"While several essays treating the Civil War poetry of Whitman and Melville together have appeared in scholarly journals over the past few decades, "This Mighty Convulsion" is the first book exclusively devoted to the Civil War writings of these two poets, arguably the most important poets of the most convulsive event in American history. The essays brought together in this volume add significantly to recent critical appreciation of the skill and sophistication of these poets; growing recognition of the complexity of their views of the war; and heightened appreciation for the anxieties they harbored about its aftermath. These essays also add to our critical understanding of the distinctive qualities of the two poets and to a clear appreciation of how their views converged or diverged from one another. Both in the ways they come together and seem mutually influenced, and in the ways they disagree, Whitman and Melville, whether in the smallest of signifiers or in the larger ideological currents of their poetry, grapple with the casualties, complications, and anxieties of the War while highlighting its irresolution. Although often approaching the War and its effects with different assumptions and with markedly different frames of mind, both poets shed light on the conflicting impulses behind the War and probe the gaps and fractures in a way that recognizes the ongoing cultural work of reparation and healing across racial and regional lines." --

"Cultural Authority in the Age of Whitman puts narratives of cultural legitimation in nineteenth-century US literature in a transatlantic context. Exploring how literary professionalism shapes romantic and modern cultural space, GA1/4nter Leypoldt traces the nineteenth-century fusion of poetic radicalism with cultural nationalism from its beginnings in early romanticism to the poetry and poetics of Walt Whitman and Whitman's modernist reinvention as an icon of a native avant-garde. Whitman made cultural nationalism compatible with the rhetorical needs of professional authorship by trying to hold national authenticity and literary authority in a single poetic vision. Yet the notion that his 'language experiment' transformed essential democratic experience into a genuine American aesthetics also owes much to Whitman's retrospective canonization. What Leypoldt calls Whitmanian authority is thus a transatlantic and transhistorical discursive construct that can be approached from four angles. This book begins with an overview of transatlantic contexts such as the nineteenth-century literary field (Bourdieu) and the romantic turn to expressivism (Taylor). A detailed analysis follows on the development of Whitman's positions from the intellectual habitus and cultural criticism of Ralph Waldo Emerson. A third section on Whitmanian authority is located within three conceptual fields that function as contact zones for European and American theories of culture: romantic notions of national style as a kind of music; place-centered concepts of national aesthetics; and traditional ideas about the aesthetic effects of democratic institutions. A final section on Whitman's reinvention between the 1870s and the 1940s discusses how the heterogeneous nineteenth-century perceptions of Whitman's work were streamlined into a modernist version of Whitman's nationalist program"--Publisher description

This book highlights some of the latest currents in Whitman scholarship and demonstrates how Whitman's work can speak to and transform discussions in literary studies during a time of great intellectual ferment. It is organized into three sections, addressing aesthetics and politics, new reading methods, and histories of the critical imagination. This volume contains innovative work on Whitman in a range of fields. With the explosion of the digitization of books and periodicals in the past few years, the entire sense of Whitman's career is changing, and these essays are informed by the latest revelations among primary sources. The New Walt Whitman Studies shows how the latest concerns of literary analysis, from surface reading to ecocriticism to the digital humanities, emerged from an engagement with Whitman's work

"This book is the first to offer a comprehensive selection of Walt Whitman's Civil War poetry and prose with a full commentary on each work. One of the most distinguished critics in Whitman Studies, Ed Folsom, and one of the nation's most prominent writers and literary figures, Christopher Merrill, carry on a dialog with Whitman (and with each other), selection by selection, as they invite readers to enter into the conversation about how Whitman's writing about the Civil War develops, shifts, and manifests itself in different genres throughout the four years of the war. Folsom and Merrill go beyond Whitman's well-known war poems in his Drum-Taps and examine with equal care his Civil War prose writing in Memoranda During the War and in his personal letters. The book offers forty selections of Whitman's war writings, each followed by Folsom's detailed critical examination of the work and then by Merrill's writer's afterword, suggesting broader contexts for thinking about the selection. The Civil War initially shattered Whitman's confidence in the future of the nation he invested so much faith in, but he gradually reconciled himself to the idea that the war ultimately would strengthen the reconstructed United States and would serve as the compost out of which a great democratic future would be built. Folsom and Merrill offer a commentary that takes to heart Whitman's faith in an emerging democratic readership. The real democratic reader, Whitman said, "must himself or herself construct indeed the poem, argument, history, metaphysical essay-the text furnishing the hints, the clue, the start or frame-work," because what is needed for democracy to flourish is "a nation of supple and athletic minds." This book-like our previous one on Whitman's "Song of Myself"-sets out to model this active kind of reading and to encourage both seasoned and new readers of Whitman's war writings to enter into the challenging and exhilarating mode of talking back to Whitman, of engaging him, arguing with him, learning from him, and articulating ways that his responses to America's defining traumatic event continue to speak in surprising new ways to present-day America and to the world beyond America"--

A final section on Whitman's reinvention between the 1870s and the 1940s discusses how the heterogeneous nineteenth-century perceptions of Whitman's work were streamlined into a modernist version of Whitman's nationalist program"--Publisher description.
