    Disputation literature is a type of text in which usually two non-human entities (such as trees, animals, drinks, or seasons) try to establish their superiority over each other by means of a series of speeches written in an elaborate, flowery register. As opposed to other dialogue literature, in disputation texts there is no serious matter at stake only the preeminence of one of the litigants over its rival. These light-hearted texts are known in virtually every culture that flourished in the Middle East from Antiquity to the present day, and they constitute one of the most enduring genres in world literature. The present volume collects over twenty contributions on disputation literature by a diverse group of world-renowned scholars. From ancient Sumer to modern-day Bahrain, from Egyptian to Neo-Aramaic, including Latin, French, Middle English, Armenian, Chinese and Japanese, the chapters of this book study the multiple avatars of this venerable text type

    Wie kann anschaulich von vor dem Tod unerfahrbaren Räumen wie der Hölle, dem Fegefeuer oder dem Paradies erzählt werden? Die Monographie nimmt die Gattung der Jenseitsreisen in den Blick und beginnt mit einer Analyse der Jenseitsreise des Apostels Paulus (2 Kor 12,2-4). An diesen Text schließt die apokryphe Paulus-Apokalypse an, deren Jenseitserzählung sich signifikant von der der früheren Petrus-Apokalypse unterscheidet. Um das Verhältnis der beiden Apokalypsen zu klären, wird das sich in der frühjüdischen Tradition herausbildende Erzählverfahren der Jenseitsreise rekonstruiert. Ein zweiter Blick auf die frühchristlichen Apokalypsen zeigt, dass anders als in der Petrus-Apokalypse, die sich auf die pagan-antiken ›spectacula‹ bezieht, in der Paulus-Apokalypse dieses Erzählverfahren konsequent umgesetzt wird. Auf die Analyse frühmittelalterlicher Entwürfe folgt die Untersuchung der suggestiv erzählenden Visio Tnugdali und des Tractatus de Purgatorio S. Patricii, der nicht nur auf komplexe Weise die Patrickslegende voraussetzt, sondern seine eigene Medialität unter Rekurs auf den viktorinischen Symbolismus reflektiert: Das anschaulich erzählte Jenseits wird als ›lesbar‹ in Hinsicht auf eine nichtsichtbare Wirklichkeit verstanden, die es bezeichnet. Am Ende der Arbeit steht die Visio Thurkilli, gleichsam eine ›summa visionum‹
