    "Alison Horbury investigates the reprisal of the myth of Persephone - a mother-daughter plot of separation and initiation - in post-feminist television cultures where, she argues, it functions as a symptom expressing a complex around the question of sexual difference - what Lacan calls 'sexuation', where this question has been otherwise foreclosed. She takes four television heroines dramatizing this Persephone symptom - Ally McBeal, Sydney Bristow, Veronica Mars, and Meredith Grey - to show what is unconscious in this symptom, and identifies an impasse in feminist cultural criticisms as they respond to post-feminist cultures where ideas about feminine sexuation conflict with poststructuralist thought on the topic of 'woman'. She introduces psychoanalytic approaches to the novel to rethink the engagement of audiences with long-form serial narrative, and suggests that post-feminist discourses manifesting in Persephone's story offer us a cultural symptom that, when analysed, offers us new reflections on feminism today"..

"From Mrs Peel in The Avengers to the first female Doctor Who, this book offers a timely focus on the popular phenomenon of the cult TV heroine. First, the enduring phenomenon of Cult TV is carefully explored, taking account of academic approaches to date including questions of genre, the role of the audience and the external environment of technological advances and business drivers. Catriona Miller then suggesting a fresh account of the psychological dimension of the phenomenon utilising Carl Jung's concepts of the transcendent function and active imagination. Her analysis of the heroines themselves focuses on the workings of the audiovisual text alongside examination of narrative and character arcs, to explore the complex ways in which the heroines demonstrate both progressive visions of female emancipation whilst at the same time remaining enmeshed in more traditional representations of femininity. Established Cult TV favourites such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer are examined alongside more contemporary offerings such as Wynonna Earp, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. A thematic approach places each type of heroine (such as warriors and witches) into a historical context, before comparing shows across the decades, with the sometimes surprising conclusion that earlier representations were less conflicted about their feminist credentials, though the most recent (post #Metoo) are allowing a more woman-centred voice to be heard. This book both challenges and celebrates the Cult TV heroine and looks to the role of fantasy in helping us to imagine what might be possible for women in contemporary culture"--

These narratives have become complicated since the uprising due to the Syrian regime's effort to control the revolutionary discourse. As Syria's uprising spawned more terrorist groups, some drama creators became nostalgic for pre-war days. While for some screenwriters a return to pre-2011 life would be welcome after so much bloodshed, others advocated profound cultural and social transformation, instead. They employed marriage and gender metaphors in the stories they wrote to engage in political critique, even at the risk of creating marketing difficulties for the shows or they created escapist stories such as transnational adaptations and Old Damascus tales.     "Since its publication in 1929, the story of Doña Bárbara has haunted the collective Latin-American imagination, and has been adapted variously both for the small and big screen. Doña Bárbara Unleashed explores how Rómulo Gallegos's original story has been kept alive yet altered by subsequent screen adaptations; the book illustrates how film and telenovela adaptations have reinterpreted Doña Bárbara in order to mirror changes in societal norms, such as the role of women in Latin American societies, and audience expectations. Particular attention is given to how spectators in the twenty-first century have played a crucial role influencing the alterations to which Gallegos's original plot has been subjected. Now Doña Bárbara Unleashed offers an original way of studying screen adaptations by engaging several adaptations of the same source text in dialogue with each other, rather than simply comparing adaptations to the source text.     "From Mrs Peel in The Avengers to the first female Doctor Who, this book offers a timely focus on the popular phenomenon of the cult TV heroine. First, the enduring phenomenon of Cult TV is carefully explored, taking account of academic approaches to date including questions of genre, the role of the audience and the external environment of technological advances and business drivers. Catriona Miller then suggesting a fresh account of the psychological dimension of the phenomenon utilising Carl Jung's concepts of the transcendent function and active imagination. Her analysis of the heroines themselves focuses on the workings of the audiovisual text alongside examination of narrative and character arcs, to explore the complex ways in which the heroines demonstrate both progressive visions of female emancipation whilst at the same time remaining enmeshed in more traditional representations of femininity. Established Cult TV favourites such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer are examined alongside more contemporary offerings such as Wynonna Earp, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. A thematic approach places each type of heroine (such as warriors and witches) into a historical context, before comparing shows across the decades, with the sometimes surprising conclusion that earlier representations were less conflicted about their feminist credentials, though the most recent (post #Metoo) are allowing a more woman-centred voice to be heard. This book both challenges and celebrates the Cult TV heroine and looks to the role of fantasy in helping us to imagine what might be possible for women in contemporary culture"--
