In this paper we investigate the path to the green transition in Europe. In so doing, we implement an empirical model of dynamic panel data on a sample of sixteen Western European countries over the period 1980 to 2019. The model is consistent with various features of neo-classical growth theory incorporating energy use. Our focus is on the short-run determinants of carbon emissions within that set of countries. We provide evidence that the relationship between economic activity and CO2 emissions is strong in economies where economic booms depend on energy-intensive sectors. Also, the mitigating role of renewable energy technologies is key when energy intensity rebounds. These circumstances may constitute a challenge for the climate transition goals targeted in the EU’s Recovery Plan, whose main objective at this very moment is to mitigate the economic and social impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

We examine the effect of testing for Coronavirus on deaths in eight countries over the month of March 2020 by estimating a fixed-effect regression model using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). On average, the data reject the hypothesis that "testing" for the virus does not affect death. By country, however, we reject the hypothesis in two countries at the 5 percent level, in three countries at the 10 percent level, and could not reject it in three other countries. On average, testing for the virus is an important element of the health policy.

We study the impact of human capital and the level of education on the pollution-income relationship controlling for income inequality in 17 OECD countries. By applying an innovative approach to country grouping, based on the temporal evolution of income inequality and clustering techniques to feature the annual value of the Gini Index on disposable income from 1987 to 2015, we have estimated panel data models by distinguishing between low and high levels of income inequality country clusters. Robustness checks and endogeneity tests are further performed considering as the discriminant factor the income inequality affecting the countries in the sample. The findings highlight the role of the educational level and years of schooling in validating the EKC hypothesis. We recommend that this variable should not be neglected in future EKC studies. Therefore, any EKC theory should also acknowledge a new EKC model specification that we named the Educational EKC.

The fixed effects (FE) panel model is one of the main econometric tools in empirical economic research. A major practical limitation is that the parameters on time-constant covariates are not identifiable. This paper presents a new approach to grouping FE in the linear panel model to reduce their dimensionality and ensure identifiability. By using unsupervised nonparametric density based clustering, cluster patterns including their location and number are not restricted. The approach works with large data structures (units and groups) and only clusters units that are sufficiently similar, while leaving others as unclustered atoms. Asymptotic theory and rates of convergence are presented. With the help of simulations and an application to economic data it is shown that the suggested method performs well and gives more insightful and efficient results than conventional panel models.

We estimate a supply and demand model of private college education services in Mexico for the 2005-2019 period, in order to identify the factors that influenced the dynamics of their equilibrium prices. The model is estimated with two- and three-stage least squares using panel data at the state level. The estimates suggest that while the contribution of demand variables to the inflation of such prices has been positive and fairly stable, that of supply variables, even though it has been more fluctuating, it has also been larger than the contribution of the former throughout the entire period. The estimated model is used, in turn, to identify the supply and demand variables that most contributed to the recent acceleration (2016-2018) and subsequent deceleration (2018-2019) of the observed inflation in private college education prices.

The long-recognized spurious regressions problem can lead to mistaken inference in panel instrumental variables (IV) estimation. Spurious correlations arising from correlated cycles in finite time horizons can make irrelevant instruments appear strong with signable consequences for estimated IV coefficients, or interfere with valid of inference of causal effects from IV coefficients estimated using relevant instruments. The inclusion of time fixed effects in interacted specifications does not always resolve these problems. We demonstrate these concerns by revisiting recent studies of the causal origins of conflict. We offer diagnostic and corrective recommendations for avoiding the pitfalls arising from time series exhibiting persistence.

In this paper, I use an 18-year long panel data set of maize yields and high resolution weather data at the municipality level in Mexico to shed light on the differentiated effects that climate change may have in rainfed and irrigated agriculture. I find that rainfed maize is sensitive to both temperature and precipitation. This sensitivity is weakened in irrigated maize suggesting that the use of irrigation reduces not only the dependency of production on direct precipitation but also the damaging effects of warmer temperatures. When the panel estimates are applied to climate change projections for 2100 I conclude that, in the absence of adaptation, rainfed maize yields could decrease by 3.3-4.0% on average depending on the climate model and scenario with rising temperatures accounting for about 80% of the loss and a declining precipitation accounting for the remaining 20%. Areas with high levels of rural poverty could be among the most affected with some municipalities losing up to 13.5% of maize yields.

We study identification in a binary choice panel data model with a single predetermined binary covariate (i.e., a covariate sequentially exogenous conditional on lagged outcomes and covariates). The choice model is indexed by a scalar parameter θ, whereas the distribution of unit-specific heterogeneity, as well as the feedback process that maps lagged outcomes into future covariate realizations, are left unrestricted. We provide a simple condition under which θ is never point-identified, no matter the number of time periods available. This condition is satisfied in most models, including the logit one. We also characterize the identified set of θ and show how to compute it using linear programming techniques. While θ is not generally point-identified, its identified set is informative in the examples we analyze numerically, suggesting that meaningful learning about θ is possible even in short panels with feedback.
