    Die überkommenen Formen theologischer Lehre und Ausbildung in Deutschland stehen im Zuge der europäischen Ausbildungsharmonisierung vor folgenreichen Veränderungen mit möglicherweise weit reichenden institutionellen und rechtlichen Folgen für die theologischen Fakultäten und Fachbereiche. Sollen die gegenwärtigen Debatten nicht inhaltsfreie Studienreformspiele bleiben, ist es nötig, sich über Aufgaben und Ziele, Fragestellungen und Verfahren evangelischer Theologie grundsätzlich Gedanken zu machen. Die Studie versucht eine solche systematische Orientierung anhand der Frage, was evangelische Theologie - unabhängig von den spezifischen Orten, an denen sie gelehrt und praktiziert wird - eigentlich evangelisch und zur Theologie macht. Ingolf U. Dalferth versteht evangelische Theologie als Interpretationspraxis der christlichen Kommunikation des Evangeliums, und er beschreibt die zentralen Aufgaben theologischer Interpretation, die evangelische Theologie zu bearbeiten hat, wenn sie das sein will, als das sie sich bezeichnet: evangelische Theologie.

    With Faithful Translators Jaime Goodrich offers the first in-depth examination of women’s devotional translations and of religious translations in general within early modern England. Placing female translators such as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, alongside their male counterparts, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Philip Sidney, Goodrich argues that both male and female translators constructed authorial poses that allowed their works to serve four distinct cultural functions: creating privacy, spreading propaganda, providing counsel, and representing religious groups. Ultimately, Faithful Translators calls for a reconsideration of the apparent simplicity of "faithful" translations and aims to reconfigure perceptions of early modern authorship, translation, and women writers.

    Provides a new account of the emergence of Irish gothic fiction in mid-eighteenth century. This book provides a robustly theorised and thoroughly historicised account of the ‘beginnings’ of Irish gothic fiction, maps the theoretical terrain covered by other critics, and puts forward a new history of the emergence of the genre in Ireland. The main argument the book makes is that the Irish gothic should be read in the context of the split in Irish Anglican public opinion that opened in the 1750s, and seen as a fictional instrument of liberal Anglican opinion in a changing political landscape. By providing a fully historicized account of the beginnings of the genre in Ireland, the book also addresses the theoretical controversies that have bedevilled discussion of the Irish gothic in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The book gives ample space to the critical debate, and rigorously defends a reading of the Irish gothic as an Anglican, Patriot tradition. This reading demonstrates the connections between little-known Irish gothic fictions of the mid-eighteenth century (The Adventures of Miss Sophia Berkley and Longsword), and the Irish gothic tradition more generally, and also the gothic as a genre of global significance.

    Abstract: Dubhghlas de hÍde was part of the Protestant minority in Ireland during his youth. Despite this he decided to master Irish, a language typically associated with Irish Catholics of the lower classes. He was not brought up with Irish but went on to spend his life promoting the language - what led him to this? Through analysis of his diaries in the earlier part of his life an understanding can be gained of the reasons for this. De hÍde was born in 1860 and he began writing his diary in 1874, aged 14. The article will discuss this early period of his life which he spent in Frenchpark in County Roscommon - the pre-'Craoibhín' period you could call it! The title refers to his self-appointed pen-name 'An Craoibhín Aoibhinn' (The Delightful Little Branch) and contains a pun on the meaning of this name

La virulence du Traité des scandales de Calvin contre les "contes" de Rabelais ou l'invitation de l'Uranie de Du Bartas à "laiss[er] à part [les] fables surannées" témoignent, de fait, d'une vive méfiance à l'égard d'un usage "mensonger" de l'écriture, qui inciterait à s'éloigner de l'essentiel et à se disperser dans un labyrinthe d'images immorales. Ce volume collectif entend montrer ce que cette doxa peut avoir de réducteur, en considérant dans leur diversité les attitudes des réformés par rapport à la fable, le prestige de certaines fictions chez les grands Réformateurs, le rôle de la fiction dans la pédagogie et la prédication réformées, ou encore la place que la mythologie continue d'occuper chez les poètes protestants, malgré leur volonté de promouvoir une poésie de vérité."--Page 4 of cover

