Dramatizing Blindness: Disability Studies as Critical Creative Narrative engages with the cultural meanings and movements of blindness. This book addresses how blindness is lived in particular contexts—in offices of ophthalmology and psychiatry, in classrooms of higher education, in accessibility service offices, on the street and at home. Taking the form of a play written in five acts, the narrative dramatizes how the main character’s blindness is conceived of in the world and in the self. Each act includes an analysis where blind studies is explored in relation to disability studies. This work reveals the performative enactment of blindness that is lived in the public as well as in the private corners of the self, demonstrating how blindness is a form of perception. Devon Healey’s work orients to blindness as a necessary and creative feature of the sensorium and shows how blindness is a form of perception.

Restoring the Human Context to Literary and Performance Studies argues that much of contemporary literary theory is still predicated, at least implicitly, on outdated linguistic and psychological models such as post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, and behaviorism, which significantly contradict current dominant scientific views. By contrast, this monograph promotes an alternative paradigm for literary studies, namely Contextualism, and in so doing highlights the similarities and differences among the sometimes-conflicting contemporary cognitive approaches to literature and performance, arguing not in favor of one over the other but for Contextualism as their common ground. Howard Mancing, who has recently made the transition to Professor Emeritus of Spanish at Purdue University, USA, is a renowned expert on Cervantes and Early Modern Spanish Literature, as well as a pioneer in Cognitive Literary Studies. He has published two monographs: The Chivalric World of Don Quixote: Style, Structure, and Narrative (1982) and Miguel de Cervantes’ ‘Don Quixote’: A Reference Guide (2006), and coedited three volumes of essay collections. In addition, he authored the two-volume Cervantes Encyclopedia in 2004. Howard has also written numerous journal articles and book chapters on Cognitive Studies topics such as embodied cognition, narrative and affect and Theory of Mind representations in literature. Jennifer Marston William is a Professor of German with specializations in twentieth and twenty-first century literature and film. She is currently serving as the Head of the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue University, USA. Jennifer’s second monograph, Cognitive Approaches to German Historical Film: Seeing is Not Believing, was published with Palgrave in 2017, and she has published scholarly articles and book chapters on conceptual metaphor and on literary analyses from the perspective of Theory of Mind. She is also a co-founder, with Howard Mancing, of the Center for Cognitive Literary Studies at Purdue, which has existed since 2008 and was recently renamed the Center for Neurohumanities.

Matthew Steggle is Professor of English at the University of Bristol, UK. His research interests include early modern literature and drama, with a particular focus on "historicized performance studies", and "acoustic approaches" to early modern drama. His publications include four monographs on early modern drama; editions of plays by Shakespeare, Jonson, and Brome; and dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters. This is the first book to view Shakespeare’s plays from the prospect of the premodern death arts, not only the ars moriendi tradition but also the plurality of cultural expressions of memento mori, funeral rituals, commemorative activities, and rhetorical techniques and strategies fundamental to the performance of the work of dying, death, and the dead. The volume is divided into two sections: first, critically nuanced examinations of Shakespeare’s corpus and then, second, of Hamlet exclusively as the ultimate proving ground of the death arts in practice. This book revitalizes discussion around key and enduring themes of mortality by reframing Shakespeare’s plays within a newly conceptualized historical category that posits a cultural divide—at once epistemological and phenomenological—between premodernity and the Enlightenment. William E. Engel is the Nick B. Williams Professor of Literature at The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee, USA. He has published eight books on literary history and applied emblematics, including two critical anthologies coauthored with Rory Loughnane and Grant Williams, The Death Arts in Renaissance England (2022) and The Memory Arts in Renaissance England (2016); and has coedited several collections of essays including Memory and Mortality in Renaissance England (2022) and Memory and Forgetting in the Early Modern Era (2018). Grant Williams is an Associate Professor of English Literature at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Canada. With William E. Engel and Rory Loughnane, he has co-authored The Death Arts in Renaissance England (2022) and, with Donald Beecher, edited Henry Chettle’s Kind-Heart’s Dream and Piers Plainness: Two Pamphlets from the Elizabethan Book Trade (2021). He has also co-authored The Memory Arts in Renaissance England (2016) with Engel and Loughnane and co-edited three collections: Taking Exception to the Law (2015), Ars reminiscendi (2009), and Lethe’s Legacies (2004).

