinian spaces that include not only dispossessing Palestinians of their land, but also building apartheid walls, destroying hundreds of thousands of olive trees, appropriating/stealing traditional Palestinian dishes and clothes, silencing Palestinian narratives and the Muslim call to prayer. This paper will argue that these contested spaces necessarily become sites of Palestinian cultural production, struggle and sumud.
