    When political theorists teach the history of political philosophy, they typically skip from the ancient Greeks and Cicero to Augustine in the fifth century and Thomas Aquinas in the thirteenth, and then on to the origins of modernity with Machiavelli and beyond. Paul Stern aims to change this settled narrative and makes a powerful case for treating Dante Alighieri, arguably the greatest poet of medieval Christendom, as a political philosopher of the first rank.In Dante's Philosophical Life, Stern argues that Purgatorio's depiction of the ascent to Earthly Paradise, that is, the summit of Mount Purgatory, was intended to give instruction on how to live the philosophic life, understood in its classical form as "love of wisdom." As an object of love, however, wisdom must be sought by the human soul, rather than possessed. But before the search can be undertaken, the soul needs to consider from where it begins: its nature and its good. In Stern's interpretation of Purgatorio, Dante's intense concern for political life follows from this need, for it is law that supplies the notions of good that shape the soul's understanding and it is law, especially its limits, that provides the most evident display of the soul's enduring hopes.According to Stern, Dante places inquiry regarding human nature and its good at the heart of philosophic investigation, thereby rehabilitating the highest form of reasoned judgment or prudence. Philosophy thus understood is neither a body of doctrines easily situated in a Christian framework nor a set of intellectual tools best used for predetermined theological ends, but a way of life. Stern's claim that Dante was arguing for prudence against dogmatisms of every kind addresses a question of contemporary concern: whether reason can guide a life

Drawing on the author's training in both classics and medieval studies, the book explores how mythic narrative reflects ideas about ancient and medieval empires and engages with debates about the nature of the classical tradition as it evolved during the Middle Ages. Spence argues that the narrative structure of the Proserpina myth, the history of Sicily, and ideas about empire come to reflect, refract, and refine one another through literature, including works by Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Claudian, and Dante. More broadly, Spence considers the way in which literature offers a space for political deliberation and imagination. While Roman poets focus on Proserpina's abduction as a means for discussing the problems of imperial expansion, for example, high medieval renderings of the myth-invoked in discussions of a new Christian empire shaped by the Crusades-instead focus on the loss of Proserpina, her eventual return, and the necessary negotiations her return involves.     This book is a major re-appraisal of the Commedia as originally envisaged by Dante: as a work of ethics. Privileging the ethical, Corbett increases our appreciation of Dante's eschatological innovations and literary genius. Drawing upon a wider range of moral contexts than in previous studies, this book presents an overarching account of the complex ordering and political programme of Dante's afterlife. Balancing close readings with a lucid overview of Dante's Commedia as an ethical and political manifesto, Corbett cogently approaches the poem through its moral structure. The book provides detailed interpretations of three particularly significant vices - pride, sloth, and avarice - and the three terraces of Purgatory devoted to them. While scholars register Dante's explicit confession of pride, the volume uncovers Dante's implicit confession of sloth and prodigality (the opposing subvice of avarice) through Statius, his moral cypher.

    Klappentext: Warum noch Dantes 'Divina Commedia', Summa des Mittelalters und katholisch-christliches Heilsepos, in einem sich als vollständig säkularisiert begreifenden Literatursystem? Die Studie zeigt, wie die Autoren des Spätrealismus die fragmentarische Aneignung von Dantes Werk und die säkulare Replik auf diesen in den Vordergrund stellen. Der Rekurs auf Dante avanciert zum Spiel mit scholastischen Utopien und zum Metacode einer sich selbst verzehrenden bürgerlichen Gesellschaft. Mit gleichzeitigem Bezug auf außerliterarische Wissenssysteme legt das Buch die ungebrochene Produktivität der dantesk-christlichen Raumdarstellungen und die poetisch-realistische Nacherzählung der grenzüberschreitenden Lebenswanderung durch die drei Jenseitsreiche offen. Klappentext engl.: Why is Dante's Divine Comedy, summa of the Middle Ages and a Catholic-Christian epic of salvation, still relevant in a literary system that sees itself as completely secularised? This study shows how the authors of late German realism focus on the fragmentary appropriation of Dante’s work and the secular response to it. The recourse to Dante advances towards playing with scholastic utopias and becomes a meta code of a self-consuming bourgeois society. With simultaneous references to extra-literary systems of knowledge, this book exposes the unbroken productivity of Dante’s Christian representations of space and the poetic–realist retelling of life’s transgressive wanderings through the three realms beyond our own.
