This edition argues that Petrarch's text has been neglected by modern scholarship in favour of the translations of the Canzoniere, while it can be shown that the Triumphi enjoyed a much earlier and much more durable fame in Europe as well as in the British Isles, being translated at least twice in its entirety, with individual books and smaller sections being translated or adapted a number of times. Critical editions of the translations are accompanied by analysis of the reception of Petrarch's work in the British Isles, looking at the circulation of the book in the original Italian and in the various French translations, as well as at the use that is made of the Triumphi motifs not only in literature, but in paintings, music, etc

The volume presents a wide-ranging investigation of the ways in which Petrarch's legacy informed the relationship between visual and literary portraits in sixteenth-century Italy. Petrarch's vast literary production influenced the intellectual framework in which new models of representation and self-representation developed during the Renaissance. His two sonnets on Laura's portrait by Simone Martini and his ambivalent fascination with the illusionary power of portraiture in his Latin texts - such as the "Secretum", the "Familiares" and "De remediis utriusque fortune" - constituted the theoretical reference for artists and writers alike. In a century dominated by the rhetorical comparison between art and literature ("ut pictura poësis") and by the "paragone" debate, the interplay between Petrarch's oeuvre, Petrarchism and portraiture shaped the discourse on the relationship between the sitters' physical image and their inner life. The volume brings together diverse interdisciplinary contributions that explore the subject through a rich body of literary and visual sources

"Petrarch's Canzoniere had a central role in the Italian Early Modern culture, especially - but not only - in the sixteenth century, as is shown by its remarkable diffusion in print and manuscript copies, and its status as supreme poetic and linguistic model. As a result, many commentaries and other types of texts aiming at explaining and evaluating Petrarch's poems date from that period. The essays in this volume study the diversity of ways in which the Canzoniere was read, judged and interpreted in Italy across a broad chronological span, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The volume also draws attention to some neglected but stimulating works that deserve scholarly attention"--
