    Homer?s 'Odyssey' is one of the most fascinating and popular texts of all time, inspiring not only artists and poets but also generating a massive amount of research. This book focuses for the first time on the 'Odyssey''s reception in late antiquity, the period that witnesses the transformation of classical culture into the world of the middle ages. The epic?s late antique pictorial reception was a selective one. Artists represented but a small canon of topics: Odysseus? encounter with the terrifying one-eyed Cyclops, with the dangerous sorceress Circe, with the bewitching song of the Sirens, and with Scylla the man-eater; a handful of iconographically diverse depictions can be related to the hero?s return to Ithaca that never attracted as much attention as Odysseus? adventures in the course of the wandering. In all cases, the book stresses the close relation between viewer, or context of reception, and specific form of artistic rendering. Depending on context and intended viewer, Odysseus e.g. can be characterized as a person with whom the man in the street can identify, as a problematic and ridiculous figure, or as an example of virtue. Almost all late antique depictions of Odysseus? wanderings have been found - and produced - in the Western provinces of the Roman Empire. In the course of Roman antiquity, the Greek hero and his wanderings had become what they are still: a part of Western cultural identity.00The 'Odyssey''s late antique literary reception was much more multifaceted than the artistic one, as regards topics and geography. In this book, though, the focus will be on those topics that were dealt with in the visual arts, too. Contrasting the late antique pictorial reception with the literary one, and contrasting both with the Homeric epic, reveals the originality of late antiquity?s artists and writers

    Das Verhältnis von Selbsterkenntnis und Erfahrung der Einheit des eigenen und absoluten Grundes ist ein zentraler Gedanke in Plotins Philosophieren. In einer Bewegung des inneren "Aufstiegs" macht das Denken sich sein eigenes Selbst – das denkende Eine in ihm – bewußt. Plotins Imperativ: "Laß ab von Allem" drängt allerdings nicht zu begrifflich blinder Unmittelbarkeit, zu einem irrationalen Sprung ins Absolute, sondern verweist auf den Prozeßcharakter des Philosophierens: am Ende der begreifenden, sich seiner selbst bewußt werdenden, universalen Abstraktionsbewegung steht der Selbstüberstieg des Denkens als dessen höchste Möglichkeit, die ihm aus seinem eigenen Einheitsgrund zukommt. Dieses Buch analysiert diesen Grundgedanken anhand einer eingehenden Interpretation von Plotins Enneade V 3 ("Über die erkennenden Wesenheiten"), übersetzt den griechischen Text neu und erläutert die ihn wesentlich bestimmenden Begriffe und Denkformen. Es arbeitet den geschichtlichen Kontext des Begriffes "Selbsterkenntnis" im Blick auf die platonische Tradition heraus, trägt einiges bei zu einem verantwortbaren Begriff philosophischer Mystik und zeigt implizit auch wichtige Ansatzpunkte für die mittelalterliche und neuzeitliche Diskussion von "Selbstbewußtsein". The relation of self-knowledge and experience of the unity of the self's own and absolute ground is a central thought in the philosophy of Plotinus. In a movement of inner "ascent" thinking becomes aware of its own self – the thinking One in it. Plotin's imperative: "Let go of everything" points to the essentially processual character of philosophizing: at the end of the comprehending self-awareness developing in the course of the universal movement of abstraction stands the self-transgression of thinking as its utmost possibility, coming to it from its own ground of unity. This book analyzes this basic idea on the basis of an in-depth interpretation of Plotinus' Ennead V 3, gives a new translation of the Greek text, and explains the concepts and forms of thought that essentially determine it. It elaborates the historical context of the concept of "self-knowledge" in view of the Platonic tradition, suggests a reasonable concept of philosophical mysticism and highlights important cues for the medieval and modern discussion of "self-consciousness".

    L'obiettivo del presente volume non è solo quello di analizzare e commentare i frammenti poetici superstiti di Teodette di Faselide, nel tentativo di individuare le tematiche da lui principalmente perseguite, ma anche quello di inquadrare in una prospettiva differente rispetto al passato la produzione drammatica post-euripidea. Sulla base di ciò, la prima parte del lavoro, ovvero l'introduzione, si propone di indagare alcuni degli aspetti più significativi della tragedia del IV sec. a.C. (influenza della retorica, panellenismo e antitragicità, ruolo degli attori e del coro, uso dei giochi letterari, importanza di Euripide e indagine sulle fonti). La parte successiva, invece, si concentra specificamente sulla figura di Teodette di Faselide, principale esponente del teatro post-euripideo, i cui frammenti poetici vengono analizzati e commentati nel loro complesso. Il volume, dunque, si propone quale scopo la rivalutazione della produzione drammatica del IV sec., a lungo sottovalutata

    Die Verknüpfung von Alter und Weisheit wird in der antiken paganen und biblischen Literatur so ambivalent beurteilt, dass Zustimmung sowie Ablehnung des Konzepts stets nebeneinander existierten. Während sich die Vorstellung der Altersweisheit in der antiken Literatur als stabil und variabel zugleich erwies, blieb deren systematische Untersuchung in der Forschung bisher lückenhaft. Die Dissertation gibt nicht nur einen Überblick über die Bedeutungsnuancen der antiken Weisheitsvorstellung und die variablen Altersbilder, sondern beschäftigt sich besonders mit der Frage, inwiefern die spätantiken Bischöfe Ambrosius und Paulinus pagane und biblische Traditionen zur Vorstellung der Altersweisheit aufgreifen und zu christlichen Konzepten umarbeiten. Mögliche Kontinuitäten, Modifikationen und Neuerungen im Umgang mit den tradierten Motiven werden so als spezifisch spätantik-christlich eruiert. Beide Bischöfe trugen zur Etablierung der christianisierten Verknüpfung von sapientia und senectus bei, sodass die Konstruktion der Altersweisheit auch in der Spätantike zu einem Stück antiker Geistesgeschichte wurde, anhand derer sich gesellschaftliche und sprachliche, philosophische und religiöse Konventionen, Strömungen und Wandlungen nachzeichnen lassen.

    When we think of Roman Poetry, the names most likely to come to mind are Vergil, Horace, and Ovid, who flourished during the age of Augustus. The genius of Imperial poets such as Juvenal, Martial, and Statius is now generally recognized, but the final years of the Roman Empire are not normally associated with poetic achievement. Recently, however, classical scholars have begun reassessing a number of poets from Late Antiquity—names such as Ausonius, Claudian, and Prudentius—understanding them as artists of considerable talent and influence. In The Space That Remains, Aaron Pelttari offers the first systematic study of these fourth-century poets since Michael Robert's foundational The Jeweled Style (Cornell, 1989). It is the first to give equal attention to both Christian and Pagan poetry and the first to take seriously the issue of readership. Like the Roman Empire, Latin literature was in a state of flux during the fourth century. As Pelttari shows, the period marked a turn towards forms of writing that privilege the reader’s active involvement in shaping the meaning of the text. In the poetry of Ausonius, Claudian, and Prudentius we can see the increasing importance of distinctions between old and new, ancient and modern, forgotten and remembered. The strange traditionalism and verbalism of the day often concealed a desire for immediacy and presence. We can see these changes most clearly in the expectations placed upon readers. The space that remains is the space that the reader comes to inhabit, as would increasingly become the case in the literature of the Latin Middle Ages
