    Biographical note: Charlotte Schubert und Alexander Weiß, Universität Leipzig. Das antike Bild der Amazonen wurde bislang zumeist im Rahmen des Geschlechterdiskurses interpretiert. Die Amazonen sind jedoch, wie die Beiträge dieses Tagungsbandes zeigen, in allen literarischen und bildlichen Gattungen durch alle Epochen der Antike geradezu paradigmatisch für die Repräsentation von Gegenbildern in Mythos und Geschichte: eigen-fremd, selbst-anders ebenso wie sesshaft-nomadisch. Sie sind somit Teil ganz allgemeiner Gegenwelten, in denen sich Selbstbild- und Fremdbildkonstruktionen vermischen. Until now, the image of the Amazons that prevailed in classical antiquity has been predominantly interpreted within the framework of gender discourse. However, as the essays in this volume of conference proceedings demonstrate, Amazons have been paradigmatic in all literary and pictorial genres and through all epochs of antiquity as representatives of various contrast in myth and history, including the familiar and alien, self and other, as well as settled and nomadic. As such, they are a part of very generalized alternative worlds in which constructions of the self and images of the other are co-mingled.

    "Our secret, inner, sense of self - what we feel makes us distinctively 'us' - seems a natural and permanent part of being human, yet in fact it is surprisingly new. Over the last 2,000 years we have increasingly felt old sources of identity, such as family, tribe, or social status, as intensely personal, even unique to us. Confessional religious writings and novels, from Augustine to Jane Austen, or diaries even of 20th-century holocaust victims, took the same path to self-discovery and exploration inwards - as did the cinema. Artistic realism began with internalization. In the last few centuries our inner space has expanded far beyond any possible personal experience. Our knowledge of history, other cultures, the world, and the cosmos, and has vastly enhanced our capacity not merely to write about what we have never seen, but even to create fantasies and impossible fictions around them. Yet our secret selves can also be a source of terror. Dreamers and visionaries often fear rather than delight in what they have uncovered. We all have specific nightmares. Identity theft has a long history - going back at least to 15th century Florence. Mystics and poets, from Dante to Newman or Hopkins, sought God in their secret spaces not least because they feared the 'abyss beneath'. The medieval three-storey universe reappears in modern psychoanalysis. The fringes of our secret selves are often porous, ill-defined, and, if some wilder prophecies of cyborgs or reincarnation have any validity, open to frightening forms of external control"--

Eva Georg liefert hierzu eine Analyse der Konstitution des (neo-)liberalen Subjekts im Kontext einer »Therapeutisierung der Gesellschaft«. Unter Bezugnahme auf Michel Foucault, die Quantenphysikerin Karen Barad und die buddhistische Philosophie nimmt sie eine Neuverhandlung der Frage nach der »Arbeit am Selbst« vor. Dabei adressiert sie ethische und feministische Debatten um die Relationalität von Subjektivität ebenso wie eine postkoloniale Perspektivierung westlicher Buddhismus-Rezeptionen - und liefert einen innovativen Beitrag für das noch junge Feld der Beratungswissenschaften, den Neuen Kritischen Materialismus sowie die Praxis von Psychotherapie, Beratung und Coaching.

    This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to concepts of the self associated with the development of humanism in England, and to strategies for both inclusion and exclusion in structuring the early modern nation state. It addresses writings about rhetoric and behavior from 1495-1660, beginning with Erasmus' work on sermo or the conversational rhetoric between friends, which considers the reader as an 'absent audience', and following the transference of this stance to a politics whose broadening democratic constituency needed a legitimate structure for governance-at-a-distance. Unusually, the book brings together the impact on behavior of these new concepts about rhetoric, with the growth of the publishing industry, and the emergence of capitalism and of modern medicine. It explores the effects on the formation of the 'subject' and political legitimation of the early liberal nation state. It also lays new ground for scholarship concerned with what is left out of both selfhood and politics by that state, studying examples of a parallel development of the 'self' defined by friendship not only from educated male writers, but also from women writers and writers concerned with socially 'middling' and laboring people and the poor.--Publisher description
