    The plot of the late-medieval Spanish work Celestina (1499) centers on the ill-fated love of Calisto and Melibea and the fascinating character of their intermediary, Celestina. In this ground-breaking rereading of the play, James F. Burke offers a new interpretation of the characters' actions by analyzing medieval theories of perception that would have influenced the composition of Celestina. Drawing upon a variety of texts and thinkers-including the medieval theories of Thomas Aquinas, the Renaissance treatises of Marsilio Ficino, the classical philosophy of Aristotle, and the modern psychology of Jacques Lacan-Burke relates ancient and medieval theories of sensory functions to modern understandings. He demonstrates that modern concepts of ";the gaze"; have their premodern analogy in the idea of an all-encompassing sensory field, both visual and auditory, that surrounded and enveloped each individual. Touching on medieval theories of the ";evil eye,"; the sonic sphere, and ";the banquet of the senses,"; Burke offers a new perspective on the use and manipulation of sensory input by the characters of Celestina.     "This study of the House of Fame is the product of a long-time fascination with the poem. The thought of Chaucer having newly returned from several trips to Italy and engaging with the writings of Dante and Boccaccio for the first time, offered an exciting window onto late medieval English literary culture at a moment of profound change. He, and they, newly took up the vernacular against conventional wisdom as the medium to explore philosophical, aesthetic, and theological questions. By reading the House of Fame only as a Dantean poem, many readers have done it a disservice and missed much of the poem's important dialogue with Boccaccio; he left many legacies for Chaucer, the most important of which was a vernacular model for departing from Dantean poetics. Boccaccio also foregrounded a poetics of mural ekphrasis. Chaucer eagerly adopts this, but also fills the House of Fame with a striking concentration of three-dimensional visual images, some evoking the religious statuary of his own time, and some the theme of Apocalypse then popular. Since for the later medieval layperson and cleric, visual literacy often took precedence over literacy of the written word, it is important that we read poetic texts in the context of images. In the House of Fame Chaucer begins to present his own vision (however unfinished) as commensurate with Dante's or even Boccaccio's; the poem has much to tell us about his early acquaintance with the Italian poets and his restless struggle to understand and visualize fame, even on their terms. It is a poem always on the move, always in the process of its own "makyng," flaws and all.     "This book considers cultural identity and power relations in early fourth-century BCE Greece through a reading of Xenophon's historical narratives, the Hellenica, Anabasis and Cyropaedia. These texts depict conflicts between Greek states, conflicts between Greeks and non-Greeks, and relations between the elite individual and society. In all three texts, politically significant moments are imagined in visual terms. We witness spectacles of Spartan military victory, vistas of Asian landscape or displays of Persian imperial pomp, and historical protagonists are presented as spectators viewing and responding to events. Through this visual form of narration, the reader is encouraged imaginatively to place themselves in the position of the historical protagonists. In viewing events from different perspectives, and therefore occupying multiple, often conflicting political positions, the reader not only experiences the problems faced by historical actors, but becomes engaged in the political conflicts acted out in the narratives. The reader is prompted to take pleasure in the sight of Panhellenic achievement, but also to witness the divisions and conflicts between Greeks on class and ethnic lines. Similarly the reader is invited to identify with spectacular Greek and non-Greek figures of power as emblems of Greek imperial potential, but also to see through the eyes of those communities subjugated at their hands. The depiction of spectacles and spectators draws the reader into an active participation in the ideological contradictions of their time, in a period when Panhellenic aspiration co-existed with hegemonic competition between Greek states, and when Greeks could be both beneficiaries and victims of imperialism"--

L’objectivation de l’organe de la vue est, peut-être, le trait dominant de ces histoires et, dans le même temps, une des idées les plus intéressantes de la modernité. Mais l’œil est ici non seulement vu et regardé : il est aussi voyant et regardant. Paradoxalement – et à la fois très logiquement – l’enfermement de l’œil dans l’objectif du discours signifie son ouverture sans précédent dans l’histoire de l’Occident. Ouverture comprise de deux manières : premièrement, chirurgicalement, avec un rasoir, par exemple ; deuxièmement, en perspective, en tant que con-templation obstinée de choses sur lesquelles l’œil ne s’arrêtait pas suffisamment pour qu’elles puissent prendre de l’impor¬tance. Dans ce livre – à l’instar du récit fondateur de Georges Bataille, héros principal de ce livre – l’œil est observé, ouvert, réprimé, pressé, écrasé, révulsé, extirpé, introduit dans des lieux plus ou moins adaptés à ce but, enfin attribué à des objets et des êtres chez lesquels on ne l’attendrait jamais.
