    Giorgione remains the central figure in the scientific discussion dealing with Venetian painting of the age, and accordingly the amount of literature on him is exuberant. The state of scientific discussion which harks back well into the 19th century, proves to be very heterogeneous, a selection of statements proves to be inapt as to serve as a basis for a further critical discussion. The outcome of all this is a general dissent, caused by the poor state of sources and the comparatively small number of secured works. In consequence, we are confronted with a constant struggle of attributions, increasing and decreasing in number, and a host of dates, often contradictory. Es gibt kaum einen anderen italienischen Maler, der die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung so entzweit hat wie Giorgione. Die Ursachen dieser Uneinigkeit beruhen auf einer dürftigen Quellenlage sowie auf dem Umstand, dass nur wenige Werke des Künstlers als gesichert gelten.

    The ludic element contributes substantially to the highly entertaining quality of opera buffa. Within the field of opera research, up to now this aspect has been neglected to a large extent. However, the denomination itself of the buffa-genre usual in the 18th century – “dramma giocoso” – typifies the central role of the playful element in this opera form. On the basis of play theories derived from different disciplines – anthropology, psychology, pedagogy and philosophy – the multilayered moments of play in the opera buffa and its performance context are enucleated by analysing the repertory of Venice, the then “capital of amusement”. Thereby, the concept of play is used as an interpretive key applied to this cultural phenomenon as a whole. Das Element des Spielerischen trägt wesentlich zum hohen Unterhaltungswert der Opera buffa bei. Dieser Aspekt ist von der Forschung bisher weitgehend vernachlässigt worden. Dabei weist schon allein die im 18. Jahrhundert übliche Gattungsbezeichnung „dramma giocoso“ auf die zentrale Rolle des Spielerischen in dieser Opernform hin. Auf der Grundlage von Spieltheorien aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen - Anthropologie, Psychologie, Pädagogik und Philosophie - werden am Repertoire Venedigs, der damaligen „Hauptstadt des Vergnügens“, die vielschichtigen Momente des Spiels der Opera buffa und ihres Aufführungskontexts herausgearbeitet und untersucht. Der Spielbegriff dient dabei als Interpretationsschlüssel des gesamten Kulturphänomens.

    Based on the contributions given at a conference held at the University of Cagliari in September 2017, this collection of essays provides an insight into the distribution and acquisition of printed books in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Publishers’ and booksellers’ catalogues are examined as evidence of the advertising and selling techniques used by agents in the book trade, with a focus on book prices. The role of sixteenth-century private libraries and the growing phenomenon of book collecting are studied within a commercial frame. In this context, private collections are investigated as places of preservation rather than consumption, of the works being circulated within the book trade.

    This book results from Robert Klugseder’s discovery of new fragments in Vienna (Fragm. 661) and Margaret Bent’s recognition that they belonged to the same original manuscript as a set of fragments in Munich (Mus. Ms. 3224, Aalready known). Together they make a torso of 12 leaves with 20 compositions, nearly half of which are unique, an important complement to the already-known Veneto manuscripts of international repertory of the first half of the 15th century. A high-quality colour facsimile of these leaves, together with associated fragmentary survivals, is preceded by an in-depth codicological and repertorial study in German and English.

    For nearly a decade at the height of the Counter-Reformation in Italy, the Jewish poet and polemicist Sarra Copia Sulam (ca. 1592-1641) hosted a literary salon at her house in the Venetian ghetto, providing one of the most public and enduring forums for Jewish-Christian interaction in early modern Venice. Though Copia Sulam built a powerful intellectual network, published a popular work on the immortality of the soul, and gained fame for her erudition, her literary career foundered under the weight of slanderous charges against her sexual, professional, and religious integrity. This first biography of Copia Sulam examines the explosive relationship between gender, religion, and the press in seventeenth-century Venice through a study of the salonnière's literary career. The backdrop to this inquiry is Venice's tumultuous religious, cultural, and political climate and the competitive world of its presses, where men and women, Christians and Jews, alternately collaborated and clashed as they sought to gain a foothold in Europe's most prestigious publishing capital

