    Although the study of the Bible was central to early Humanities Computing efforts, now Biblical Studies and Religious Studies are marginal disciplines in the emerging field known as Digital Humanities (English, History, Library Science, for example, are much more influential in DH.) This paper explores two questions: First, what does it mean for Biblical Studies to be marginal to the Digital Humanities when DH is increasingly seen as the locus of as transformation in the humanities? Second, how can our expertise in Biblical Studies influence and shape Digital Humanities for the better? Digital Humanities, I argue, constitutes a powerful emerging field with which Biblical Studies and Religious Studies must engage as critical participants or analysts. Moreover, our own field’s expertise on the history of canon, orthodoxy, and commentary can contribute to shaping a more inclusive and self-critical Digital Humanities.

    Abstract: Digital Thoreau is a web resource comprising three digital projects related to the work of Henry David Thoreau created at SUNY Geneseo. The first of these is a fluid text edition of Thoreau’s most famous work Walden. This allows multiple versions of the text to be represented simultaneously in a dynamic environment, which can be a valuable resource to Thoreau scholars, particularly for those interested in researching the genetic aspect of the text. In the second project a very innovative and engaging social reading platform has been created in order to facilitate community and student driven annotation of both Walden and his 1849 essay Resistance to Civil Government. The third project is a student created digital archive of the papers of Thoreau scholar Walter Harding, which is primarily a pedagogical exercise in digital humanities for the students of SUNY Geneseo.     Abstract: The William Blake Archive (WBA) attempts to remediate digitally William Blake’s entire corpus of poetic and artistic artifacts. The resulting website exhibits high-fidelity images of his surviving prints, plates, drawings, and canvases that would otherwise remain isolated in difficult-to-access collections around the world. Using an editorial strategy that focuses on the physical object, the WBA successfully individuates physical copies of Blake’s work by supplementing each digital facsimile with unique bibliographic information, editorial commentary, and viewing tools that help users investigate the object’s unique material nature. Functionally, the site would greatly benefit from updates to its user interface and key applet (the Virtual Light Box). Through this update, described as ‘a complete and transformative redesign,’ all of the content of the previous site has been retained, with improvements to the overall aesthetic appeal and functionality. These functionality updates principally consist of a modernized navigation system; a redesigned Object View page that organizes WBA’s scholarly tools within a matrix of panels; and a more comprehensive archival search engine. These new features provide users with enhanced opportunities for interacting with the objects contained in the archive.     Abstract: How does Digital Mappa, a browser-based annotation tool, fit into the current landscape of Virtual Research Environments? How is an intuitive WYSIWYG graphical user interface suited for simple (scholarly) editions and image-text representations? What about involving different users via crowdsourcing? For this review, we took three distinct perspectives (user, teacher, and backend admin) and tested the tool for text annotation but furthermore for linking images with text. Digital Mappa proves to be a stable, not-so-easy-to-set-up tool that covers a lot of ground concerning annotation and image linking. Subsuming, we describe a mature system that allows for easy editing, suitable in the classroom. Critically, it has been assessed that the tool refrains from standards (such as TEI XML) and lacks capabilities to involve larger groups (e.g. for crowdsourcing)

    Abstract: Despite the flexibility that a TEI-based workflow offers for preparing editions based on collating several manuscripts, textual scholars working with XML-TEI edition files face a lack of domain-specific auxiliary tools. The TEI-CAT partially fills this gap by providing interfaces for visualizing the transcription of different manuscripts and for exploring the encoded variations and detecting common mistakes. While not properly supporting several types of textual variation and editorial intervention, these tools satisfy most of the needs usually arising during transcription and collation. The image annotation tool complements them by allowing users to generate TEI-compliant code. This tool very flexibly describes or comments on facsimile layout and content and thus is particularly helpful in preparing digital editions.
