    Genocide Perspectives VI grapples with two core themes: the personal toll of genocide, and processes that facilitate the crime. From political choices governments and leaders make, through to denialism and impunity, the crime of genocide recurs again and again, across the globe. At what cost to individuals and communities? What might the legacy of this criminality be? This collection of essays examines the personal sacrifice genocide takes from those who live through the trauma, and the generations that follow. Contributors speak to the way visual art and literature attempt to represent genocide, hoping to make sense of problematic histories while also offering a means of reflection after years of “slow violence” or silenced memories. Some authors generously allow us into their own histories, or contemplate how they may have experienced genocide had they been born in another time or place. What facets contribute to the processes that lead to, or enable the crime of genocide? This collection explores those processes through a variety of case studies and lenses. How do nurses, whose role is inherently linked to care and compassion, become mass killers? How do restrictions on religious freedom play a role in advancing genocidal policies, and why do perpetrators of genocide often target religious leaders? Why is it so important for Australia and other nations with histories of colonial genocide to acknowledge their past? Among the essays published in this volume, we have the privilege and the sorrow of publishing the very last essay Professor Colin Tatz wrote before his passing in 2019. His contribution reveals, yet again, the enormous influence of both his research and his original ideas on genocide. He reflects on continuing legacies for Indigenous Australian communities, with whom he worked for many decades, and adds nuance to contemporary understanding of the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust, two other cases to which he was deeply committed.

    Der Band bietet zwei Zugänge zur Literatur der Shoah: Er widmet sich einzelnen Autoren und neuen Forschungsperspektiven. Mit H. G. Adler und Thomas Harlan stellt er zunächst zwei wenig beachtete Schriftsteller vor. Von Adler, einem Überlebenden der Shoah aus Prag, sind noch immer nicht alle Werke publiziert – darunter eine bedeutende Korrespondenz aus der Nachkriegszeit. Harlan setzte sich zeitlebens mit dem Genozid an den europäischen Juden auseinander – nicht zuletzt, weil sein Vater, Veit Harlan, den Massenmord durch seine Filme ideologisch vorbereitet hatte. Intensiv diskutiert wurde dagegen über Peter Weiss’ spätes Hauptwerk Die Ästhetik des Widerstands. Unter dem Aspekt der Ko-Erinnerung an die Shoah wird es neu perspektiviert. Der zweite Schwerpunkt entwirft und vertieft neue theoretische Orientierungen der Holocaust Studies. Mit Hilfe von Konzepten wie Ko-Erinnerung, Tabu und Transnationalität tragen die Studien zur Neuvermessung des Forschungsgebiets bei. Neben dem Stellenwert der Übersetzungen für die Rezeption der Shoah-Literatur in Deutschland wird auch der konstitutiv transnationale Charakter dieser Literatur herausgearbeitet. Ein grundsätzlicher Blick auf den Zusammenhang von Sprache und Diktatur beschließt den Band.

    The legacy of the Second World War remains unsettled; no consensus has been achieved about its meaning and its lasting impact. This is pre-eminently the case in France, where the experience of defeat and occupation created the grounds for a deeply ambiguous mixture of resistance and collaboration, pride and humiliation, heroism and abjection, which writers and politicians have been trying to disentangle ever since. This book develops a theoretical approach which draws on trauma studies and hermeneutics; and it then focuses on some of the intellectuals who lived through the war and on how their experience and troubled memories of it continue to echo through their later writing, even and especially when it is not the explicit topic. This was an astonishing generation of writers who would go on to play a pivotal role on a global scale in post-war aesthetic and philosophical endeavours. The book proposes close readings of works by some of the most brilliant amongst them: Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Charlotte Delbo, Paul Ricoeur, Emmanuel Levinas, Louis Althusser, Jorge Semprun, Elie Wiesel, and Sarah Kofman.

    We are reaching a point in history when the generation who

    experienced the Holocaust as survivors, witnesses or exiles will

    soon disappear. What happens to our relationship to such a

    momentous event in global history when our living connection

    with such a past is broken? To answer this question, this article

    will explore recent French representations of the Holocaust

    through the comic book. It will approach such representations

    from the perspective of the grandchildren of those who were

    affected by the Holocaust, perhaps the last generation to have

    personal ties to this wartime past. It will focus specifically on

    Jérémie Dres’s Nous n’irons pas voir Auschwitz (2011), translated as

    We Won’t Go and See Auschwitz. As a “third generation” narrative,

    Dres’s work is attentive to stories of Jewish exile and loss to be

    found on the margins of Holocaust histories. This perspective

    translates into an openness towards transnational histories of the

    Holocaust; a recognition of place as a substitute for living memory

    and an awareness of comics’ potential to innovate in the

    transmission of Holocaust memories. Ultimately, this article will

    argue that the contemporary comic book acts as a privileged

    vehicle of remembrance, indicative of the reordering of Holocaust

    representations in an age of cultural memory.

