Anhand von zahlreichen Beispielen stellt er die Faszination, das Geheimnisvolle und das Anziehende der Hässlichkeit dar. (Irene Ittekkot) Der "Geschichte der Schönheit" (BA 11/04), ebenfalls herausgegeben vom Universalgelehrten und Bestsellerautor U. Eco, folgt als Pendant diese "Geschichte der Hässlichkeit" in gleicher Gestaltung und nach gleichem Konzept. Doch während zur Schönheit seit Jahrhunderten philosophische und ästhetische Theorien existieren, gibt es zur Hässlichkeit keinen vergleichbaren theoretisch-begrifflichen Überbau. Ist das Hässliche das Böse, das Groteske, das Ekelhafte, das Obszöne, das Unheimliche oder gar der Kitsch? Wie bei der Schönheit wandeln sich auch die Begriffe - nach der Kunstauffassung der griechischen Antike beispielsweise hätte ein Abbild des Gekreuzigten niemals als schön gelten können - und dieses Buch geht dem "Hässlichkeitsverständnis" von der Antike bis heute in vielen Bildern und Zitaten nach. Im Grunde sind beide Werke aufeinander bezogen - schon die Geschichte der Schönheit enthielt 1 Kapitel über das Schöne im Hässlichen - sodass dort, wo das eine Buch steht, auch das andere hingehört.     Sloppy craft', interpreted as messy or unfinished in execution and/or appearance, concerns art and craft practices which question the privileging of skill. 'Sloppy craft: Post-disciplinarity and the crafts' brings together leading international artists, historians, theorists and educators to explore the possibilities and limitations of the idea of 'sloppy craft' within an interdisciplinary (or even postdisciplinary) context. Contributors from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia address 'sloppiness' in contemporary art and craft practice, discuss the importance of traditional concepts of skill, and the implications of sloppiness for a new 21st century emphasis on inter and postdisciplinarity, as well as for activist, performance, queer and Aboriginal practices. The book focuses closely on English literary culture but also engages with wider European perspectives, drawing on a wide array of primary sources including Italian and other European visual art. Offering illuminating close readings of texts from both high and low culture, it will interest scholars in English literature, cultural studies, women's studies, history and art history, as well as postgraduate and undergraduate students in these disciplines. Anhand von zahlreichen Beispielen stellt er die Faszination, das Geheimnisvolle und das Anziehende der Hässlichkeit dar. (Irene Ittekkot) Der "Geschichte der Schönheit" (BA 11/04), ebenfalls herausgegeben vom Universalgelehrten und Bestsellerautor U. Eco, folgt als Pendant diese "Geschichte der Hässlichkeit" in gleicher Gestaltung und nach gleichem Konzept. Doch während zur Schönheit seit Jahrhunderten philosophische und ästhetische Theorien existieren, gibt es zur Hässlichkeit keinen vergleichbaren theoretisch-begrifflichen Überbau. Ist das Hässliche das Böse, das Groteske, das Ekelhafte, das Obszöne, das Unheimliche oder gar der Kitsch? Wie bei der Schönheit wandeln sich auch die Begriffe - nach der Kunstauffassung der griechischen Antike beispielsweise hätte ein Abbild des Gekreuzigten niemals als schön gelten können - und dieses Buch geht dem "Hässlichkeitsverständnis" von der Antike bis heute in vielen Bildern und Zitaten nach. Im Grunde sind beide Werke aufeinander bezogen - schon die Geschichte der Schönheit enthielt 1 Kapitel über das Schöne im Hässlichen - sodass dort, wo das eine Buch steht, auch das andere hingehört.
