    In einer ländlichen Region Ugandas (Busoga) versuchen die Menschen ihren durch den zunehmenden Einfluss der Globalisierung erschwerten Lebensbedingungen zu begegnen und sich Handlungsspielräume zu schaffen. Aus postkolonialer Perspektive untersucht die Autorin die Rolle solidarischen Wirtschaftens hierbei. Dessen Nutzen als Überlebensstrategie wird ebenso beleuchtet wie sein Potenzial, Alternativen zu konventionellen Ansätzen wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung zu denken. An die Stelle westlichen „Expertentums“ tritt gelebte Erfahrung aus dem globalen Süden. Die Autorin beschreibt den Einfluss der Globalisierung auf den Alltag der Bevölkerung sowie auf soziale Ungleichheiten und stellt ihren postkolonialen Forschungsansatz detailliert dar. In a rural region of Uganda (Busoga), people are trying to manage their everyday lives and gain agency despite the negative effects of globalisation on their living conditions. In this book, from a postcolonial perspective, the author examines the role of solidarity-based economic activities in that process. She illuminates both the usefulness of solidarity-based economic activities as a survival strategy and their potential to offer alternatives to conventional approaches to economic development. Western ‘expertise’ is replaced by lived experiences from the global South. The author describes the influence of globalisation on the everyday life of the population as well as on social inequalities and presents her postcolonial research approach in detail.

Julia Schöneberg ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Universität Kassel im DFG-Projekt „Theorizing Post-Development. Towards a reinvention of development theory“. Aram Ziai ist Leiter des Fachgebiets Entwicklungspolitik und Postkoloniale Studien an der Universität Kassel. Mit Beiträgen von Frauke Banse, Anne-Katharina Wittmann, Albert Denk, Esther Kronsbein, Christine Klapeer, Julia Plessing, Meike Strehl, Julia Schöneberg, Gabriela Monteiro und Ruth Steuerwald, Fiona Faye, Jacqueline Krause und Joshua KwesiAikins. Postcolonial critique reveals the Eurocentrism of discourses and practices surrounding ‘development’. This volume opens up perspectives on combating global inequality beyond a Eurocentric world view. The authors analyse the colonial continuities of current development cooperation, explore decolonial strategies in research and practice, and outline alternatives in terms of post-development. Julia Schöneberg is a research assistant at the University of Kassel on the DFG project ‘Theorizing Post-Development. Towards a reinvention of development theory’.     An ambitious look at the African novel and its connections to African philosophy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuriesThe African Novel of Ideas focuses on the role of the philosophical novel and the place of philosophy more broadly in the intellectual life of the African continent, from the early twentieth century to today. Examining works from the Gold Coast, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, and tracing how such writers as J. E. Casely Hayford, Imraan Coovadia, Tendai Huchu, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, and Stanlake Samkange reconcile deep contemplation with their social situations, Jeanne-Marie Jackson offers a new way of reading and understanding African literature.Jackson begins with Fante anticolonial worldliness in prenationalist Ghana, moves through efforts to systematize Shona philosophy in 1970s Zimbabwe, looks at the Ugandan novel Kintu as a treatise on pluralistic rationality, and arrives at the treatment of “philosophical suicide” by current southern African writers.     The overall goal of decentralizing seed services is to increase the availability and accessibility of quality seed to farmers. The governments of Uganda and Tanzania have endeavoured to enhance access to improved seed for smallholder farmers. These efforts have achieved results and encountered challenges. The successes include an increase in the number of key players in the seed sector in general. In Uganda, the number of community seed banks (CSBs) has increased from one to five over the last five years (Adokorach et al., 2020). The number of Local Seed Businesses (LSBs)has increased from 27 in 2012 to 256 in 2020. In addition to the increase in actors involved in improved seed production, the interaction between them has also improved. The LSBs are developing strong links with the Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (ZARDI), and the CSBs are working closely with the Plant Genetic Resources Centre. In Tanzania, the government has demonstrated willingness to support the production of Quality Declared Seed (QDS) through the enactment of the QDS Regulations in July 2020. The new regulations clarify hitherto grey areas and introduce fees for inspection, germination, and moisture tests, among others. In addition to introducing the regulations, the sector has also demonstrated steady performance over the years. QDS production has increased five-fold between 2015 and 2019. QDS farmers work closely with the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), the Agricultural Seed Agency (ASA) and district agricultural officers to ensure that farmers produce quality seeds. Despite these notable improvements, various challenges affect the performance of the decentralized seed system. The two specific services that have yet to be fully decentralized are the management of plant genetic resources in Tanzania and seed testing in both countries. Even though other seed services have been decentralized, further challenges persist. For example, some of the system's key players, namely the CSBs, LSBs, and QDS farmers, are not yet financially sustainable. These entities are still dependent on external project support. Without it they may not cover some of their operational costs. It is important to note that the decentralized system's challenges may be, because the system and some of the players are still in their infancy. The regulatory framework for QDS is yet to be finalized and implemented in Uganda. In addition, most of the CSBs and LSBs are less than seven years old. The first few years of their operations were mainly dedicated to setting up their governance and operational structures. An evaluation of their performance over the next few years would provide a completer and more comprehensive picture of their performance and the viability of various decentralized services. One notable difference between the QDS system in Uganda and Tanzania is the presence of a coordinating entity. In Uganda, Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) Uganda has actively played the role of a coordinating agency to advance the production of QDS in the country. In Tanzania, such an agency does not exist. As such, many activities in Tanzania are less coordinated.

    Based on unique primary surveys, we study dairy transformation processes in East Africa, specifically in Ethiopia and Uganda. Evidence on transformation and differential paths followed in doing so in these countries is often limited due to a lack of data. We note significant changes in the dairy sector over the last decade - with more adoption of cross-bred cows and higher milk yields - seemingly driven by rapid changes in local demand (Ethiopia and Uganda) and export markets (Uganda). However, while small farmers were included in that transformation in Uganda, they were not in Ethiopia. This was seemingly driven by better and cheaper accessibility for cross-bred cows that small farmers can better bear in Uganda.
