    The title σωτήρ, ‘saviour’, is bestowed on Christ and God in the New Testament and rendered in the Latin translations by conseruator, saluificator, salutificator, salutaris and saluator. Although these terms convey the same meaning, they are not interchangeable: this study argues that conseruator, which is the most frequent word for saviour on imperial coins, is rarely attested in the Latin versions because of its association with the imperial cult. The predominant translation, saluator, was coined as an alternative rendering to the other words which had religious and political connotations.

    Two late eighth-century Latin gospel books have recently been identified as witnesses to the pre-Vulgate text of the Gospel according to John. In this article, their text of Mark is analysed and shown also to contain significant Old Latin material notwithstanding their general affiliation to the Vulgate. VL 11A (Würzburg, Universitätsbibliothek M.p.th.f. 67) has an unaltered Old Latin portion between Mark 10:30 and 11:5 and earlier readings throughout the manuscript. There are a number of unique or poorly-attested variants, including de publico in 7:4 and cum omni sollicitudine in Mark 14:44 which may give some clues about the origin of the text. VL 9A (St Petersburg, National Library of Russia F.v.I.8) has a mixed text with a significant proportion of Old Latin readings in Mark 10-14. Some of these are only paralleled by VL 1 (Codex Bobiensis) and represent a very early Latin version. In certain introductions to direct speech, this is the only Latin witness which corresponds to the earliest Greek form of text. It is also suggested that the Durham Gospels (or a closely related manuscript) may have been used to adjust VL 9A towards the Vulgate. A critical apparatus is provided for Mark in each manuscript.

C'est oublier que toutes les traductions en langues occidentales ont pris naissance à partir des traductions latines. L'une d'elles, la Vulgate, fut longtemps considérée comme sacrée, alors qu'elle connut plusieurs révisions jusqu'à la fin du XXe siècle. La croyance en l'immuabilité du latin biblique est donc un leurre qu'il faut dénoncer. Le livre limpide de Peter Stotz dresse un tout autre constat, issu d'une réflexion sur les enjeux et les succès de cette Bible en latin que l'on a cru inspirée, sur l'idée aussi de traduction littéraire.

    This paper concerns the rendering of Hebrew “terebinth” as “valley,” and the mention of a “valley” near Hebron in a plus. In the Targums, the Vulgate and Aquila the “terebinths” of Moreh and Mamre (Gen 12:6; 18:1; Deut 11:30) are represented by a term meaning “valley.” According to the standard analysis this rendering avoids the association of these precincts with non-monotheistic cults. However, this theory fails to explain the use of the term “valley.” Midrashic comments point to anti-Samaritan polemics, based on Deut 11:30, where “terebinth” and “plain,” Arabah, meet. Furthermore, a plus of the Septuagint and the Samaritan mentions “the valley of Hebron” (Gen 23:2; cf. the gloss, 37:14). These constellations are related to a particular sensitivity for the status of the Mamre region in the Persian era and beyond as it belongs to Idumaea, and its religious practice includes non-monotheistic cults.
