    Among our most cherished modern assumptions is our distance from the material world we claim to love or, alternately, to dominate and own. As both devotional tool and art object, the Byzantine icon is rendered complicit in this distancing. According to well-established theological and scholarly explanations, the icon is a window onto the divine: it focuses and directs our minds to a higher understanding of God and saints. Despite their material richness, icons are understood to efface their own materiality, thereby enabling us to do the same. That the privileged relation of image to God is based on its capacity for material self-effacement is the basis for all theology of the icon and all art-historical description. It gets more complicated than this definition, to be sure, but the icon is positioned in this way in most straightforward accounts, whether devotional or scholarly. My position is to undermine the transcendentalizing determination of modern theology and aesthetics, and to lean very heavily on the materiality of these things to the point of allowing them, to the degree I can, a voice and life of their own.

    Die Methodologie der Methode einer strukturalistischen Hermeneutik deckt den Kern des ökonomischen Codes der Mainstream-Wirtschaftslehre (als Gewebestruktur von Bi-Polaritäten) als spezifische Phänomenologie von Herr und Knecht dechiffrierend auf. Der im Geld ermöglichte Tausch ist die Schaffung der Dependenzgrammatik einer Funktionsinterdependenz, die über die Vertragsform negativer Freiheit mit dem Risiko psychodynamischer und kulturgrammatischer Verstiegenheiten in narzisstischer und manischer Richtung und in Form eines kollektiv geteilten Wahns nicht hinauskommt. Nicht nur der Kapitalismus als Realität ist eine Religion der liturgischen Ordnung des Animismus und Fetischismus, auch die ökonomische Theorie des Kapitalismus ist von Theologemen signiert. The methodology of the method of a structuralist hermeneutics uncovers the core of the economic code of mainstream economic theory (as a structure of relations of bi-polarities) as a specific phenomenology of master and servant. The exchange, made possible in money, is the creation of the dependency grammar of a functional interdependence that does not go beyond the contractual form of negative freedom with the risk of psychodynamic and cultural-grammatical neuroses in narcissistic and manic directions and in the form of a collectively shared delusion. Not only capitalism as a reality is a religion of liturgical order of animism and fetishism, also the economic theory of capitalism is signed by theologems.
