    "In this first systematic comparative study of Cuba and Puerto Rico from both a historical and contemporary perspective, contributors highlight the interconnectedness of the two archipelagos and encourage a more nuanced and multifaceted study of the relationships between the islands and their diasporas"-- "The intertwined stories of two archipelagos and their diasporas This volume is the first systematic comparative study of Cuba and Puerto Rico from both a historical and contemporary perspective. In these essays, contributors highlight the interconnectedness of the two archipelagos in social categories such as nation, race, class, and gender to encourage a more nuanced and multifaceted study of the relationships between the islands and their diasporas. Topics range from historical and anthropological perspectives on Cuba and Puerto Rico before and during the Cold War to cultural and sociological studies of diasporic communities in the United States. The volume features analyses of political coalitions, the formation of interisland sororities, and environmental issues. Along with sharing a similar early history, Cuba and Puerto Rico have closely intertwined cultures, including their linguistic, literary, food, musical, and religious practices. Contributors also discuss literature by Cuban and Puerto Rican authors by examining the aesthetics of literary techniques and discourses, the representation of psychological space on the stage, and the impacts of migration. Showing how the trajectories of both archipelagos have been linked together for centuries and how they have diverged recently, Cuba and Puerto Rico offers a transdisciplinary approach to the study of this intricate relationship and the formation of diasporic communities and continuities.     "L'île de Porto Rico découverte par Christophe Colomb en 1493 et colonisée par la Monarchie espagnole n'est pas devenue indépendante dans les premières décennies du XIXe siècle - à l'instar de la plupart des pays de l'Amérique Centrale et de l'Amérique du Sud -. Comme Cuba elle est restée dans le giron de l'Espagne jusqu'à l'aube du XXe siècle avant de passer sous la domination des États-Unis. 1952 est une date clé dans l'histoire de ce pays qui adopte alors le statut d'État libre Associé au grand et puissant voisin ce qui est toujours d'actualité. Des référendums successifs n'ont pas permis de clarifier la situation politique du pays et parvenir à l'annexion de l'île. La proximité des États-Unis a fortement favorisé l'émigration vers ce pays souvent des plus pauvres -. Une importante diaspora portoricaine y vit désormais alors que l'île s'est dépeuplée au fil du temps. L'évolution particulière de cette nation a eu des conséquences sur son développement social et culturel. Privés de racines préhispaniques du fait de la disparition de la population indienne, les Portoricains - après l'invasion nord-américaine et l'imposition de la langue anglaise - ont renoué (presque par défaut) avec leur passé hispanique pour fédérer leur force. Et, c'est ce flottement que va être analysé dans ce livre (sous l'aspect linguistique et littéraire) par des universitaires de la métropole et des universitaires portoricains travaillant aux États-Unis ou qui vivent à Porto Rico."--Page 4 of cover