Dramatizing Blindness: Disability Studies as Critical Creative Narrative engages with the cultural meanings and movements of blindness. This book addresses how blindness is lived in particular contexts—in offices of ophthalmology and psychiatry, in classrooms of higher education, in accessibility service offices, on the street and at home. Taking the form of a play written in five acts, the narrative dramatizes how the main character’s blindness is conceived of in the world and in the self. Each act includes an analysis where blind studies is explored in relation to disability studies. This work reveals the performative enactment of blindness that is lived in the public as well as in the private corners of the self, demonstrating how blindness is a form of perception. Devon Healey’s work orients to blindness as a necessary and creative feature of the sensorium and shows how blindness is a form of perception

These chapters expand our understanding of both the literature studied as well as Bowie’s music, exploring the boundaries of reason and imagination, and of identity, gender, and genre. This collection uses the conceptual apparata and historical insights provided by the study of Romanticism to provide insight into identity formation, drawing from Romantic theories of self to understand Bowie’s oeuvre and periods of his career. The chapters discuss key themes in Bowie’s work and analyze what Bowie has to teach us about Romantic art and literature as well.

    Ein Sinn, der verborgen oder enthüllt werden kann, ist eine der zentralen Denkfiguren der Neuzeit. Das betrifft auch die Frage, was Musik eigentlich sei. Laurenz Lütteken geht dieser Frage nach und untersucht, ob und auf welche Weise komponierte Musik sich selbst zum Gegenstand macht und so möglicherweise etwas von ihrem Kern preisgibt. Die optischen Metaphern von Verhüllung und Enthüllung erweisen sich dabei als ebenso hilfreich wie anschaulich. In einer Reihe von Beispielen geht es nicht nur um Opern von Mozart bis Strauss, sondern auch um Monteverdis Vokalmusik, Haydns „Schöpfung“, die Sinfonien Bruckners oder Ligetis Etüden.

This book explores the comedy and legacy of women working as performers on the music-hall stage from 1880–1920, and examines the significance of their previously overlooked contributions to British comic traditions. Focusing on the under-researched female ‘serio-comic’, the study includes six micro-histories detailing the acts of Ada Lundberg, Bessie Bellwood, Maidie Scott, Vesta Victoria, Marie Lloyd and Nellie Wallace. Uniquely for women in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, these pioneering performers had public voices. The extent to which their comedy challenged Victorian and Edwardian perceptions of women is revealed through explorations of how they connected with popular audiences while also avoiding censorship. Their use of techniques such as comic irony and stereotyping, self-deprecation, and comic innuendo are considered alongside the work of contemporary stand-up comedians and performance artists including Bridget Christie, Bryony Kimmings, Sara Pascoe, Shazia Mirza and Sarah Silverman.

The volume also includes essays on disabled actors whose performances are changing the meanings of disability in Shakespeare for present-day audiences. By combining these two areas of scholarship, this text makes a unique intervention in early modern studies and disability studies alike. Ultimately, the volume generates a conversation that locates and theorizes the staging of particular disabilities within their historical and literary contexts while considering continuity and change in the performance of disability between the early modern period and our own. .

The work in media cultural history is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, in connection with affects and (self-)cognitions on and off screen. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. In a hitherto unattempted consideration of Caribbean theatre and performance, this study of gendered identities chronicles the postcolonial hybrid experience – and how it varies in the context of questions of sex, performance and social designation. In the process, it examines the diverse performances of the anglophone Caribbean. The work includes works by Caribbean anglophone playwrights like Derek Walcott, Mustapha Matura, Michael Gikes, Dennis Scott, Trevor Rhone, Earl Lovelace and Errol John with more recent works of Pat Cumper, Rawle Gibbons and Tony Hall. The study would also engage with Carnival, calypso and chutney music, while commenting on its evolving influences over the hybrid imagination. Each section covers the dominant socio-political thematics associated with the tradition and its effect on it, followed by an analysis of contemporaneously significant literary and cultural works – plays, carnival narrative and calypso and chutney lyrics as well as the experiences of performers. From Lovelace’s fictional Jestina to the real-life Drupatee, the book critically explores the marginalization of female performances while forming a hybrid identity. Shrabani Basu is an Assistant Professor of English at Deshabandhu Mahavidyalaya, Chittaranjan, India. She holds PhD, MPhil and MA degrees from The English and Foreign Languages (EFL) University, Hyderabad. Her doctoral research focused on Caribbean performance studies. In recent years, she has shifted her focus to experiences of horror in the postcolonial realm. She predominantly publishes on postcolonial feminism.

