    Lucifer's readings in the nonkaige section -- Lucifer's readings in the kaige section -- Text-historical conclusions "The textual history of the Hebrew Bible is complex, and the books of 1 and 2 Kings present one of the most challenging cases. Together with Hebrew and Greek sources, the Latin witnesses are of utmost importance. A useful fourth-century Latin witness is Lucifer of Cagliari, who in his writings extensively quotes from Kings and occasionally includes readings that go back to now-lost Greek and Hebrew texts. In this book, Tuukka Kauhanen compares Lucifer's quotations with all known textual material for Kings. In addition to establishing Lucifer's position as one of the best textual witnesses, the study resolves a number of problems concerning the oldest form of the text of the Books of Kings" --

    Bemerkung(en):

    JPS first published Pathways Through the Bible in 1946, selling over 250,000 copies. It featured selections from the 1917 translation of the JPS Tanakh, "bridged" by narrative summaries written by Rabbi Cohen. Rabbi Stein has replaced the 1917 JPS translation with the 1985 translation and has updated the prose and made the language gender-sensitive. This new edition shares the same essential features as the original, especially the core principle that Pathways Through the Bible, in Cohen's words, "is not intended to replace The Holy Scriptures...it is rather to be regarded as preparatory to the reading of the Bible itself...Its purpose is to open for you pathways into the magic realm of the greatest literature ever written."

Apocalyptic melancholia and 9/11

    This study addresses the way in which a psychoanalytic model of mourning relates to a set of Jewish apocalypses concerned with the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple. These texts respond to the traumatic symbolic loss of Zion and attempt to heal it through the apocalyptic narrative, the visionary experiences of the seers, and the emotional transformation that results from the interplay of the two. The seers react with rage, paralysis, and self-annihilating sentiments, and hence these texts resemble incomplete, stalled mourning, or melancholia. Through the course of their narratives and a

    This volume deals with the poetic framework and material content of the Second and Third Books of the Psalter (Psalms 42-72 and 73-89). It is a continuation of the Psalms Project started in OTS 53 (2006). Formal and thematic devices demonstrate that the psalms are composed of a consistent pattern of cantos (stanzas) and strophes. The formal devices include quantitative balance on the level of cantos in terms of the number of verselines, verbal repetitions and transition markers. A quantitative structural approach also helps to identify the focal message of the poems. Introductions to the desig

    The Mudil Codex from the late 4th century contains the Biblical Psalms in Coptic. However, the text differs significantly from familiar versions of the Psalms, giving rise to the question of whether we are dealing with an original form of the text. The comprehensive analysis presented here demonstrates the tradition in which this fascinating text is located, how it arose, and what significance it has for research into the Psalms generally and the Coptic Bible manuscripts in particular

    War is not only waged on the battlefield, but is written and read in contexts that influence meaning and reception. The essays in this collection examine how ancient Israelites wrote about war and how war-related texts in the Hebrew Bible have been read in ancient and modern contexts. They explore writing and reading war in contexts ranging from ancient Israel to early Judaism to contemporary Christianity. The contributors apply a variety of historical, literary, and comparative methods to biblical texts and present new perspectives on the rhetoric, gender, and ethics of war. A foreword by Susan Niditch and introduction by Victor H. Matthews offer a literature review of recent major works in this field and orient readers to past research and future directions for the study of the discourse and realities of war. --From publisher's description

    Eschewing both so-called minimalist and maximalist readings, this volume advocates an understanding of the book of Samuel as ancient narrative historiography that must be understood according to its own conception and ideology of history before being judged as a historical source. This study shows how narrative strategies and literary embellishment, unaccustomed in modern historiography, are used to express familiar historical concepts such as causation, meaning and evaluation of the past. The requirements for historical accuracy within the book 's cultural milieu are investigated through anal

    There is surely nothing more numinous or pivotal in life than the experience of death and mortality, and it is necessary for culture and religion to deal with this experience as adequately as possible. Moreover, the treatment of persons dying, the care of corpses, and also hopes in a "life" or a comparable "existence" after death often form decisive keys to the understanding of anthropological presuppositions of the respective social, cultural and religious contexts. The articles in this volume deal with the following questions: What role does human corporality play in the context of dying, death, and resurrection in ancient Judaism, early Christianity and in their respective religious and cultural contexts? What conclusions do the statements about the body, but also the dealing with the body allow regarding the respective anthropological ideas in concrete social, cultural and religious contexts? The main focus of the volume lies on early Jewish and ancient Christian texts of the 3rd century B.C.E. until the 3rd century C.E. Some essays, however, deal with other traditions like the religion of Ptolemaic Egypt, Zoroastrism or ancient Gnosis

    The myths of Genesis are the foundation for hundreds of texts written at later diachronically distinct and datable periods. Seven texts-Genesis itself, Genesis Rabbah, Pirke deRabbi Eliezer and mediaeval compilations-are examined here, with five interrelated questions in focus: Can structuralist theory be applied usefully to societies conscious of history and change?
