    The book is the first monograph which examines the correspondences between the oeuvre of Jack Kerouac and the thought of Jacques Lacan, the two apparently incompatible worlds which prove to be complementary when taking a closer look. The study demonstrates a number of points. Firstly, with Jacques Lacan as a silent partner, it helps to better understand why psychoanalysis won Kerouac’s enmity in the mid-1950s. It also delves into Lacan’s reflections on spontaneous free-association to prove their convergence with Beats’ literary tactics. In its final part, by employing Lacanian theory, the book offers an extensive insight into Kerouac’s oeuvre to excavate the problematic status of the father figure, a crucial matter not yet given a rigorous critical attention.

    This book analyses a cultural phenomenon that goes to the very roots of Western civilization: the centrality of death in our sense of human existence. It does so through a close reading of seminal works by the most creative authors of modern French thought, such as Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Lacan, and Jacques Derrida. These works encode an entire ethics of postmodernism. Betty Rojtman offers the reader a prism through which to see anew the key issues of the twentieth century: tragedy, finitude, nothingness—but also contestation, liberty, and sovereignty. Little by little we understand that this fascination with death may be just the other side of humankind’s great protest, its thirst for the infinite and its desire to be. Finally, Rojtman tries to offer another view on these fundamental questions by shifting to a parallel cultural reference: Kabbalah.

    This study analyses the representation of Durbanite and Capetonian urban spaces in the following selection of post-apartheid works: Mariam Akabor's ''Flat 9'', Rozena Maart's ''Rosa's District Six'', Johan van Wyk's ''Man Bitch'', K. Sello Duiker's ''Thirteen Cents'', Bridget McNulty's ''Strange Nervous Laughter'', and Lauren Beukes' ''Moxyland''. The focus lies on the interrelatedness of shifting post-apartheid subjectivities and urban space (and place) in these literary works. The analysis not only grants access to different ‘new voices' of post-apartheid literature, it also sheds light on the perception of South African history, urban geography, and cultural topography – essentially, on real as well as imagined South African urban spaces – as the literary representations of city-spaces become archives of cultural transformation processes; a gateway to the understanding of the developments and changes of, and within, the two cities in question.

    Das Wort 'Narzissmus' ist in aller Munde. Der gängige Diskurs geht von der Pathologie eines Einzelnen aus, dessen unheilvolle, destruktive Eigenschaften wir in Beziehungen zu spüren bekommen, seien sie persönlicher oder allgemeiner Art. Um diese Blickweise zu erhärten, greifen viele zu geläufigen alltagspsychologischen 'Diagnosen'. Das erlaubt es ihnen, sich selber als schuldlos in einer solchen Beziehung verwickelt zu sehen. Die Autorin, Zürcher Psychoanalytikerin, verweigert sich in ihrer praxiserfahrenen Arbeit der Spaltung in narzisstisch und nicht narzisstisch, in schuldig und unschuldig, bös und gut. Sie fächert die Ovidsche Erzählung auf und fragt: Warum hat Narziss nur noch sich selbst als Gegenüber? Warum kommt ihm die Welt abhanden? Braucht diese Welt wiederum den Narzissten? Das Buch beleuchtet nicht nur die persönlichen narzisstischen Beziehungsmuster, sondern auch deren Ausdrucksformen in der Gesellschaft und im politisch-wirtschaftlichen Handeln The word "narcissism" is on everyone's lips. The common discourse assumes the pathology of an individual whose unwholesome, destructive qualities we feel in relationships, be they personal or general. To corroborate this view, many resort to common everyday psychological "diagnoses." This allows them to see themselves as blamelessly involved in such a relationship. In her practice-experienced work the author, a Zurich psychoanalyst, refutes the division into narcissistic and non-narcissistic, guilty and innocent, evil and good. She fans out the Ovidian narrative and asks: Why does Narcissus only have himself as a counterpart? Why is the world lost to him? Does this world in turn need the narcissist? The book illuminates not only the personal narcissistic relationship patterns, but also their forms of expression in society and in political-economic action
