    The complicated junctions negotiated by the novel during the eighteenth century reveal not only achievements but also exclusions. Misfit Forms offers a speculative reconstruction of roads less traveled. What if typographical emphasis and its associated transmission of sensuality and feeling had not lost out to "transparent" typography and its paradigms of sympathetic identification? What was truncated when cumulative narrative structures were declared primitive in relation to the unified teleological plot? What visions of the novel’s value as an arena for experience were sidelined when novel reading was linked to epistemological gain?Reading novels by Sterne, Charlotte Bronte, Defoe, Gaskell, Hardy, and Woolf in tandem with less-known works, Nandrea illuminates the modes and techniques that did not become mainstream. Following Deleuze, Nandrea traces the "dynamic repetitions" of these junctures in the work of later writers. Far from showing the eclipse of primitive modes, such moments of convergence allow us to imagine other possibilities for the novel’s trajectory

    The discussion on the emergence of Empfindsamkeit has tended largely to ignore the lyric poetry of the period, although it may be said to be the first genre to take up and reflect this particular materialization of the Enlightenment. It displays close connections to the religious avant-garde of the period, with Pietist poetry being the first category to manifest tendencies that can genuinely be termed empfindsam. The most prominent poets of this bent are theologians with strong leanings towards Neologism, a religious persuasion reconciling within itself both Pietism and Rationalism and as such legitimately identifiable as the theology of Empfindsamkeit. This volume is the first study to point up these connections. In so doing it sheds new light on the religious roots of Empfindsamkeit and opens up an entirely new perspective on its poetry. Bei der Diskussion um die Entstehung der Empfindsamkeit wird deren Lyrik kaum beachtet, obwohl sie sich dieser Aufklärungsrichtung als erste Gattung öffnet. Die Lyrik verweist auf eine enge Beziehung zur religiösen Avantgarde der Zeit: Als erste entwickelt die Poesie des Pietismus empfindsame Tendenzen. Die wichtigsten empfindsamen Lyriker sind Theologen und sympathisieren mit der Neologie, die sich - zwischen Pietismus und Rationalismus vermittelnd - als Theologie der Empfindsamkeit erweist. What if typographical emphasis and its associated transmission of sensuality and feeling had not lost out to “transparent” typography and its paradigms of sympathetic identification? What was truncated when cumulative narrative structures were declared primitive in relation to the unified teleological plot? What visions of the novel’s value as an arena for experience were sidelined when novel reading was linked to epistemological gain?Reading novels by Sterne, Charlotte Bronte, Defoe, Gaskell, Hardy, and Woolf in tandem with less-known works, Nandrea illuminates the modes and techniques that did not become mainstream. Following Deleuze, Nandrea traces the “dynamic repetitions” of these junctures in the work of later writers. Far from showing the eclipse of primitive modes, such moments of convergence allow us to imagine other possibilities for the novel’s trajectory

    Die Rhetorik als ,Seelenkunst' hat enormen Anteil an der in empfindsamer Literatur ausgestellten so genannten ,natürlichen Seelenaussprache' - ihre Artistik wird als Verbergungskunst ausgestellt. Als ,Rhetorik der Mitte' (mesótes-Ideal) stellt die Empfindsamkeit einen Positivkatalog der Emotionalisierung bereit, denn der Affektstufe ethos wird zugeschrieben, mittels sanfter Affekte zu erfreuen, zu besänftigen und mittels Menschlichkeit Sympathie und Sittlichkeit zu erreichen (Quintilian). Darunter lassen sich insbesondere die integrativen (früh-)aufklärerischen Ausgleichsbestrebungen der Empfindsamkeit fassen, die das ,prodesse et delectare' propagieren und empfindsame Literatur - ,Moderomane' beispielsweise - zwischen Tugendbotschaft und Unterhaltungskunst ansiedeln. Die literarische Empfindsamkeit schlägt eine Brücke zwischen einer Seelenkunst, die im 18. Jahrhundert zu einer subjektiven und individuellen Größe avanciert, und einer Geselligkeit, die den Einzelnen in die Gemeinschaft integrieren soll. Ziel der Studie ist es, durch die strukturelle Verknüpfung von Tugendethos und ,Rhetorik der Mitte' eine rhetorik- und kulturgeschichtlich fundierte Lesart empfindsamer Literatur anzubieten, die den Publikumserfolg ,am und für den Menschen' ebenso zu erklären vermag wie das gleichzeitige Scheitern an den eigenen Vorgaben

    Antje Arnold As a 'rhetoric of the mean' (mesotes ideal), sensibility provides a positive catalog of emotionalization. This is because ethos as an emotional level is viewed as being able, through gentle emotions, to please, placate and achieve sympathy and virtue (Quintilian). Sensibility in literature creates a bridge between an 'art of the soul' that developed into a major subjective and personal factor in the 18th century and a sense of sociability that aimed to integrate the individual into the community.

    Die Rhetorik als ,Seelenkunst' hat enormen Anteil an der in empfindsamer Literatur ausgestellten so genannten ,natürlichen Seelenaussprache' - ihre Artistik wird als Verbergungskunst ausgestellt. Als ,Rhetorik der Mitte' (mesótes-Ideal) stellt die Empfindsamkeit einen Positivkatalog der Emotionalisierung bereit, denn der Affektstufe ethos wird zugeschrieben, mittels sanfter Affekte zu erfreuen, zu besänftigen und mittels Menschlichkeit Sympathie und Sittlichkeit zu erreichen (Quintilian). Darunter lassen sich insbesondere die integrativen (früh-)aufklärerischen Ausgleichsbestrebungen der Empfindsamkeit fassen, die das ,prodesse et delectare' propagieren und empfindsame Literatur - ,Moderomane' beispielsweise - zwischen Tugendbotschaft und Unterhaltungskunst ansiedeln. Die literarische Empfindsamkeit schlägt eine Brücke zwischen einer Seelenkunst, die im 18. Jahrhundert zu einer subjektiven und individuellen Größe avanciert, und einer Geselligkeit, die den Einzelnen in die Gemeinschaft integrieren soll. Ziel der Studie ist es, durch die strukturelle Verknüpfung von Tugendethos und ,Rhetorik der Mitte' eine rhetorik- und kulturgeschichtlich fundierte Lesart empfindsamer Literatur anzubieten, die den Publikumserfolg ,am und für den Menschen' ebenso zu erklären vermag wie das gleichzeitige Scheitern an den eigenen Vorgaben
