    Mit der Unfall-Literatur behandelt die Verfasserin ein Genre, das nicht erst durch Höhenkammtexte von AutorInnen wie Franz Kafka und Robert Musil an Aufmerksamkeit verdient. Wenigstens seit dem 19. Jahrhundert fordern technische Katastrophen durch ihre neue Kontingenzerfahrung und ihren wahrnehmungsbedingten Entzug die kollektive Einbildungskraft heraus. Die vorliegende Studie geht von der These aus, dass die Unfall-Texte der literarischen Moderne (1880–1930er Jahre) einen Mythos ausbilden, der in ein produktives Spannungsverhältnis zu den neuen Massenmedien und Diskursen wie der Thermodynamik und der Physiologie gerät. Seine vielgestaltige Transformation wird entlang dreier Narrative nachvollzogen, die, ausgehend von den Risikosphären des Naturalismus (Hauptmann, Langmann, Zola, Alberti) hinüber zu den avantgardistischen Schöpfungsgeschichten (Marinetti, Höch, Jünger, Hesse) bis hin zu den medienreflexiven Kurztexten der Klassischen Moderne (Mann, Kafka, Bierbaum, Musil), einen facettenreichen Einblick in die Erzählweisen, Deutungspraktiken wie auch ästhetischen und rhetorischen Verfahren des Unfall-Mythos bieten. In this book, the author examines literature that portrays accidents, an aesthetic genre whose notable examples extend beyond texts by famous authors like Franz Kafka and Robert Musil. Technical disasters have provoked the collective imagination since the 19th century because of the new experience of contingency they create and the way they alter perception. This study argues that literature that depicts accidents creates a modern myth (1880s–1930s) which maintains an exciting connection with the mass media and discourses like thermodynamics and physiology. Its varied transformation is shown through three narrative genres. Starting from naturalism’s spheres of risk-taking (Hauptmann, Langmann, Zola, Alberti) to the avantgarde narrations of creation (Marinetti, Höch, Jünger, Hesse) and those texts of classical modernity (Mann, Kafka, Bierbaum, Musil) reflexive of modern media, the study offers a multifaceted insight into the narrative style, interpretation and the aesthetic and rhetorical processes involved in the literary depiction and mythicisation of accidents.

    More than just a book, Storytelling in Northern Zambia lets you watch videos of the storytellers while you read. Storytelling plays an important part in the vibrant cultural life of Zambia and in many other communities across Africa. This innovative book provides a collection and analysis of oral narrative traditions as practiced by five Bemba-speaking ethnic groups in Zambia. The integration of newly digitalised audio and video recordings into the text enables the reader to encounter the storytellers themselves and hear their narratives as they were recounted during Robert Cancel’s research trips to Zambia. Robert Cancel's thorough critical interpretation, combined with these newly digitalised audio and video materials, makes Storytelling in Northern Zambia a much needed addition to the slender corpus of African folklore studies that deal with storytelling performance. Cancel threads his way between the complex demands of African fieldwork studies, folklore theory, narrative modes, reflexive description and simple documentation and succeeds in bringing to the reader a set of performers and their performances that are vivid, varied and instructive. He illustrates this living narrative tradition with a wide range of examples, and highlights the social status of narrators and the complex local identities that are at play. Cancel’s innovative study tells us not only about storytelling but sheds light on the study of oral literatures throughout Africa and beyond. Its innovative format, meanwhile, explores new directions in the integration of primary source material into scholarly texts. Rehearsals of Manhood makes this groundbreaking work available for the first time, presenting an entirely novel picture of Greek tragedy and a vivid portrait of the cultural poetics of Athenian manhood.Ancient Athens was a military conclave as well as an urban capital, and male citizens were expected to embody the ideal of the Athenian citizen-soldier. Winkler understands Attic drama as a secular manhood ritual, a collaborative aesthetic and civic enterprise focused on the initiation of boys into manhood and the training, testing, and representation of young male warriors. Past efforts to discover the origins and development of Greek tragedy have largely treated drama as a literary genre, isolating it from other Athenian social practices. Winkler returns Greek tragedy to its social context, showing how it was one among many forms of display and performance cultivated by elite males in ancient Greece.The final work of a celebrated classical scholar, Rehearsals of Manhood highlights the civic function of the dramatic festivals at classical Athens as occasions for the examination and representation of boys on the verge of manhood, and offers a fresh explanation of how dramatic performance fit into the social life and gender politics of the Athenian state

    This volume represents a contribution to comparative scholarship in Medieval and Renaissance studies in its investigation of the ingenious diversity of roguish practices found in Medieval and Renaissance literature and its recognition of the coherent normative function of tales of tricksters and pranksters. The wide variety of works analysed, from those forming part of the established canon of texts on undergraduate degree schemes to lesser-known works, makes the volume of interest to students and researchers alike. The roguish behaviour of women, priests, foxes and outlaws and the knavery of Eulenspiegel and Panurge are used to illustrate how rituals of inversion and humiliation typical of the medieval carnival are reflected in literary accounts of trickery, and to question whether the restorative function attributed to carnival celebration is equally to be found in the intra-textual and extra-textual outcomes of trickery. This analysis is supported by studies into the trickster in mythology, sociological investigations into the role of disorder, Bakhtinian theories of carnival and the carnivalesque, and theories of black humour.

    This book offers a new approach to the problem of evil through an examination of the anthropological figure of the 'trickster'. A lesser known and much more recent term than evil, the authors use the trickster to facilitate a greater understanding of the return of evil in the modern era. Instead of simply opposing 'good' and 'evil', the figure of the trickster is used to pursue the trajectories of similarities and quasi-similarities through imitation. After engaging with the trickster as presented in comparative anthropology and mythology, where it appears in tales and legends as a strange, erratic outsider, the authors seek to gain an inside perspective of trickster knowledge through an examination of mythology and the classical world, including both philosophers and poets. The book then goes on to trace the trickster through prehistory, using archaeological evidence to complement the diverse narratives. In this way, and by investigating the knowledge and customs surrounding evil, the authors use the figure of the trickster to provide an unprecedented diagnosis of the contemporary world, where external, mechanical rationality has become taken for granted and even considered as foundational in politics, economics, and technologised science. The authors advance the idea that the modern world, with its global free markets, mass mediatic democracy and technologised science, represents a universalisation of trickster logic. The Political Sociology and Anthropology of the Evil will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of social theory, political anthropology and political sociology, as well as those interested in the ways in which evil can infiltrate reality. --

Als Irritation und Provokation des Gewohnten ermöglicht ihr Auftreten ein momentanes Innehalten und offeriert durch die inhärenten Spannungen Kontraste und Ambiguität, durch die sich neue Sichtweisen auf Gewohntes eröffnen. Der Sammelband ›Auf den Kopf gestellt. Interdisziplinäre Betrachtungen der Trickster-Figur‹ vereint verschiedene Perspektiven auf eine Figur und erweitert die Forschungstradition – ganz im Sinne des Tricksters –, indem Bestehendes kritisch befragt und neu gedacht wird. As confusion and provocation of the familiar, tricksters enable us to pause for a moment, and they offer new perspectives through their ambivalence. The book ‘Auf den Kopf gestellt. Interdisziplinäre Betrachtungen der Trickster-Figur’ (Upside Down. Interdisciplinary Reflections on the Character of the Trickster) is part of a long tradition of trickster research and, in line with a trickster’s nature, aims to critically question existing hypotheses and expand our current understanding of tricksters.
