    Ausgehend von Goethes »Augengespenstern« und dem sich in ihnen artikulierenden epistemischen Umbruch im Verhältnis von Wahrnehmung und Wirklichkeit untersucht die Studie Wahrnehmung als grundlegendes Darstellungs- und Experimentierfeld der Literatur des Realismus. Wie die Lektüren der Inszenierung von Wahrnehmung bei Stifter, Storm und Fontane zeigen, erweist sich Wahrnehmung nicht nur als konstitutiv für Wirklichkeit, sondern überdies als Schauplatz eines Gespenstischen. Die Gespenster des Realismus – so die These – sind Gespenster der Moderne. Nicht nur situieren die Wahrnehmungsgespenster Realismus in epistemischen Formationen der Moderne; aus ihrem Bezug zum Gespenstischen generieren realistische Texte zudem eine moderne Poetologie. Die Studie eruiert diese Poetologie des Realismus anhand eines breiten Spektrums von Darstellungsweisen: Formen von Serialität, Wiederkehr und déjà vu, Aggregate, unheimliche Stellen, Nuancen, Rahmensprünge, Techniken der Mimikry, mise en abyme-Strukturen und szenische Akte erweisen sich als Verfahren zur literarischen Wahrnehmung von Wirklichkeit. Das Wirkliche, das sich in einem solchen Wahrnehmungsapparat generiert, ist prekär: Gespenstisches macht sich als Wirklichkeitseffekt geltend, Wirkliches stellt sich als Simulakrum dar. Es scheint m.a.W., dass sich Realismus gerade dadurch auszeichnet, dass ihm ›Wirklichkeit‹ epistemologisch radikal problematisch geworden ist.

Mit Hilfe einer Untersuchung sowohl kanonisierter als auch bisher kaum berücksichtigter Texte (von Wilhelm Raabe, Theodor Fontane, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach und Balduin Möllhausen) zeigt er, wie sich der Realismus im intermedialen Spannungsfeld seiner Zeit positioniert und durch ein permanentes Hinterfragen der eigenen Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen ein Reflexionswissen produziert, das zur kritischen Beobachtung der entstehenden Massenmedien beiträgt

    This book intends to examine the films of João Canijo and their ties to representations of national identity. For that purpose, we did a review of literature on Portuguese cultural identity in its diverse dimensions (historical, literary and anthropological), focusing on the importance of Salazar’s ideology and the current identity debates. In the second part of this thesis, we try to analyse eight feature films made by the director, proposing the idea of a dramaturgy of violence, through intertextuality with Greek tragedy and film melodrama, which gives a perspective of a representation of contemporary Portugal, based on a patriarchal society and its violence. We argue the importance of concepts such as non-inscription, by José Gil, or the repressed, by Eduardo Lourenço, to comprehend the films. At last, our analysis debates the issue of realism in cinema, through the prism of contemporary changes suggested by the work of the filmmaker, which fuses fictional and documentary elements. Finally, we suggest a type of dramaturgy of violence in João Canijo’s films that try to question the existing images of Portuguese identity and its cultural representations. Este livro pretende analisar a obra de João Canijo e a sua relação com as representações da identidade nacional. Para isso, socorre-se de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a identidade cultural portuguesa, em diversas dimensões (histórica, literária e antropológica), ressaltando, sobretudo, a importância da ideologia salazarista e a tensão identitária da situação atual. Na segunda parte, o livro ensaia uma análise a oito longas-metragens do realizador, propondo a ideia de uma dramaturgia da violência, através de uma intertextualidade com a tragédia grega e o melodrama cinematográfico, que pretende dar conta de um imaginário português contemporâneo, que se baseia numa sociedade patriarcal e na sua violência. Nesse sentido, argumenta-se a importância de conceitos como a não-inscrição, de José Gil, ou o recalcado, de Eduardo Lourenço, para a compreensão dos filmes. Num último momento, esta análise percorre o debate do realismo no cinema, através do prisma das mudanças contemporâneas sugeridas pela obra do cineasta, em que se destaca uma hibridez entre elementos ficcionais e documentais. Sugere-se, finalmente, uma dramaturgia da violência nos filmes de João Canijo que procura rever o imaginário existente no que diz respeito à identidade portuguesa e às suas representações culturais.

