Wales in the poetry of Edward Thomas / Dr. Andrew Webb. Wales in the life and works of Edward Thomas : A chronology : Posthumous Welsh responses. Afterword. Appendix 1: The Welsh friends of Edward Thomas: Watcyn Wyn, John Jenkins (Gwili), and Owen M. Edwards. Appendix 2: An unsigned review of The Happy-Go-Lucky Morgans, from The Welsh Review, November 1914. Appendix 3: Stephen Lushington's memoir of his father, Frnaklin Lushington, and Edward Thomas. Bibliography : Primary sources -- Secondary sources -- Periodicals. Offers a fascinating re-evaluation of Thomas's writing. Bringing together fro the first time the prose and poetry centered in Thomas's ancestral land of Wales, it explores the "Welshness" of Thomas's work and of Thomas himself. It offers us a context for the subjects, language choices, and tales that were informed by Thomas's childhood visits to Wales as well as giving us a new perspective on Thomas. Edward Thomas's passion for Wales was ignited aged 5. It never left him. Origins fascinate people, especially their own, and Edward Thomas was no exception. With extracts taken from Thomas's prose and poems, alongside a selection of key life events, the importance of Thomas's Welsh origins and the ways in which Wales the place, its people and its literature permeated his life and writings is revealed. Edited with an introduction by Jeff Towns, and featuring an essay on the influence of Wales on the poetry of Edward Thomas by Andrew Webb

A hundred years ago Edward Thomas was killed in the Battle of Arras (April 1917). The reputation of his poetry has never been higher. Edna Longley has already edited Thomas’s poems and prose. She now marks his centenary, and adds to the growing field of Thomas studies, with this close reading of his poetry. Longley places the lyric poem at the centre of Thomas’s poetry and of his thinking about poetry. Drawing on Thomas’s own remarkable critical writings, she argues that his importance to emergent ‘modern poetry’ has yet to be fully appreciated

This books presents the first extended study of the relationship between British modernist poetry and the environment. Challenging reductive associations of modernism as predominantly anthropocentric in character and urban in focus, the book’s central argument is that within British modernist poetry there is a clear and sustained interest in the natural world which has yet to receive adequate critical attention. Whilst modernist studies continues to emphasize the plurality of the movement and the breadth of voices and concerns within it, the environmental consciousness of modernist literature and its response to changes to human/nature relations following the experience of war and modernity remain largely unexamined. Exploring British modernist poetry from an ecocritical perspective offers a fresh approach to the movement and its context, and produces original readings of both canonical and more marginalized modernist voices. This book opens by discussing the relationship between modernism and ecocriticism and the benefits of creating a dialogue between the two. It then presents new readings of Edward Thomas, T. S. Eliot, Edith Sitwell, and Charlotte Mew that reveal a shared preoccupation with environmental issues and a common desire to find new ways of achieving physical, psychological, and artistic reconnection with nature.--

Extensively illustrated throughout with a wealth of new material and told with clarity, panache and wit, Thomas's life makes for absorbing reading: his early forced marriage, his dependence on opium, his friendships with leading figures such as Joseph Conrad, Edward Garnett, Rupurt Brooke, Walter de la Mare, Hilaire Belloc, Eleanor Farjeon and Robert Frost and the events leading up to his death in France in 1917. Moorcroft Wilson dispels the myth-making surrounding Thomas in order to reveal his true worth as a writer and as a war poet equal in talent to such great contemporaries as Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rupert Brooke. With startling new information on the true details of Thomas's death at the Battle of Arras on 9 April 1917, his attitude to the army and his relationship with his loving wife, Helen, as well as a reconsideration of the fashioning of Thomas as depressive and melancholic, Edward Thomas: From Adlestrop to Arras discovers the man whose contribution to English poetry cannot be overstated, whose work can now be seen to be 'situated on the cusp of history and on the brink of modern selfhood'. In this remarkable contribution to our knowledge of the poet, Moorcroft Wilson shows that Thomas's work could not be more important to the literary world of today; this is the extraordinary life of a poetic genius. -- from dust jacket

Edward Thomas was perhaps the most beguiling and influential of First World War poets. Now All Roads Lead to France is an account of his final five years, centred on his extraordinary friendship with Robert Frost and Thomas's fatal decision to fight in the war. The book also evokes an astonishingly creative moment in English literature, when London was a battleground for new, ambitious kinds of writing. A generation that included W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost and Rupert Brooke were 'making it new' - vehemently and pugnaciously. These larger-than-life characters surround a central figure, tormented by his work and his marriage. But as his friendship with Frost blossomed, Thomas wrote poem after poem, and his emotional affliction began to lift. In 1914 the two friends formed the ideas that would produce some of the most remarkable verse of the twentieth century. But the War put an ocean between them: Frost returned to the safety of New England while Thomas stayed to fight for the Old. It is these roads taken - and those not taken - that are at the heart of this remarkable book, which culminates in Thomas's tragic death on Easter Monday 1917