As early modernists with an interest in the literary culture of Shakespeare’s time, we work in a field that contains many significant losses: of texts, of contextual information, of other forms of cultural activity. No account of early modern literary culture is complete without acknowledgment of these lacunae, and although lost drama has become a topic of increasing interest in Shakespeare studies, it is important to recognize that loss is not restricted to play-texts alone. Loss and the Literary Culture of Shakespeare’s Time broadens the scope of the scholarly conversation about loss beyond drama and beyond London. It aims to develop further models and techniques for thinking about lost plays, but also of other kinds of lost early modern works, and even lost persons associated with literary and theatrical circles. Chapters examine textual corruption, oral preservation, quantitative analysis, translation, and experiments in “verbatim theater”, plus much more. .

Die medienkulturgeschichtliche Arbeit ist eine deutsche Kino- und Filmgeschichte von den 1890er Jahren bis 1945 mit Fokus auf queere Männlichkeit. Mit medienwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen zeigt die Studie, wie sich das ‚neue Medium’ Film durch performative Wiederaufführungen spektakulärer Elemente aus den Unterhaltungs- und Wissenskulturen des 19. Jahrhunderts konstituiert. Darin werden Körper, Begehren und Identitäten durch Differenzbildungen ständig remodelliert. Männliche Queerness bedeutet hier folglich nicht Repräsentation männlicher Homosexualität. Vielmehr ist sie dynamisches Ergebnis komplexer medialer Prozesse, in Verknüpfung mit Affekten und (Selbst-)Erkenntnissen auf und vor der Leinwand. .

Samuel Beckett and Catastrophe is a groundbreaking collection of original essays that explore the relation between Samuel Beckett and catastrophe in terms of war, the Holocaust, nuclear disasters and ecological crisis. Responding to the post-catastrophic situations in the twentieth century, Beckett created characters who often seem to have been through an unknown catastrophe. Although the importance of catastrophe in Beckett has been noted sporadically, there has been no substantial attempt to discuss his aesthetics and work in relation to it. This collection will therefore serve as the first sustained study to explore the theme of catastrophe in Beckett and will be a highly significant contribution to Beckett studies. Michiko Tsushima is Professor at University of Tsukuba, Japan. She has published articles and books on Beckett and Arendt. Her publications include The Space of Vacillation: The Experience of Language in Beckett, Blanchot, and Heidegger (2003). With Mariko Hori Tanaka and Yoshiki Tajiri, she co-edited Samuel Beckett and Pain (2012) and Samuel Beckett and trauma (2018). Yoshiki Tajiri is Professor at the University of Tokyo. He has published widely on Samuel Beckett, J. M. Coetzee, Kazuo Ishiguro and other authors. His publications include Samuel Beckett and the Prosthetic Body (Palgrave, 2007). Mariko Hori Tanaka is Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan. She co-edited four collections of essays on Beckett in English and authored two books on Beckett in Japanese including Revised Versions of Waiting for Godot: Beckett as Director (2017). .

This collection uses the conceptual apparata and historical insights provided by the study of Romanticism to provide insight into identity formation, drawing from Romantic theories of self to understand Bowie’s oeuvre and periods of his career.     "Was ist der Name dieses Wesens, es erscheint am Morgen auf vier, am Mittag auf zwei und am Abend auf drei Beinen." (Das Rätsel der Sphinx) Gehen ist eng mit der Idee des Menschen verknüpft. In den 1960er-Jahren entdeckten die performativen Künste diesen Prototyp menschlicher Fortbewegung für sich. Ralph Fischer zeichnet nach, wie Protagonisten aus den Bereichen Performance und Conceptual Art (Bruce Nauman, Richard Long, Vito Acconci), aber auch Theater- und Tanzschaffende (Samuel Beckett, Steve Paxton, Trisha Brown), mit Gangarten und Schrittmustern zu experimentieren begannen und damit die Grundlage legten für die produktive Auseinandersetzung mit jener universellen Bewegungstechnik in der Kunst- und Theaterlandschaft der Gegenwart. Die (Wieder-)Entdeckung des Gehens, so ein Ergebnis der Studie, ist weit mehr als nur eine Besinnung auf das motorische Grundvokabular performativer Kunst, sie ist das symbolische Zentrum einer radikalen Revision des traditionellen künstlerischen Formenvokabulars und zugleich ein Versuch der Neuverortung des Subjekts in einer veränderten soziokulturellen Wirklichkeit.
