    Der Irrtum ist nicht nur Teil der anthropologischen Grundbestimmung des Menschen und Movens der philosophischen Wahrheitssuche, sondern auch ein wesentliches Element literarischer Gestaltung, etwa als dramaturgisch notwendiger Fehltritt (Hamartia), als ein Überraschung generierendes Ereignis und als Initiator oder Komplize des Zufalls, des Schicksals oder des Unbewussten und Verdrängten. Literarische Figurationen des Irrtums sind auf verschiedenen Ebenen des Erzählens nachweisbar: auf Figuren- und Erzählerebene, in thematischer wie struktureller Hinsicht sowie als poetologisches Prinzip, d.h. etwa im Verhältnis zwischen (ironischem) Text und seinen LeserInnen. Der vorliegende Aufsatzband geht dem Irrtum als ungeplanter Abweichung vom Erwarteten und, damit verbunden, dem kreativen und produktiven Potenzial in seiner literarischen und poetologischen Gestaltung nach. Mit Beiträgen von Frederike Felcht, Henrike Fürstenberg, Hanna Eglinger, Joachim Grage, Dag Heede, Unni Langås, Patrick Ledderose, Stig Olsen, Clemens Räthel, Joachim Schiedermair, Antje Wischmann und Erik Zillen. Making mistakes is not only part of humans’ basic anthropological make-up and the driving force behind the philosophical search for truth, but it is also a significant element in literary framing and design, either as a necessary dramaturgical flaw (hamartia), as an event that causes surprise or as the initiator or accomplice of chance, fate, the subconscious and suppressed memories or thoughts etc. Literary depictions of errors, misjudgements and misconceptions can be found on various narrative levels, such as those of the characters and the narrator, in both a thematic and a structural respect and as a principle in poetics, that is, in the relationship between the (ironic) text and its readers. This collection of essays examines both the concept of ‘errors’ as an unforeseen deviation from what is expected and, in relation to that, the creative and productive potential in its literary framing and design. With contribution by Frederike Felcht, Henrike Fürstenberg, Hanna Eglinger, Joachim Grage, Dag Heede, Unni Langås, Patrick Ledderose, Stig Olsen, Clemens Räthel, Joachim Schiedermair, Antje Wischmann and Erik Zillen.

    Fragmenting Modernism is about Ford Madox Ford, a hero of the modernist literary revolution. Ford is a fascinating and fundamental figure of the time; not only because as a friend and critic of Ezra Pound and Joseph Conrad, editor of the 'English Review', and author of 'The Good Soldier', he shaped the development of literary modernism. But as the grandson of Ford Madox Brown, and son of a German music critic, he also manifested formative links with mainland European culture and the visual arts. In Ford there is the chance to explore continuity in artistic life at the turn of the century, as well as the more commonly identified pattern of crisis in the time. The argument throughout is that modernism possesses more than one face. Setting Ford in his cultural and historical context, the opening chapter debates the concept of fragmentation in modernism; later chapters discuss the notion of the personal narrative, and war writing.     The cultural philosophical analysis of the secularization of the exodus contrasts despotic and emancipatory aspects of psychoanalytic, literary and political adaptations of the biblical myth. Widerstand gegen Unterdrückung und Ausbeutung wird durch physische Abscheu, theoretischen Widerspruch und in einem großen Maß durch Mythen über eine machbare Befreiung animiert. Aus diesem Grund inspiriert die Erzählung des Exodus der Israeliten aus Ägypten auch heute noch dazu, für soziale Gerechtigkeit zu kämpfen. Laurin Mackowitz' Vergleich von Sigmund Freuds, Thomas Manns, Michael Walzers und Paolo Virnos Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Exodus zeigt allerdings, dass dieser Mythos nicht nur zur narrativen Verankerung von Gerechtigkeit und Freiheit, sondern ebenso zur Konstruktion nationaler Identitäten und Legitimierung despotischer Politiken benutzt werden kann.

This is pre-eminently the case in France, where the experience of defeat and occupation created the grounds for a deeply ambiguous mixture of resistance and collaboration, pride and humiliation, heroism and abjection, which writers and politicians have been trying to disentangle ever since. This book develops a theoretical approach which draws on trauma studies and hermeneutics; and it then focuses on some of the intellectuals who lived through the war and on how their experience and troubled memories of it continue to echo through their later writing, even and especially when it is not the explicit topic. This was an astonishing generation of writers who would go on to play a pivotal role on a global scale in post-war aesthetic and philosophical endeavours. The book proposes close readings of works by some of the most brilliant amongst them: Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Charlotte Delbo, Paul Ricoeur, Emmanuel Levinas, Louis Althusser, Jorge Semprun, Elie Wiesel, and Sarah Kofman.

    Mirrors of Entrapment and Emancipation explores the rich diversity of the meanings associated with the mirror and reflection in literature by women on the basis of the works of the Persian Forugh Farrokhzad (1935-1967) and her American contemporary Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). These two poets astutely employed mirror images for the realization as well as for communication of their turbulent psycho-emotional states to their readers, thereby capturing and conveying the essence of women desperately trapped among the antithetical images of twentieth-century womanhood.

The detailed preface contextualises Anna Freud’s literary texts as paradigmatic sources, which are documenting the engagement of a young Austrian Jewish middle class woman with socio-historical and cultural conditions in Fin de siècle Vienna. Die Herausgeberin Brigitte Spreitzer macht die literarischen Texte von Sigmund Freuds jüngster Tochter Anna Freud zum ersten Mal vollständig zugänglich und liest sie in der Einführung zur Edition als paradigmatische Dokumente der Aus-einandersetzung einer jungen Frau aus dem assimilierten jüdischen Bürgertum mit den sozi¬alhistorischen und kulturellen Bedingungen im Wien der Jahrhundertwende. Damit werden sie als Teil eines historischen Prozesses begreifbar gemacht, der durch das Ringen von Frauen um Zutritt zu Kultur, Bildung und Wissen gekennzeichnet ist. So werden Verbindungslinien von Psychoanalyse, Konstruktionen von Weiblichkeit und individuellem Frau¬enleben nachvollziehbar.
