Writings on Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Italy, France and Argentina offer regional perspectives which, in turn, provide the reader with a deepened global view of the main features of the multiple and complex relations between postcoloniality and populism.     Long description: Phänomene des Mehrdeutigen sind für die Kunst bestimmend, faszinierend und anspruchsvoll. Herausfordernd sind zugleich die vieldeutigen Strukturen in global entgrenzter Kultur, sozialen Ordnungen und Identitätsvorstellungen. Demgegenüber sind weltweit reaktionäre und antidemokratische Schließungsbewegungen zu beobachten, die dieser Vagheit mit binären Vorstellungen von scheinbar klarer Eindeutigkeit begegnen. Ambiguität auszuhalten und zu gestalten ist darum umso mehr künstlerische wie politische Bildungsaufgabe! Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes aus Kunst, Pädagogik, Politik- und Kulturwissenschaft diskutieren, inwiefern Ambiguitäten in Kunst und Politik strukturähnlich sind und eine pädagogische Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst zugleich demokratische Haltungen bilden kann Biographical note: Ansgar Schnurr (Prof. Dr. phil.), geb. 1977, forscht und lehrt als Professor für Kunstpädagogik an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich transkultureller Kunstpädagogik, Studien zur ästhetischen Dimension von Diversität und Ungleichheit sowie Schnittstellen und Transferwirkungen zur politischen Bildung. Sabine Dengel (Dr. phil.), geb. 1967, ist wissenschaftliche Referentin für politische und kulturelle Bildung bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung und Leiterin der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur«. Sie hat Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Philosophie an der Universität des Saarlandes studiert und über politische Erziehung im Deutschen Kaiserreich, dem NS-Staat und der DDR promoviert. Ihre inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte liegen in der modernen politischen Theorie, der Theorie politischer und kultureller Bildung, der (historischen) Bildungsforschung sowie der Demokratietheorie. Julia Hagenberg, geb. 1967, Kunsthistorikerin und Pädagogin, leitet die Abteilung Bildung in der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Die Schwerpunkte ihrer Arbeit und Lehrtätigkeit liegen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunstvermittlung und kuratorischer Praxis sowie im Bereich partizipativer Bildungskonzepte und der gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension von Museumsarbeit. Linda Kelch, geb. 1988, hat Politikwissenschaft und Philosophie studiert und ist wissenschaftliche Referentin bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb) und arbeitet dort in der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur« zur Schnittstelle von kultureller und politischer Bildung sowie zu Phänomenen der Kulturalisierung und Konzepten der transkulturellen Bildung

Doch was genau meint der schillernde Begriff »Systemvertrauen« und welche Konsequenzen hat ein Mangel desselben? Malte G. Schmidt folgt diesen Fragen aus einer gesellschaftstheoretischen Perspektive. Er zeigt die sozialintegrative Bedeutung des Journalismus auf und prüft, inwieweit dieser seine Rolle als Vertrauensvermittler im neoliberalen Kapitalismus erfüllen kann. The common denominator of the studies is the focus on the discursive and rhetorical characteristics of recently emerged movements of populism in both continents.     The internet has fundamentally transformed society in the past 25 years, yet existing theories of mass or interpersonal communication do not work well in understanding a digital world. Nor has this understanding been helped by disciplinary specialization and a continual focus on the latest innovations. Ralph Schroeder takes a longer-term view, synthesizing perspectives and findings from various social science disciplines in four countries: the United States, Sweden, India and China. His comparison highlights, among other observations, that smartphones are in many respects more important than PC-based internet uses. Social Theory after the Internet focuses on everyday uses and effects of the internet, including information seeking and big data, and explains how the internet has gone beyond traditional media in, for example, enabling Donald Trump and Narendra Modi to come to power. Schroeder puts forward a sophisticated theory of the role of the internet, and how both technological and social forces shape its significance.     Using the socio-political discourse of Kwame Nkrumah, a pioneering Pan-Africanist and Ghana's independence leader, Nartey investigates the notion of political myth-making in a context underexplored in the literature. He examines Nkrumah's construction of a myth described in the book as the Unite or Perish myth (i.e., the idea of a 'United States of Africa' being a prerequisite for the survival of Africa in the post-independence period), exploring the rhetorical resources he deployed, categorizing and analyzing key tropes and metaphors, and setting out the myth's basic components. This book focuses on three areas: an investigation of political myth-making as a social and discursive practice in order to identify particular semiotic practices and linguistic patterns deployed in the construction of mythic discourse; the unpacking of the discursive manifestation, representation, features, and functions of political mythic themes; and finally to propose and implement an integrated discourse analytical framework to account for the complexities of mythic discourse and political narratives in general. It analyzes how Nkrumah deployed his discourse to concurrently construct heroes and villains, protagonists and antagonists, as part of an ideological mechanism aimed at galvanizing support for and instigating action on the part of the masses towards his lifelong African dream.Nartey's book steps out from the conventional domain of critical discourse studies to focus on myth as a form of populist performance. It will be of interest to postgraduate students and academics in (critical) discourse studies, rhetorical discourse analysis, African and Diaspora studies, and African history, as well as non-academics such as journalists, political commentators, and people who consider themselves to be Nkrumaists and Pan-Africanists

    The large increase in economic inequality and the dismantling of the welfare state in Western democracies has been connected to the rise of populist parties. If populist voting is explained by fear and labor market insecurity and if people care more about procedural fairness than inequality of economic outcomes, national income inequality should be less important than other factors in explaining vote shares of populist parties. Using election results from 33 European countries over the 1980-2018 period, two different classifications of populist parties and three different measures of government/welfare state size, we find no relationship between country-level economic inequality, as measured by the disposable income Gini, and either right-wing or leftwing populism. An alternative hypothesis that right-wing populism is dampened by labor market flexibility and social spending is developed and shown to have empirical support.

    "Donald Trump's campaign for the presidency has been called "the single strangest development in American history" (Michael Gerson), and that is in large part because of Trump's use of rhetoric in appealing to the white working class. He won the presidency largely because of his rhetoric, and despite committing gaffe after gaffe, violating every norm identified by pundits and scholars alike about how a presidential candidate should talk, and presenting a message that was antithetical to the rhetorical vision of the greatest conservative hero of the last forty years, Ronald Reagan. Robert C. Rowland argues that Trump's rhetoric is defined by the themes of nationalist populism and by a rhetorical persona casting himself as first an outsider hero who could achieve near magical results and later, after assuming the presidency, as a more radical version of that persona, moving toward the role of heroic strongman. Rowland shows that, while these three elements are found in all of Trump's campaign and presidential rhetoric, there has been development over time toward a more extreme variant of all of these themes.     What characterizes regions where right-wing populist parties are relatively successful? A prominent hypothesis proposed in recent literature claims that places that are "left behind" or "do not matter" are a breeding ground for the rise of populism. We re-examine this hypothesis by analyzing the rise of populism in Germany. Our results suggest that the high vote shares of populist parties are not only associated with low regional levels of welfare as such, but also with the long-term decline of a region's relative welfare. Hence, it is not the regions that do "not matter" that are most prone to the rise of populism, but the regions that once mattered, but are in long-term decline. Moreover, we find that regional knowledge represents an important channel through which the historical decline in wealth explains voting behavior in German regions.
