    Wallace Stevens once described the "malady of the quotidian," lamenting the dull weight of everyday regimen. Yet he would later hail "that which is always beginning, over and over"¿recognizing, if not celebrating, the possibility of fresh invention. Focusing on the poems of Wallace Stevens, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, and James Merrill, Siobhan Phillips positions everyday time as a vital category in modernist aesthetics, American literature, and poetic theory. She eloquently reveals how, through particular but related means, each of these poets converts the necessity of quotidian experience into an aesthetic and experiential opportunity. In Stevens, Phillips analyzes the implications of cyclic dualism. In Frost, she explains the theoretical depth of a habitual "middle way." In Bishop's work, she identifies the attempt to turn recurrent mornings into a "ceremony" rather than a sentence, and in Merrill, she shows how cosmic theories rely on daily habits. Phillips ultimately demonstrates that a poetics of everyday time contributes not only to a richer understanding of these four writers but also to descriptions of their era, estimations of their genre, and ongoing reconfigurations of the issues that literature reflects and illuminates

    Herhaling speelt een centrale rol in menselijke cultuuruitingen. Slaap - liedjes en smeekbeden, protesten en strijdkreten: van de wieg tot het graf begeleidt de herhaling de essentiële gebeurtenissen in het leven. Maar in een wereld die zelf voortdurend in beweging is, kan van zuivere herhaling geen sprake zijn. Je kunt onmogelijk tweemaal in dezelfde rivier stappen. Dat geldt ook in literatuur en kunst, waar herhaling veelvuldig wordt ingezet als artistiek middel. Daarbij is juist het verschil van essentieel belang. Maar wat is precies de aard van dat verschil?     "Non nova, sed nove," this Latin proverb, which means "not new, but new," invites us to see repetition as an end in itself. Life itself is a perpetual repetition. Paradoxically, the only experience that has no chance of being repeated is death. Does this mean that repetition is a part of life and, in turn, of the imaginary? What are the modalities of repetition in literary texts? As a creative process, in what ways does repetition work? What is the intentionality of repetition? This edited collection includes sixteen studies that explore these questions by undertaking long-awaited interdisciplinary analyses of repetition in the French-language literature of four periods of history: the Middle Ages, the Ancien Régime, and the modern and contemporary epochs. This diachronic approach allows us to explore stylistic constants, variations, repetitions and innovations. The different perspectives of the authors, guided by their respective fields of expertise, create a synergy that stimulates reflection around the notion of repetition in French and French texts

Through close readings of the comics My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris, The Black Project by Gareth Brookes, The Generous Bosom series by Conor Stechschulte, Sabrina by Nick Drnaso, and Panther by Brecht Evens, Perfect Copies shows how these comics makers push the limits of different ideas of "reproduction" in strikingly different ways.     "Music abounds in twentieth- century Irish literature. Whether it be the "thought-tormented" music of Joyce's "The Dead", the folk tunes and opera that resound throughout Ulysses, or the four- part threnody in Beckett's Watt, it is clear that the influence of music on the written word in Ireland is deeply significant. Samuel Beckett arguably went further than any other writer in the incorporation of musical ideas into his work. Musical quotations inhabit his texts, and structural devices such as the da capo are metaphorically employed. Perhaps most striking is the erosion of explicit meaning in Beckett's later prose brought about through an extensive use of repetition, influenced by his reading of Schopenhauer's philosophy of music. Exploring this notion of "semantic fluidity", John McGrath discusses the ways in which Beckett utilised extreme repetition to create texts that operate and are received more like music. Beckett's writing has attracted the attention of numerous contemporary composers and an investigation into how this Beckettian "musicalised fiction" has been retranslated into contemporary music forms the second half of the book. Close analyses of the Beckett- inspired music of experimental composer Morton Feldman and the structured improvisations of avantjazz guitarist Scott Fields illustrate the cross- genre appeal of Beckett to musicians, but also demonstrate how repetition operates in diverse ways.
