    Eine Betrachtung des Rhythmus von Leben und Zeit aus den sehr unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln östlicher und westlicher Philosophie und Kultur. Der Rhythmus liegt, geht man nach der landläufigen Bedeutung dieses bis heute wirkmächtigen antiken Begriffs, in der schönen Gestaltung, der gelungenen Formgebung, dem ästhetischen Schwung. Doch es gab in der langen Begriffsgeschichte immer auch andere, weniger auf das Ästhetische gerichtete Vorstellungen vom Rhythmus: Solche, die man heute eher unter Bezeichnungen wie Prozessualität, Achtsamkeit, Flow verbucht und mit einem Modus der Teilhabe und des Mitseins assoziieren kann. Die Wertschätzung für diesen lebensnäheren Rhythmus verbanden Dichter deutscher Sprache um 1900 wie Rainer Maria Rilke und Hugo von Hofmannsthal vor allem mit dem Fernen Osten. Rhythmische Erfahrung lässt sich daran anschließend als eine Art Achtsamkeit für den allen Veränderungen innewohnenden Fluss von Beziehungen verstehen. Diese »west-östliche« Rhythmus-Vorstellung erlaubt es nicht nur, die Begriffsgeschichte der Ästhetik um 1900 um einen bislang vernachlässigten Grundaspekt zu erweitern. Sie birgt außerdem ein hohes Potenzial für die heutige literatur- und kunstwissenschaftliche Theoriebildung zum Thema »Zeit und Darstellung«.

Beiträge von Samuel Weber, Ulrike Haß, Esa Kirkkopleto und anderen untersuchen die ästhetische und politische Dimension von Rhythmus in Theater, Literatur, Musik und Film. Émile Benveniste nennt den Rhythmus »die improvisierte, momentane und veränderliche Form«. Rhythmus entsteht durch Unterbrechungen, durch Abstände und Differenzen; erst als Rhythmus kann ein gemeinsamer Zeitraum sinnlich wahrnehmbar werden. Theorien des Politischen sind seit Plato fast ausnahmslos implizite Theorien des Rhythmus. Deshalb ist wiederum eine Reflexion des Rhythmus nötig, um das Politische der Kunst – und insbesondere des Theaters – neu zu denken. In Hölderlins Texten zur Tragödie, bei Sophokles, Kleist, Novalis, Benjamin, Rilke, Rossellini, Deleuze/Guattari und im Theater der Gegenwart suchen die Autorinnen und Autoren des Bandes nach den Formen des Unbeständigen

    This book shows how rhythm constitutes an untapped resource for understanding poetry. Intervening in recent debates over formalism, historicism, and poetics, the authors show how rhythm is at once a defamiliarizing aesthetic force and an unstable concept. Distinct from the related terms to which it’s often assimilated—scansion, prosody, meter—rhythm makes legible a range of ways poetry affects us that cannot be parsed through the traditional resources of poetic theory.Rhythm has rich but also problematic roots in still-lingering nineteenth-century notions of primitive, oral, communal, and sometimes racialized poetics. But there are reasons to understand and even embrace its seductions, including its resistance to lyrical voice and even identity. Through exploration of rhythm’s genealogies and present critical debates, the essays consistently warn against taking rhythm to be a given form offering ready-made resources for interpretation. Pressing beyond poetry handbooks’ isolated descriptions of technique or inductive declarations of what rhythm "is," the essays ask what it means to think rhythm.Rhythm, the contributors show, happens relative to the body, on the one hand, and to language, on the other—two categories that are distinct from the literary, the mode through which poetics has tended to be analyzed. Beyond articulating what rhythm does to poetry, the contributors undertake a genealogical and theoretical analysis of how rhythm as a human experience has come to be articulated through poetry and poetics. The author first introduces the philosophical, neurological, anthropological, and aesthetic aspects of the subject in historical perspective, then focuses on rhetoric and introduces a tension between the small and large issues of rhythm. He thereupon turns his attention to the roles of breathing in poetry--as a life-and-death matter, with attention to beats and walking poems. This opens onto technical concepts from the classical traditions of rhetoric and philology. Turning to the relationship between prosody and motion, he considers both animals and human beings as both ostensibly able-bodied creatures and presumptively disabled ones. Finally, he looks at dancing and writing as aspects of walking and talking, with special attention to motion in Arabic and Chinese calligraphy. The final chapters of the book provide a series of interrelated representative case studies"--

Intervening in recent debates over formalism, historicism, and poetics, the authors show how rhythm is at once a defamiliarizing aesthetic force and an unstable concept. Distinct from the related terms to which it’s often assimilated—scansion, prosody, meter—rhythm makes legible a range of ways poetry affects us that cannot be parsed through the traditional resources of poetic theory.Rhythm has rich but also problematic roots in still-lingering nineteenth-century notions of primitive, oral, communal, and sometimes racialized poetics. But there are reasons to understand and even embrace its seductions, including its resistance to lyrical voice and even identity. Through exploration of rhythm’s genealogies and present critical debates, the essays consistently warn against taking rhythm to be a given form offering ready-made resources for interpretation. Pressing beyond poetry handbooks’ isolated descriptions of technique or inductive declarations of what rhythm “is,” the essays ask what it means to think rhythm.Rhythm, the contributors show, happens relative to the body, on the one hand, and to language, on the other—two categories that are distinct from the literary, the mode through which poetics has tended to be analyzed. Beyond articulating what rhythm does to poetry, the contributors undertake a genealogical and theoretical analysis of how rhythm as a human experience has come to be articulated through poetry and poetics.