    This edited volume examines the representation of victims beyond the categories of the “victim cult,” self-victimization, and the victim–perpetrator dichotomy. Adopting a transnational perspective, it mainly considers literature written after 1989, leveraging concepts of dialogical and multidirectional memory to facilitate differentiated perspectives in the politics of memory regarding the highly charged figure of the victim. Das Buch befasst sich aus literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Sicht mit der Repräsentation von Opfern abseits von ‚Opferkult‘, (Selbst-)Viktimisierung und Täter-Opfer-Binarität in vorwiegend nach 1989 entstandenen literarischen Texten. Dabei werden Konzepte dialogischen bzw. multidirektionalen Erinnerns sowie eine transnationale Perspektive produktiv gemacht, um differenzierte Sichtweisen auf die gedächtnispolitisch brisante Figur des Opfers zu eröffnen.

    Memorial museums are understood as flagships of the respective country’s memory politics – in the context of transnational processes. How do big, publicly (co-)funded memorial museums that (re-)opened after 1989 in the eleven post-Communist EU member states exhibit the World War II period? Beyond a mere overview of the museum and their history the book analyzes how ‚double‘ and ‚tripple‘ occupation, Holocaust, victimhood and collaboration are represented in the permanent exhibitions and which role EU accession talks and authoritarian tendencies played and play in this. Im Vordergrund der Studie steht das Gedenkmuseum als Flaggschiff der Geschichtspolitik des jeweiligen Landes im Kontext transnationaler Prozesse. Wie wird die Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs in großen, öffentlich (mit )finanzierten Gedenkmuseen, die nach 1989 (wieder )eröffnet wurden, in den elf ‚osteuropäischen‘ EU-Mitgliedsländern repräsentiert? Über den Überblick über die Museen und ihre Entstehungsgeschichte hinausgehend wurde untersucht, wie ‚doppelte‘ bzw. ‚dreifache‘ Okkupation und der Holocaust, Opfernarrative und Kollaboration in den ständigen Ausstellungen verhandelt werden und welche Auswirkungen die EU-Beitrittsbemühungen und autoritäre Tendenzen auf dieses Aushandeln hatten und haben.

    Tätowiert auf Körper, gedruckt auf Papier; mit Schriftzeichen und Ziffern wird die Wirklichkeit bestimmt, werden Macht und Gewalt ausgeübt - so zeichnen es die Stücke des Dokumentartheaters, die sich der Aufarbeitung von Holocaust und Totalitarismus, von individueller und kollektiver Schuld verschrieben haben. Den Anspruch, aufzuklären und Wahrheit zu vermitteln, unterstreichen die Dramentexte, wenn sie wiederum selbst auf schriftliche Quellen verweisen, auf Dokumente und Augenzeugenberichte. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Rolle des Mediums Schrift, die Bedeutung des Schreibens und Lesens in Dramentexten des dokumentarischen Theaters der 1960er und 1970er Jahre, und zwar in thematischer wie in formaler Hinsicht. Sie sucht damit einen völlig anderen Zugang zum Dokumentartheater zu erschließen und versteht sich als Beitrag zur Definitionsproblematik der Gattung, die bis heute besteht

But with the Eastern expansion of the EU, new member states have challenged theHolocaust's singularity, calling for the traumas of the Stalinist Gulag to be acknowledged much more explicitly. Thus even though Europe has been unified politically, it is divided by its diverging perceptions of the past.Jessica Ortner argues that German-Jewish writers from Eastern Europe and the GDR who migrated to Germany as refugees during or after the Cold War have responded critically to the need to widen European cultural memory to include thetraumatic experiences of the East. The writers focused on include Katja Petrowskaja, Olga Grjasnowa, Lena Gorelik, Vladimir Vertlib, and Barbara Honigmann. A central focus of the book is the "traveling of memories" from Eastern Europe and the GDR to (Western) Germany and Austria. Introducing the term "literature of mnemonic migration," Ortner asserts that these authors' writings negotiate the mnemonic divide between East and West. They criticize the normative memory politics of both Germany and the Soviet Union and address not only the politically explosive question of how to remember both National Socialism and Communism but also the status of Jews in contemporary Germany.JESSICA ORTNER is Associate Professor in the Department of English, Germanic, and Romance Studies at the University of Copenhagen.