    East German science fiction enabled its authors to create a subversive space in another time and place. One of the country’s most popular genres, it outlined futures that often went beyond the party’s official version. Many utopian stories provided a corrective vision, intended to preserve and improve upon East German communism. This study is an introduction to East German science fiction. The book begins with a chapter on German science fiction before 1949. It then spans the entire existence of the country (1949-1990) and outlines key topics essential to understanding the genre: popular literature, socialist realism, censorship, fandom, and international science fiction. An in-depth discussion addresses notions of high and low literature, elements of the fantastic and utopia as critical narrative strategies, ideology and realism in East German literature, gender, and the relation between literature and science. Through a close textual analysis of three science fiction novels, the author expands East German literary history to include science fiction as a valuable source for developing a multi-faceted understanding of the country’s short history. Finally, an epilogue notes new titles and developments since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Event of the Thing is the most complete examination to date of Derrida's understanding of thinghood and its crucial role in psychoanalysis, ethics, literary theory, aesthetics, and Marxism. Arguing that the thing, as a figure of otherness, destabilizes the metaphysical edifice it underlies, Michael Marder reveals the contributions it makes to critiques of humanism and idealism. Subsequently, the new realism that emerges from deconstruction holds the possibility of an event that problematizes all attempts to objectify the thing.     Between 1850 and 1940, with the rise of managerial capitalism in the United States, the most powerful businesses ceased to be family owned, instead becoming sprawling organizations controlled by complex bureaucracies. Sentimental literature—work written specifically to convey and inspire deep feeling—does not seem to fit with a swiftly bureaucratizing society. Surprisingly, though, sentimental language persisted in American literature, even as a culture of managed systems threatened to obscure the power of individual affect.The Sentimental Touch explores the strange, enduring power of sentimental language in the face of a rapidly changing culture. Analyzing novels by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Sherwood Anderson, and Nathanael West, the book demonstrates that sentimental language changes but remains powerful, even in works by authors who self-consciously write against the sentimental tradition. Sentimental language has an afterlife, enduring in American literature long after authors and critics declared it dead, insisting that human feeling can resist a mechanizing culture and embodying, paradoxically, the way that literary conventions themselves become mechanical and systematic

    Untouchable Fictions considers the crisis of literary realism- progressive, rural, regionalist, experimental- in order to derive a literary genealogy for the recent explosion of Dalit ("untouchable" caste) fiction. Drawing on a wide array of fiction from Premchand and Renu in Hindi to Mulk Raj Anand and V.S. Naipaul in English, Gajarawala illuminates the dark side of realist complicity: a hidden aesthetics and politics of caste. How does caste color the novel? What are its formal tendencies? What generic constraints does it produce? Untouchable Fictions juxtaposes the Dalit text, and its radical critique, with a history of progressive literary movements in South Asia. Gajarawala reads Dalit writing dialectically, doing justice to its unique and groundbreaking literary interventions while also demanding that it be read as an integral moment in the literary genealogy of the 20th and 21st century. How might we trace the origins of the rise of Dalit fiction in the critical "realism" of the Progressive Writers Association of the 1930s, or in the gaps laid bare by the peasant novel of the 1950s? And what kind of dialogue does "untouchable caste" writing with its more famous counterpart: the Anglophone fiction of the last few decades? Under Gajarawala’s lens the aesthetic languages of Hindi and English are intertwined and caste becomes a central category of literary analysis. This book, grounded in the fields of postcolonial theory, South Asian literatures, and cultural studies will be important for all readers interested in the problematic relations between aesthetics and politics, between social movements and cultural production. Engaged as it is with contemporary theories of realism and the problem of aesthetics, it would also be of interest to students of English, comparative literature, contemporary Third World literature, and historians of literary movements. More specifically, as a text that considers recent developments in genre theory and South Asian fiction, it would interest scholars of the Indian and Indian Anglophone novel. Finally, this project, as an interrogation of caste politics in the cultural sphere, is an important contribution to the burgeoning field of Dalit studies