    Christina Harker untersucht in dieser Studie die vorherrschende Meinung, dass das Neue Testament anti-imperial sei, indem sie die Forschung zum Neuen Testament sowie die Erfahrungen der Galater innerhalb imperialer Diskurse, die die Auflösung der konventionellen Kolonialreiche im 20. Jahrhundert überdauerten, verortet. Dadurch, dass sie die grob vereinfachende Behandlung des Kaiserreichs in der Bibelforschung als post-imperial, also unwissentlich die Muster imperialer Ideologie wiederholend, problematisiert, schlägt sie eine neue Deutung des Briefes an die Galater vor. Christina Harker überarbeitet und differenziert die Darstellung der Galater selbst, statt der des Paulus, innerhalb dessen, was sich als eine sozial facettenreiche Welt erweist, die von komplexen Individuen mit heterogenen sozialen und kulturellen Identitäten bevölkert wird. Ihre Folgerungen zeigen, dass Neutestamentler, die die Bibel und Paulus als anti-imperial rehabilitieren, dieselben, imperialen Methoden der Deutung fortschreiben, die sie eigentlich ablehnen. In this work, Christina Harker deconstructs the prevailing treatment of the New Testament as anti-imperial by contextualizing both New Testament scholarship and the Galatian experience within imperialist discourses that survived the dissolution of conventional empires in the twentieth century. She critiques simplistic treatments of empire as post-imperial (that is, replicating patterns of imperialist ideology, albeit unwittingly). To solve the problem, a new interpretation of Galatians is proposed that reworks and complicates the portrait of the Galatians themselves, rather than Paul, within what then emerges as a diverse social world peopled by complex individuals with heterogeneous social and cultural identities. The author is thus able to show how New Testament scholars who rehabilitate the Bible and Paul as anti-empire perpetuate the same imperialist modes of interpretation they seek to repudiate.

    Die überkommenen Formen theologischer Lehre und Ausbildung in Deutschland stehen im Zuge der europäischen Ausbildungsharmonisierung vor folgenreichen Veränderungen mit möglicherweise weit reichenden institutionellen und rechtlichen Folgen für die theologischen Fakultäten und Fachbereiche. Sollen die gegenwärtigen Debatten nicht inhaltsfreie Studienreformspiele bleiben, ist es nötig, sich über Aufgaben und Ziele, Fragestellungen und Verfahren evangelischer Theologie grundsätzlich Gedanken zu machen. Die Studie versucht eine solche systematische Orientierung anhand der Frage, was evangelische Theologie - unabhängig von den spezifischen Orten, an denen sie gelehrt und praktiziert wird - eigentlich evangelisch und zur Theologie macht. Ingolf U. Dalferth versteht evangelische Theologie als Interpretationspraxis der christlichen Kommunikation des Evangeliums, und er beschreibt die zentralen Aufgaben theologischer Interpretation, die evangelische Theologie zu bearbeiten hat, wenn sie das sein will, als das sie sich bezeichnet: evangelische Theologie.

In Apocalyptic Geographies, Jerome Tharaud explores how white Protestant evangelicals used print and visual media to present the antebellum landscape as a "sacred space" of spiritual pilgrimage, and how devotional literature influenced secular society in important and surprising ways.Reading across genres and media—including religious tracts and landscape paintings, domestic fiction and missionary memoirs, slave narratives and moving panoramas—Apocalyptic Geographies illuminates intersections of popular culture, the physical spaces of an expanding and urbanizing nation, and the spiritual narratives that ordinary Americans used to orient their lives.     Religion Around Emily Dickinson begins with a seeming paradox posed by Dickinson's posthumously published works: while her poems and letters contain many explicitly religious themes and concepts, throughout her life she resisted joining her local church and rarely attended services. Prompted by this paradox, W. Clark Gilpin proposes, first, that understanding the religious aspect of the surrounding culture enhances our appreciation of Emily Dickinson's poetry and, second, that her poetry casts light on features of religion in nineteenth-century America that might otherwise escape our attention. Religion, especially Protestant Christianity, was "around" Emily Dickinson not only in explicitly religious practices, literature, architecture, and ideas but also as an embedded influence on normative patterns of social organization in the era, including gender roles, education, and ideals of personal intimacy and fulfillment. Through her poetry, Dickinson imaginatively reshaped this richly textured religious inheritance to create her own personal perspective on what it might mean to be religious in the nineteenth century. The artistry of her poetry and the profundity of her thought have meant that this personal perspective proved to be far more than "merely" personal. Instead, Dickinson's creative engagement with the religion around her has stimulated and challenged successive generations of readers in the United States and around the world

Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die Verbindungslinien zwischen Religion, Ästhetik und individueller Biographie im Blick auf die Bedeutung der ‚inneren Welt‘ gelebter Frömmigkeit in Geschichte und Gegenwart. L. de Wette was published, which is still considered one of the most important theological novels of its time. On the occasion of the ne edition of de Wettes didactic “Bildungsroman”, the accompanying scholarly volume open up theological, philosophical and literary approaches to the background of its epoch and interpretation. The focus of the interdisciplinary contributions lies on the interdependencies between religion, aesthetics and individual biography in their meaning for the 'inner world' of religious life and piety in the past and present.