    Presented for the first time in English, the recently discovered early manuscripts of the twentieth century’s most towering literary figure offer uncanny glimpses of his emerging genius and the creation of his masterpiece.One of the most significant literary events of the century, the discovery of manuscript pages containing early drafts of Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time put an end to a decades-long search for the Proustian grail. The Paris publisher Bernard de Fallois claimed to have viewed the folios, but doubts about their existence emerged when none appeared in the Proust manuscripts bequeathed to the Bibliothèque Nationale in 1962. The texts had in fact been hidden among Fallois’s private papers, where they were found upon his death in 2018. The Seventy-Five Folios and Other Unpublished Manuscripts presents these folios here for the first time in English, along with seventeen other brief unpublished texts. Extensive commentary and notes by the Proust scholar Nathalie Mauriac Dyer offer insightful critical analysis.Characterized by Fallois as the “precious guide” to understanding Proust’s masterpiece, the folios contain early versions of six episodes included in the novel. Readers glimpse what Proust’s biographer Jean-Yves Tadié describes as the “sacred moment” when the great work burst forth for the first time. The folios reveal the autobiographical extent of Proust’s writing, with traces of his family life scattered throughout. Before the existence of Charles Swann, for example, we find a narrator named Marcel, a testament to what one scholar has called “the gradual transformation of lived experience into (auto)fiction in Proust’s elaboration of the novel.”Like a painter’s sketches and a composer’s holographs, Proust’s folios tell a story of artistic evolution. A “dream of a book, a book of a dream,” Fallois called them. Here is a literary magnum opus finding its final form

    It may certainly be said that nothing can be assumed about Shakespeare: on the one hand, the Elizabethan poet seems to be thriving, with more editions, productions, studies, and translations appearing every year; on the other hand, in a time of global crisis and decolonization, the question of why Shakespeare is relevant at all is now more pertinent than ever. Shakespeare in Succession approaches the question of relevance by positioning Shakespeare as a participant as well as an object of adaptive translation, a labour that has always mediated between the foreign and the domestic, between the past and the present, between the arcane and the urgent. The volume situates Shakespeare on a continuum of transfers that can be understood from cultural, spatial, temporal, or linguistic points of view by studying how the text of Shakespeare is transformed into other languages and examining Shakespeare himself as a kind of translator of previous times, older stories, and prior theatrical and linguistic systems. Contending with the poet’s contemporary fate, Shakespeare in Succession asks how Shakespeare’s work can be offered to the multicultural present in which we live, and how we might relate our position to that of the iconic writer

    Die venezianische Pastell- und Miniaturmalerin Rosalba Carriera (1673–1757) war in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts ob ihrer teils intim wirkenden Bildnisse und besonderen Maltechnik zu großem Ruhm gekommen. Ihr Erfolg bemaß sich unter anderem daran, dass zu ihrem Kundenkreis Angehörige der Hocharistokratie zählten. Anika Schediwy untersucht mittels eines interdisziplinären Forschungsansatzes ausgewählte Miniatur- und Pastellwerke der Künstlerin. Im Besonderen betrachtet sie die Kunstwerke vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Entstehungszusammenhänge, der zeitgenössischen Rezeption und ihrer Verwendungsweisen innerhalb einer sich wandelnden Kommunikations- und Körperkultur der Aristokratie. So differenziert sie das Bild der Person und Künstlerin. Rosalba Carriera (1673–1757), the Venetian painter of pastel and miniature artwork, became famous for her partially intimate portraits and special painting technique in the first half of the 18th century. Her success was measured, among other things, by the fact that her clientele included members of the high aristocracy. Using an interdisciplinary research approach, Anika Schediwy examines selected miniature and pastel paintings by the artist. In particular, it examines the artworks against the background of their contexts of origin, contemporary reception and their use within the changing communication and physical culture of the aristocracy. In this way, it differentiates between the image of the person and the artist.

    For nearly a decade at the height of the Counter-Reformation in Italy, the Jewish poet and polemicist Sarra Copia Sulam (ca. 1592-1641) hosted a literary salon at her house in the Venetian ghetto, providing one of the most public and enduring forums for Jewish-Christian interaction in early modern Venice. Though Copia Sulam built a powerful intellectual network, published a popular work on the immortality of the soul, and gained fame for her erudition, her literary career foundered under the weight of slanderous charges against her sexual, professional, and religious integrity. This first biography of Copia Sulam examines the explosive relationship between gender, religion, and the press in seventeenth-century Venice through a study of the salonnière's literary career. The backdrop to this inquiry is Venice's tumultuous religious, cultural, and political climate and the competitive world of its presses, where men and women, Christians and Jews, alternately collaborated and clashed as they sought to gain a foothold in Europe's most prestigious publishing capital
